These are the pictures in question, tell me you would be happy for a man, a family friend, to take them of your daughter?
I know it was a different culture back then, but even so, this is strange and disturbing behaviour, to me as a mother, at least. |

Undoubtedly? I would be careful not to invest your own hang ups onto others.
To suggest their was a sexual element to the relationship between Carroll and the Hatch sisters???
><><
you write that ;as if it was nemisis suggesting the link between Carol and his subjects-instead of it being a fact that has been readily suggested by more emminent people than her! |

Popularist politicians, talk-back radio and the tabloid media have had a philistines picnic over this
Like Bill Henson, Polixeni Papapetrou is an internationally acclaimed artist frequently exhibeted around the worlds most respected galleries
In the cultural back-water that is Australia, they are a pair of paedophiles
Australia suffered a great exodus of our brightest talent during the Menzies years
With all the hysteria and witch-hunt mentality going on at the moment it could easily happen again

| buzz, artists Henson and Papapetrou should still be subject to the same laws and standards as everyone else. It is irrelevant that they are internationally renowned and also irrelevant that their work has been shown in galleries anywhere. justify their work on the merit of the work not the 'fame' of the artists |

Haunted Country
September 14, 2006- October 28, 2006
Reception: September 14, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Polixeni Papapetrou
Foley Gallery
547 W 27th St
Polixeni Papapetrou
Whroo, 1855 (2006)
Foley Gallery is pleased to announce Haunted Country, an exhibition of new photographs by Australian photographer Polixeni Papapetrou. Inspired by real and fictional accounts of children who have gone missing in the Australian bush, Papapetrou revisits the sites of the most notorious disappearances and stages scenes proposing what the physical and psychological circumstances may have been like for these lost and wandering children. These include sites in Victoria such as Wimmera, Daylesford and Hanging Rock where most cases of the 19th and 20th century have been reported. The figure of this bush-lost child is one of the poignant themes in Australia’s cultural remembering. Papapetrou’s desire was to create photographs that embody the harrowing psychological aspects of these stories. She wants to draw the viewer into this emotional space, experience the undercurrent of the psychological drama unfolding and make connections between past and present consciousness about land and country. The bush-lost child acts as a metaphor to reflect upon other ways that children become lost to adults. In these images, Papapetrou tries to capture feelings about Australia, but also about children and their external vulnerability in both the natural and social orders of our culture.

And who could blame them ?
It is 'only in Australia' that artistic talent garners these depths of miss-understanding, un-educated commentary and simpleton level of critique
Melbourne was the ONLY city in the world to ban a life-size replica of Michelangelo's 'David', in the '60's

Didn't check that link last night - but I see what Patti (and the Carroll critics) was getting at!
Interestingly, unlike the 6 year old's picture in question, Carroll's Plate 1 did NOT reveal a nipple...
That said, neither of them was as innocent as it at first appeared - they are both haunting! |

Buzz, Read this....Quote - The art magazine which published photographs of a naked 6yr old girl has damaged the artistic community with its shock tactics - Quote Director Liz Ann Macgregor, Museum of Contemporary Art.
This is from a leading person within the art community
Bill Henson Quote - devastated that the niche magazine has further divided the art community. The protest labelled a "cheap shallow stunt" - Quote
A little girl was put in a position where she should not be put in the public eye, it was in protest for another artist as stated, if that is art why wasn't it brought out when she was 6yrs old. Get todays Daily Telegraph 8/7/2008, go to page 17 & tell me if that is ART or a PORTRAIT !!!
You would not know art if it was slapping you in the face.
That photo is something for that families wall in their own home, not for the publics eyes to see. The painting in the background has not even got a mention yet.
ART OR A PORTRAIT ?? you tell us all !! You have got off the issue about page 3 of this topic....Go get the paper matey !! |

"I always call him Lewis Carroll Carroll, because he was the first Humbert Humbert. Have you seen those photographs of him with little girls? He would make arrangements with aunts and mothers to take the children out. He was never caught, except by one girl who wrote about him when she was much older."

| The young girl should not be used to justify the actions of adults...the images were only published to cash in on the Henson controvercy...there is nothing wrong with nudity...it is the exploitation of children that is the issue...why were'nt these photoes published 5 years ago if it is only about the art??? |

the pose by that six year old was a 'suggestive' kind of pose seen in adult mags,
not what children pose for. |

| Cmon Buzz...why bring out the young girl to defend the actions of the magazine and adults...surely they should have defended their own actions...I do not agree with use of the young girl to front the media about this controvercy...her actions have NEVER been in question...it is the adults who are hiding behind her inocence that I do not like. |

have you got todays paper BUZZ ??? You are the only person defending the parents actions !!
You are the one that is trying to get off the beating track !!! The painting has not got a mention, the naked little girl is the one copping the flak, from her parents wrong doing, I feel sorry for the girl, she is been put in front of the media, because of her parents protest, am I right or not, she could not even answer the questions the media asked, her father took over... Why, because she is a child & could not answer things that her parents should be facing themselves... is it artwork or a portrait you have still not answered that !!! Read the Quotes to buddy, they are in todays paper, also read what slowdrivers told us.... Sponsorship of the mag is being pulled, this topic is about 3 photographs that were used as a protest, not because of there art value.... To me they are not porn & they are not art.... They are a Portrait for the family home not in the public place, that's why Bill Hensons art work was put behind closed doors.... Not all people like that sort of stuff & a little girl has to defend her parents actions, which is a bit weak for the Parents & magazines to do.
Do you agree or not Buzz |

BUZZ..... You have gone quiet on us ???
Why not answer the questions put to you.. They are not hard to answer !!!
You know so much about the artist of these photographs, you must be part of that crowd & people are starting to realize that, so go through & answer the questions asked of you, because you have not answered one question. it's called justification of a question. |
