| I haven't read all the posts on this topic, so excuse me if I am repeating something already said - apart from the controversy involved in all of this, I fail to see how photography can really be classified as art. It only takes knowledge of how to operate a camera, using light, good subject matter and composition - all of which can be taught. No real 'artistic' talent needed. Apologies to all those photographers out there who consider themselves artists... |

It isn't pornographic, but it steps over the boundaries of taste, the mother knew that full well, when she took those pics, she interspersed some very lovely pics with some rather more dubious ones.
Very devious, very clever, very Cash Cow.

| aprilhud & slowdriver.....i have just read from page 10 to now, it all comes down to the parents put a 6yrs old girl in a position of harm, which they shouldn't have. The little girl has done no wrong, the parents have as they stated they did it in protest for Bill Henson, the girl had no choice in the matter but the parents did & by law they are the guardians of this child until the age of 16yrs of age. To me that is not art, it is a portrait that should have been left in their family home, they knew it would blow up like this, but to use an 11yr old to defend herself for their actions is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. The father is a critic that doesn't like criticism, the mother has said nothing, many main players in the art world have critisied them, sponsorship has been pulled from the magazine & 86% of the public has said it is not the right thing to do. So all these people that think there is nothing wrong with it really have no idea what they are talking about, because they are all trying to get off the topic that they are writting about(6 Year old nudes now)but one thing I have to say is that BUZZ you are one of the biggest fools I have ever come across, you have not said one thing that is worth talking about, it is fools like you that create problems such as this.... Personally I think you should undo your "bow tie" a bit & let your brain get some oxygen !! The painting that you have spoken about is behind a little girl that had no choice in the matter as she was only 6yr old when it happened & as a 51yr old you would think you had more common sense about right & wrong than anyone. The young girl was left to defend herself on national television for no reason what so ever.... The parents "stuffed up" & you know it & so does the rest of Australia. |

You are entitled to your opinion, as is buzz. Just because others may not share your carefully cultivated moral indignation, does not mean that they are not entitled to voice their opinions.
Many regular posters here who usually agree with each other on most issues have opposing views on this one (I, myself have found myself arguing with posters I have a great respect for, such as peace and thy and, regrettably, losing my patience on occasion), and good for them, that's the stuff of robust debate.
Just because YOU think that there is skulduggery afoot, does not make it so. Just because YOU think that the artist is somehow a bad mother does not make it so.
Because others think differently to you does NOT necessarily make them stupid or perverse
I work in the arts and my colleagues who are more well-versed in the plastic/visual arts than I am are split on whether these pictures have any merit, some feel they do, some feel they don't, but they are all grown-up enough to realise that people are entitled to their opinions and those opinions will sometimes differ.
Art does admit of quite a few conventions; of certain styles and forms that distinguish it, otherwise we wouldn't be able to stand in a gallery and label one painting an expressionist piece and the next a cubist piece, or a piece of music as baroque, classical, romantic or modern merely by listening to it. It is not a case of just snapping a few photos and calling it art any more than it is throwing a Cello down a staircase and calling the resulting noise music. It doesn't work that way. So the argument that any pervert can get away with the possession of child porn merely by labelling it "art" is specious as well. |

And the argument that the parents are putting the child in harm's way???
Say a mother buys her child an iPod as a gift and the child is beaten up and has it taken off them by some criminal. Do you really think we should blame the parents for this incident?
Blaming the victim or their family for a crime that someone HAS perpetrated against them is wrong as far as I am concerned; blaming them for a hypothetical crime that may or may not occur in the future is just plain bizarre. |
