RACIST attacks, second-rate colleges, greedy landlords and low-paid jobs are making life a misery for many foreign students in Melbourne.
Seventeen foreign students died in Victoria in the past year from boarding home fires, murders, car crashes and drownings.
A savage assault on student taxi driver Jalvinder Singh two weeks ago has led to warnings by the Indian press that racist attacks in Melbourne are on the rise.

A Herald Sun investigation found that many of the 135,000 foreign students living in Melbourne faced difficulties.
A group of landlords, including one man who owns 70 houses, are cashing in, with some charging weekly rates of $85 a head when up to 14 students live in one house.
Eight private "colleges" catering to foreign students have been forced to shut their doors in the past three years for failing to meet educational standards.
Thousands of foreign students are driving cabs or doing $5-an-hour menial jobs to afford their education.
Federation of Indian Students of Australia secretary Gautam Gupta said racism was rampant.
He said he knew of eight students who had been assaulted in Melbourne in the past month. Two returned to India in fear.
Victoria University housing officer Hean Chang agreed that landlords were exploiting students.

INDIANS are being warned that Melbourne is unsafe, after a series of attacks on students from the sub-continent.
The international students swarming into this and other state capitals are paying a price much higher than their education fees, with 40 dying in less than a year.

| Export education is a $12 billion earner for Australia. Seems daft to jeopardize it when it creates a lot of jobs too |

<<<The international students swarming into this and other state capitals are paying a price much higher than their education fees, with 40 dying in less than a year.>>>
How many of these 40 deaths, among the 370,000 foreign students studying here, were through race specific (racist) attacks?
Any such attack is, of course, one too many, such as the attack on the Cronulla lifesaver, that sparked the long overdue response to the decade of race specific (racist) attacks on girls attending Cronulla beach.
I understood the students were here to obtain degrees leading to professional employment in there home country.
However.
...................
About 20,900 obtained permanent residency last year after graduating -- almost triple the 2004 total -- with many focusing on courses that can earn residency points.
.......................
It would seem the intention of many is to gain Australian residency.
The gender ratio is of cultural interest. In the case of Chinese students, the ratio is 1 female to 5 males. In the case of Indian students it's 1 female to 70 males. Interesting, especially when residency appears to be the motivation. |

bill, o/seas students do NOT displace local students. Universities are allocated HECS places by the government and the full fee students are separate. Universities are actually penalized if they exceed approved HECS enrollments. They actually provide resources that would not be available if universities had to rely on public money alone. The industry is worth to the Australian economy $12 billion and without these funds Australian universities would be in a big mess. Not all foreign students are rich either. Families make big sacrifices so their children can study overseas. |

greatgrans you are correct but this benefits which country? Australia is getting the benefit of these graduates free of charge which for local students, the taxpayer would be subsidizing. By the way not all who obtain PR actually stay here. Some return home anyway |

<<It just goes to prove that all foreigners especially the studet variety are nothing but trouble making heathens looking for a free ride . Dont trust anyone who cant speak English !>>
Where is the free ride you write about - they pay their way and in advance? As for trouble makers, I have dealt with with 100s possible 1000s over many years and this claim is far from my experience. |

| Dear Abith....Just wondering how long you would last if you were a foreign student...these kids have to deal with learning a very difficult language, doing lessons in a new language and keeping their marks up, homesickness, racist remarks, bashings, and loneliness. What would you accomplish if you had to put up with this sort of treatment? |

There are quite a few extreme right thinkers on here, who have no basis for argument. Just shoot their mouths off all the time.
Guys, which country has more English speaking people than any other in the world? |

Their countries have universities, they should be studying there.
It's not our job to educate them. As shown above they're only studying to gain permanent residency...backdoor immigration.
Our universities should be full of our own students studying something, even if dumbed-down basic courses in cooking, arts, environmental design and management, animal welfare, vets assistants, etiquette and manners/grooming, horticulture, medicine[we might as well have an almost-doctor working in rural areas as an overseas trained or foreign student trained here doctor who won't touch patients because of religious beliefs and can't speak English, only having passed medicine at uni her because the govt wanted the money].
Many foreign students are writing drivel in their exams and getting passed, some with 'Honours'...a professor was sacked for objecting to the practice and told all to the media.
NO foreign students here! |

I live across the road from what appears to be a flea ridden hotel for Indian students - sadly it is just a 3 bedroom house!
The landlord is a parasite and just collects rent - ignoring requests to fix things and make the house more liveable.
The landlord is from China - and that says it all doesn't it!
I feel for ALL students who are doing it tough - but those Chinese students who bussed themselves up to Canberra to spew their communist regime support when the torch arrived - should be immediately deported.
They think China is so damn great - then they should stay there. No ifs no buts. |
