Pensioners get shirts off in protest Reply to this message
Hundreds of pensioners, some shirtless, have disrupted traffic in Melbourne's city centre in a protest against the Rudd government's lack of support for seniors in the federal budget.

The protest, inspired by topless taxi drivers who won safety concessions after a city centre protest rally two weeks ago, was org *** ed with the backing of Family First senator Stephen Fielding.

Mr Fielding stripped off his shirt in support of the protest, while two elderly women wore only their bras.

Several men also stripped to the waist after the protesters walked from the steps of Flinders St Station into the intersection with Swanston Street.

The protesters were calling for between $70 and $100 extra per week in their pensions.

Traffic returned to normal after about 15 minutes.

Yeah, well, THAT's a Top Story! Kinda gross but. No offence, but I'm only 41 and hardly a fashion plate.

Wow! They're so out there. What's the temperature like down there? Must be cool, hope the poor dears don't get a chill, but that effort has to be worth $100 a week extra!

well maybe if they'd saved for their own retirement it wouldn't be such a great deal of an issue for them , if the leaders they'd elected in their life time had made adequate plans for the future it would be the same , you oldies made your own bed now lie in it and stop complaining how bout my generation who have to support you because of your lack of awareness about the future

I'm just wondering how long it will be before the new government award themselves a new payrise? I bet that was factored into the budget! Wonder if the opposition would object to it?

Yes we made our own beds, we fought a world war, Vietnam, Korea etc. so that your generation could enjoy the things you now enjoy, when we read such arrogant bias as this it makes us wonder why we ever bothered, maybe we should have just given up and let the J@panese and the Germans have the country, then you would have something to complain about.

Federal politicians will forego a pay rise as the Rudd government strives to show it's serious about keeping the economy in good shape.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced the wage freeze in parliament, meaning MP's could miss out on thousands of extra dollars a year.

Mr Rudd proposed that the parliament support a regulation which will stop federal politicians' pay going up until mid-2009.

"Furthermore the government proposes that when this measure comes to close in mid-2009 that there be no claw-back avenue for any salary foregone between now and then," Mr Rudd told parliament during question time.

If this is what being an Australian means, you are an absolute disgrace to this country and your fellow Australians, one day if you live long enough you will be old as they are and I hope you get treated exactly the same because that is all you deserve, if you are also allowed to breed then thank God for the immigration that will eventually breed your type out.

Bit hard to save for retirement with barely any superannuation in those days and saving to buy what they needed instead of want want want now.

Keep dreaming folk!! They won't even give you any sympathy for the plight that age pensioners are in!!They are simply out of touch and always will be,untill they try to live on the miserable pittance they give us that is called a pension??? Age citizens do not count for anything as is quiet obvious from the way they have treated US in this budget! But we will remember them!!

I cannot understand why the aged pensioners of this country are so demanding in their search for more money, yes it is not much to live on and when rent and rates have to be paid not much is left, but surly by the time you are old.......er you should not have too many needs and if handled with care your pension can go a long way.
I am an aged pensioner, paying rent and all my utilities I have found over the years that if you can manage to pay every fortnight something to your utilities, plus your rent, put aside a certain amount for food and gas, you have to be strong and determined not to allow yourself to receive big bills, if you do, you will never have enough money.
Every fortnight I give $25 to each of my utilities pay my rent etc, sometimes I get to a pension day with only a couple of dollars, but heck, I have a roof over my head and food on the table and at this age it should be enough.
I am not saying I do not need more to live on, but I blowed if I would take off my clothes to get more, we live soley on our aged benefit and nothing else, we have a nice home and we are happy, even though we have lost our children through death and distance.
And to cap it off I am in credit to Alinta gas for the wonderful sum of $70. So try it my way, it works.
