The answer to your question regarding your requirement to hold a US entry visa to enter the states definately not. Any Australian passport holder is not required to apply for a US visa.
I was informed of this les than two weeks ago by the US embassy in Jakarta.

Actually he is right (for once) Australia is party to the US visa waiver scheme and all things being equal an AUS passport holder can visit the US for 3 months or less on a waiver.
However I think that you may have to fly from Australia or another participating country.
Warning, do not overstay or you will be barred permanently and remember you cannot get an extension on a waiver.
Recently it is has become neccessary to register your visit on-line prior to departure or they won't let you in!

Bah it is not right. If you have committed a criminal act in Oz and been found guilty or not guilty by the court or gaoled for DUA you must apply for a visa. When you land in the USA they run your name through the computer. It will show them if you are a clean skin or not. If you aren't the chances of them sending you back to Oz is 99.99999999999999999%
