How do you think the 11 year old child now, would feel if someone told her bluntly that crusty old men are whacking off over her image?
Do you think she'd feel uncomfortable?
A 6 year old or 11 year old isn't capable of giving informed consent to their naked image being displayed all over the world. They can't possibly understand the ramifications of their actions. |

How to protect themselves from the very real dangers in our society.
You don't send your kids out after dark alone. You don't send them across the road alone in peak hour traffic. You don't display their naked image all over the world.
It's called being a responsible parent and protecting them from harm. |

No doubt their are several paedophiles living in her neighbourhood (and/or working at or around her school) - any one of whom may now have developed a dangerous obsession with her...
It would be a terrible irony if she was attacked (or worse) because her parents wanted to prove her mother was just an artist...just like Henson... |

Because I am realistic.
I am not in denial, in the name of "art".
Yes, paedos COULD be whacking off over anything.
But, do you get more gratification from an image of a woman wearing clothes or do you get more gratification over a woman in a penthouse magazine?
You don't put kids in unnecessary situations where you KNOW people will misuse their image.
That is the reality of the situation.
To suggest otherwise is sticking your head in the sand and supporting art for the sake of art.
A little social conscience goes a long way. |

You can be as airy fairy and as artsy fartsy as you want to be.
The FACT is... there are sickos in our society and we share the responsibility of protecting ourselves and our children from them.
While it is true that a bully is responsible for his/her own behaviour, the potential victim has the responsibility NOT to knowingly put himself or herself in danger.
Where children are concerned, the onus is upon the parents to make wise choices to prevent them suffering harm.
I'm not suggesting we wrap children up in cotton wool. However, it is unnecessary for children's naked images to be published or displayed in public. No one will suffer if it is not done. Conversely, the children involved face very real potential for harm if the practice continues.
Children rights to safety and dignity come before artist's rights to free expression. |

It does. Getting hysterical over something as innocuous as these pictures is not necessarily being socially conscious it is pushing a barrow, using a child as cannon fodder, pretty much what you are accusing the parents of.
And if you consider the photos to be similar to those that appear in Penthouse ... well you obviously see things in them that I do not
Where is the social good in wandering up to an 11 year old kid and telling them that there could be an old man whacking off over one of their pictures?
If you did that to any children in my care, I would have you arrested forthwith. |

Furthermore...... I come back to my original position.... it is morally and ethically bereft to use the image of a naked child to make an adult's point.
It is also despicable to use the image of a naked child for the sole purpose of generating controversy which, obviously, will increase sales of this magazine enormously and make some one a bucketload of money. I'm sceptical as to which issue was the primary directive. |

On another personal note, 3 incidents which shaped my teen years and subsequent life: -
* Year 7 walking home from school with friend, bloke pulls up, speaks softy, we FOOLISHLY move closer because we cannot hear, bloke speaks of fetish with our undergarments - HE IS CONVICTED PAEDOPHILE LIVING DIRECTLY BEHIND OUR SCHOOL (next day friend is by herself as she has free period and leaves early - he is on foot...)
* Also in year 7, another naked man sits masturbating in his car as we run past on our bi-weekly PE run around the neigbourhood...
* On train, Thy alone, man in trenchcoat sits opposite masturbating with pen!s fully exposed - Thy cannot remember much of the 1/2 hour that followed...
Oh, and that's just the direct incidents that made the most impression - sister was gang-raped and another girl from same school was attacked at knifepoint on her way home...
Sh!t happens - and it might just pay not to be a sh!t magnet... |

And this will always be the case, nothing wrong with alerting children to the fact. But do you also advise them of what those dark figures in their cars may be doing behind closed doors?
I knew not to talk to strangers from a very young age, I knew nothing of paedophiles until much later ... there is vigilance and then there is hysteria.
How can it be similarly argued that children should be allowed to be children and that children should have their heads filled with our adult hang-ups and fears? |
