The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has had breakfast with several Aboriginal leaders in the lead-up to today's Council of Australian Governments meeting in Darwin.
The representatives include leaders from Darwin's town camps.
Last month, the Labor Senator Trish Crossin argued Darwin town camps should not be left out of plans to improve living conditions in Aboriginal camps in Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.
Mr Rudd says much of the COAG meeting will be dedicated to reducing Indigenous disadvantage.
"The Chief Minister and myself and the other premiers are focusing a large amount of our time on our national partnership on closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
"It means making a difference in areas like welfare, in education and in health outcomes and employment.
"That's what we're on about. But, you know what, turning the whole ship around is going to take some time."
His comments came as the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic Education released a report on how policy is failing to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
The association's Bernie Lovegrove says today's COAG meeting provides a great opportunity to change policies to help close the gap.
"It exists and it's large and policies aren't working," he said.
"So we need to honestly re-examine it and good starting points are better data to build our evidence and more transparency in how funds are structured and spent."

| Well, were is it, it should be starting soon, 'lack of funding'. For many years I have heard of the millions of dollars going into the indigenous fund to help the people, and have never ever heard of where that money has gone, or 'Who' has been the real benefactors. I don't believe in wiping anyones bum for them, but I recon there should be more truth in this area, the people who need the help, should be the ones getting it, not some w.a.n.k.e.r sitting in so called management. |

Well, education is the key for the members of indigenous groups. The problem is that money will not help greatly to get more decent tutors to Alice Springs or Tennant Creek. Not that the teachers there are not good but more of them are needed. Also, so many people live quite a while from the cities. Maybe some exchange program with other countries would help. I guess some esp. young people would happily spend a while in OZ teaching even in the campuses further away from the cities.
Go to www.schooly.com.au and check how many schools exist in NT. It's strange that these schools have internet presence but they lack teachers. |

| Their own attitude and their slack way of life are the greatest problems facing the indigenous population of Australia. |

danielgr_2004 - The Labor government will throw megabucks at this, so they can be seen to be doing something.
That's important to politicians, to be seen to be doing something is better than actually doing something.
In the end, nothing will change until the people involved change. |

| Aboriginal issues will never be solved. It's a no winner. Aborigines have poor leaders that just keep fuelling a victim atttitude. Then you have the aborigines who have buggered up their lives through poor choices, who then go back in time and blame white society for their failings. Aborigines need an attitude change, it isn't just white people who need to change. |

"Mareei 700 is not Mareei. Mareei is Mareei700. I think it's Wharfy."
exactly. In spite of all her other problems you could never fault maree for that sort of grammar and spelling.
I think the problem is that too much money is just being thrown at the problem without any actual thought being put into it.
what the aboriginies DON'T need is more money or handouts no matter how much they clamour for it.
what they need is eduction and training. and also to get rid of these so called 'indigenous organisations' that only exist to serve the corrupt leeches (BOTH blak and white) siphoning all the cash from them. Lets face it ATSIC was the most corrupt organisation in Australian history.
The only way to pull aboriginals, or for that matter anyone, out of the gutter is to give them a sense of pride in themselves and you can only do that with helping them to accomplish something not just handing them a wad of cash and telling them to figure it out for themselves.
It's the whole give a man a fish versus teaching him to fish thing. |

| If an Army has poor leaders it will get beaten. I believe that's the problem with the aborigines. That Mick Dodson is an idiot. |

We got here sgter they had had the place for a reported 40 thousand years.
There was'nt much to show for those 40 thousand years so let's give it time people, about another 39,650 years by Aboriginal rate of progress should do it. |
