Berlusconi says crucifix ruling denies Europe's roots
Stephen Brown, Reuters November 5, 2009, 4:05 am
ROME (Reuters) - Italy's Silvio Berlusconi said on Wednesday a European Court of Human Rights ruling that called for crucifixes to be removed from Italian classrooms was a nonsensical attempt to deny Europe's Christian roots.
The Roman Catholic country has reacted with outrage to Tuesday's ruling from Strasbourg that the ubiquitous crucifixes on walls in Italian schools could disturb children who were not Christian.
The conservative prime minister, who draws much of his support from the Roman Catholic majority, told a television show the ruling was an attempt to "deny Europe's Christian roots. This is not acceptable for us Italians."
"This is one of those decisions that often make us doubt Europe's good sense," said the prime minister, confirming that Italy intended to appeal against the ruling once his cabinet has studied it at its weekly meeting on Friday.
The Vatican expressed "shock and sadness" at the court ruling, which was condemned across the ideological divide in a rare moment of unity among Italian politicians. Only some on the far left and atheist groups backed the ruling.
Mayors all over the country vowed to defy the ruling and there were angry reactions from Catholic strongholds abroad such as Poland. Thousands of people protested on social networking sites on the Internet.
Italy has been in the throes of debate on how to deal with a growing population of immigrants, mostly Muslims, and the ruling could become another battle cry for the government's policy drive to crack down on new arrivals.

I condensed the news item....omitting this sentence.
...............
Mara Bizzotto, a European parliamentarian for Berlusconi's anti-immigrant coalition partner, the Northern League, asked why the European court had taken action against the crucifix but did not ban Muslim symbols such as "veils, burqas and niqabs."
......................
Interesting that in Ireland, wearing of the Veil has been banned in schools. ......while in Sweden it is encouraged.
While a Swedish girl was sent home from school for wearing a Christian Cross.....not a Crucifix, which includes the image of Jesus.
This religious symbolism is deemed, in Sweden, an attempt to
"offend ethnic sensibilities". |

If the school has a religious bent then they should be free to whack up their religious thingies wherever they want.
If it is a secular school, it has no place putting up religious icons as furnishings.
Simple isn't it? |

Agreed. It's a rather macabre image. Dude nailed to a cross and all dead and stabbed and messed up by a crown of thorns and stuff. |

<<<and gran, if I am a far left extremist ... that makes you a far right, fascist, islamic hating nazi.

Wrong.
<<far right>>
They would advocate "blowing up" people trafficker's SIEV's.
I would advocate their settlement in stable third world countries, subsidised by us to compensate for the social consequences, and to be returned to their native land when stability is restored.
<<fascist>>
Certainly not.
This word is constantly abused by the leftists....and really is a close descriptor of Communism.
Therefore:
Fascism requires a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism.
A perfect description of Communism.
<<islamic hating>>
No.
I judge each individual on face value.
That's why I had very pleasant evening meal with Tatar Muslim family in Vilnius last year.
I am concerned about Islamic expansionism in the West....and the obvious implications of this.
<<nazi>>
That pathetic implication deserves no comment.
I actually support a major green platform....the concern for the global commitment to an economy based on unsustainable perpetual growth....and, to this end, population control. |

While not even microscopically religious myself, it is obviously fair to say that Australia as we know it was SUCCESSFULLY founded and built on Christian values. This country has been far more STABLE, and HUMANITARIAN than ALL of the countries of origin of those who seek to suppress Christianity in Australia.
So, before the jelly spines advocate that we let people from terror ridden, war torn countries teach us how to live, I would strongly advise taking a big breath, and holding it for a couple of hours. |

I'm an Agnostic.
I don't have problem with religious symbols.
I do have problem with a female only dress code designed to deter apparent male sexual aggression...."uncovered meat".
I spent a very enjoyable 15 years as a member of the Naturist community, socially interacting with thousands of men, women, and children..... and never encountered this "uncovered meat" phenomena.
Therefore it is utter, unmitigated rubbish, that males require females to have minimal or no visible skin, to avoid uncontrollable arousal in males, leading to subsequent sexual abuse. |

Gran ... the 'uncovered meat' is a quote from a known loony. Are you really going to use that as an indicator of an entire demographic?
Just so you know, if you do, you automatically forfeit the right to be taken seriously. |

Funnily enough, the 'friends' of said known loony haven't exactly been vocal in opposition. Furthermore, his comrade in crime who attacked a number of war widows recently & the deplorable actions of more of the same tribe who bend the rules daily in order to jump the immigration queue, don't exactly do a lot to enhance the reputation of the scum. Maybe not ALL islamics are terrorists, but virtually all terrorists are islamics, and those who don't 'appear' to be so are clearly supporters of terrorism as is shown by their deafening silence on the subject. |

Excellent comment ...aussie.
My background was Christian ......from various European and Baltic countries.....brought up as a Christian with the not uncommon Roman Catholic/Evangelical Christian clash....which actually helped me realise what a load of rubbish all religion is.
But some are MUCH better than others.....and I fully appreciate the problem some have in dealing with death as final. |

A looney who was, perhaps too correctly, stating a tenent of the practical interpretation of Islam.
If shorts and T shirts are OK for males......shorts and T shirts are OK for females.
If Muslim females wish to wear coveralls and a scarf....fine......a sack with a mesh grille or eys slit....fine.
The question is CHOICE...CHOICE.
I also don't have a problem with female Christians wearing a sack with a mesh grill if they like.
Woooops......
Is this morphing into an outlawed MUSLIM/CHRISTAIN/BUDDHIST Thread? |

Personally I wouldn't have a crucifix within a kilometer of my property because its a peculiarly Orthodux symbol rather than a christian one. Anyone who has ever consulted the bible would be fully aware that idols of any kind are taboo. Nevertheless I see the move to outlaw the crucifix as an attack (albeit ill-conceived) on non-islamic culture generally, and thats more than sufficient rason to tell the anti-crucifix fraternity to go get f@cked. |
