Mum steals own baby from hospital - DoCS Reply to this message
A 27-year-old NSW woman has been charged after allegedly taking her new-born baby from a hospital in the state's central west where it had been placed into care.

The woman is accused of removing her 11-day-old girl from the paediatric ward at Dubbo Base Hospital about 3.30pm on Friday, police say.

Hospital staff noticed the child was missing about an hour later and alerted police, who then reviewed CCTV footage.

The woman and baby were found at a house in Orange, and the baby was taken to Orange Base Hospital for further medical observation, police said in a statement.

The woman was charged with take/detain child with intent to remove from parental control and breach of bail.

She was refused bail and is expected to appear in Orange Local Court on Saturday.

I don't understand how you can 'steal' your own baby and be charged especially when the family court are allowed to get away with doing that to fathers..

even if the mother had a drug dependency or psychiatric illness... at least she should have been allowed strict supervision to see her own baby....

this isn't about her seeing her baby, it's about her stealing it from the hospital.

The "taking of babies from mothers at birth" occurs far more often than realize, often with agreement from mothers, families, courts, with reason baby needs be cared for.

Some mothers around time of birth are not well enough, capable of caring for the new born.

Those pushing the story need to set out clearly the reason why the baby is kept in the hospital.

Certainly, before such action occurs the circumstances need to be considered fully and properly, NOT just apply some one size fits all general rule to all.

NEED each cases considered regardless of each cases particular circumstances.

Relation due soon, her partner worried when was reported to docs. Hospital doing this as in this pregnancy mother had to stop her medication which may harm child. Known side-effect from stopping her medication was short term mental problems, weird attituted and behavior, which sure enough she has shown.

After birth her medication will take a month or so to restart and stabilize so works properly.

So issue arose who caring for new child.

The hospital is required to report to docs such issues, and docs checks the arrangements.

So far not a problem...

Her partner will not be able to operate his small own business for a month or so whilst caring for children, so they putting him onto a centrelink payment so can care for the mother and child until she well enough for him to resume work.

Many other cases, where mothers for addiction or other reasons concerns felt they may NOT be able to provide full and proper care for new born children so all are reported to docs.

It is docs job to sort them out....

actually, it's not that common. most likely occurs when the parents have previous children in state care, and they haven't addressed the initial concerns

We don't know full background story to this case.

If she was a drug/alcohol abuser, or had previous dealings with DOCS from her kids (if she had any).
Would she be eligible for at least a supervised visit? Of course depending on any previous circumstances.

Whether or not she is a substance abuser, she's not going to be much better off now, suffering PND, and if no detox or rehab opportunities, will probably end up pregnant again :(

My concern is for the baby, hopefully he will go to a good family.

my concern is with both of them. babies need to be with their families, if it is at all possible and safe to the child.

i hope the baby and his family are able to be safety reunified :)

Possibly, however there are no shortage of victims of vicious DOCS workers. I can't believe any supposedly decent staff could be unaware of the bad ones. When its all said & done, creatures like the legendary frothing one are common knowledge these days.

and i never ever said that their aren't 'bad' ones... there are examples of that in every field.

there are bad doctors, bad counselors, bad teachers, bad cops... all professions that are meant to be about helping people.

and when i see bad practice in my field, i speak up about it.

see, you would be more credible if you spoke about bad practice, than about bum size.

One has to wonder about the state of mind of any individual with 80% of their weight confined to their nether regions
