| i thought this discussion was about bill henson's photographs which have now been siezed by police who have DECIDED they are child pornography. missionaries do have plenty to answer for but we are talking about 20 pictures out of god knows how many in the show that have offended the first handful of people to see them and now the rest of the country misses out on even having a say. I'd not hesitate to call that an active removal of civil liberties at the very least. |

"It's all about certain peoples rights to free expression. This is fine if the setting is appropriate, but all these things should be considered in accordance with the place and the time."
co1868 this is not about people's rights to free expression OVER the prevention of abuse!!!!!
sex is everywhere.....the adults are sexualising their own relationships between the genders, they are even doing it to their kids in kindergarten!!!...the one time the genders are meant to be simply children together and no girl can talk to a boy without all proclaiming it a boyfriend/girlfriend thing...pictures everywhere, sexualised clothing everywhere, xrated 'call me' girls on national television......
the Huggies adds are televisied into the home.....to normal people....they are babies..to the perverted they are enticing??
i would prefer the adults start behaving like adults, i think that would have far more effect with the paedophile epidemic then banning one set of photos that hardly anyone would be seeing compared to television, magazines - mainstream society!
and human beings need touch!....when touch is denied that also creates problems for the children???
and men and women need educating about touch too it seems......popular media state often that intimacy = sex!!
children are the most open and intimate creatures and it does not mean sex...it means being open and emotionally close...with physical 'healthy' touching or contact
i don't agree with these photos in many ways/ in other ways..they are in the eye of the beholder...but that is not the point being made is it?
the point is about protecting the children...
why is everyone focussing on a little gallery when target got away with selling certain clothing to kids???? would money and big commercial orgs have anything to do with it.......
rock spiders fall through the gaps, they are easily missed, especially if all the noise and attention is focussed elsewhere? |

How can the denial of your right to witness something illegal be a removal of your civil liberties. Because you dont get to see a murder, is it less of a murder? |

Oh so we should put them back in the gallery and let the general population decide if they are offensive or not?
I mean god forbid we should offend the toffee nosed art society, i mean its not like they contribute anything to society - how can photography be classed in the "art" category like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo etc?
get a grip mate - he was taking advantage of a young girl and who knows how many others he has done this to or could do it to. |

<<<would anybody have raised an eyebrow if it HAD been David Hamilton's exhibition?>>>
If David Hamilton takes the same type of photographs...I presume ...yes.
Anyway, the tide of public opinion has spoken, and those affected by this opinion, will have to live with it.
Once again, the bottom line .....will the outcome make any impression on what I hope we all want....the minimisation of the sexual abuse of children.
That's it for me for tonight...I'll have a quick look at the thread tomorrow....if it's still here....goodnight everybody. |

not to mention a screaming insult to the taxpayers of the country.
I hope he sues the ar se off everyone who has accused him of being a paedophile.
if he is a paedophile he's the first i've heard of to take photos of his victims with mum and dad watching and then put them in a gallery with his name on them.
is he dumb as well?
wake up australia to what is really going on here.

"The problem with Naturism is that its a choice made by an adult and occasionally effects a child. The child has no say. And i have no problem with naturism but an adultshould not have the power to say a child can endure being naked because a parent has it as a lifestyle choice."
trevor..that is ridiculous...EVERY family is in the same situation...many parents impose their religious indoctrination, their heavymetal lifestyle, whatever...on the children...it is what families are about...the child lives in the same lifestyle as the adults.....and what child have you ever seen that did not enjoy running around naked????
it is natural to them...they have no inhibitions about it unless the adults say so... |

The fact is he took a picture of a naked CHILD and passed it off as art - if he has done nothing wrong than i am sure all will be restored to him.
I highly doubt people would have found his "work" very artistic, it doesn't take much skill to press a button on a camera. |

I couldnt help but notice the ever increasing amount of men that were arriving at the gallery from all over the country to see the exhibition, and vented their dissapointment to the media outside.
I wondered what the rush was or if it was a common thing that lovers of art actually do - going to the extremes of hopping on a plane to see an art exhbition ?
I just cant seem to get my head around why anyone would want to see naked photos of a 12 year old girl let alone jump on a plane to see them?? |

| Does anybody remember the uproar over the movie Salo a few years ago? It was banned and the only poeple to see it were the censors and some celebrities sent by channel 9 who were sent to see it because they were doing a story on it? One of these poeple was Sam Newman!! So Sam saw it and only a few others as well!! |

<Why ?

Because that differentiation wont last forever if we blithly say a photograph of a naked girl is implictly porn. Having seen the photos, there is virtually nothing to see and I do mean nothing. Not only is it not pornographic it only barely passes for nudity. You'd need a lot of imagination to even think it was pornographic. |

How many parents would have nude photographs of their teenage daughters in their albums? Bit of scaremongering going on here.
The fact here is not whether it is pornographic or not. It is whether she is a minor. |

| like most teenagers i am sure that at some point this young lady would feel embarrassed that thousands are looking at her naked body. thats normal.......but needing or desiring to take such photos and viewing them is to me just a tadd perversed. sorry fokes but i really feel somethings a miss. i certainly wouldnt take naked photos of my son at 13 and hang them on the wall of my home. baby pictures are something quite different but you rarely see them blown up and hang on the walls of peoples homes. so this is just bullsh..t and something to make this man more known than he deserves to be. oh and i agree if this exhibition got men off their backsides , on a plane and into a gallery then i gotta say. yukkiiiii pooooooo something really stinks and i think the police are right to do such a thing. i am all for freedom and treating kids as kids not for making them exhibitions.......as they are maturing. |

I think it is highly likely that Bill Henson is a paedophile. He has an obsession with photographing nude teenagers (male and female) in sexually suggestive poses. It's odd that people assume he's not, just because he's a famous artist. Apparently early in his career he also used to slink around and secretly photograph young girls at bus stops.
Although that's possibly not something you'll find referenced anywhere, that was long before he became famous. We studied his work in some depth at art school.
It's just a wonder it has taken this long before someone has actually decided to take action. |
