Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
Bought a plasma TV a while back and installed it with no problems. Recently, it started dropping out - some channels worse than others - and sought advice. Was told to buy quad-shield cable, did so, and all was well, for a while.

Now, however, the dropouts appear to have returned.

I have a conventional antenna and most rooms in the house have a standard antenna plug. Do I need to upgrade the internal wiring, or buy a digital antenna?

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
i would suggest cleaning up all f or whatever joints in your splitter box first! then apply bit of vaseline on the joints and put all back together - what you described - are rather clean symptoms of aerial connection problem, as you mentioned aerial in every room, culprit is usually splitter box...

check of course all aerial connection

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
might be a waste of time bulldoost, i'd do some fault finding first.

if this is the first time he has used digital the antenna may need adjusting slightly.

i found people go used to a tiny bit of snow on their @n@log picture but as we know, digital is either good or nothing.

i would like to know whether it is all channels that drop out at anyone time, and if they drop out completely to 0%.

next time it does have a look..

this is going to get some people who understand reception etc. offside, but where i live it is impossible to get a decent picture, alot of people ended up using satellite, but because i only have a CRT TV i've used a 20db booster (picked up at any electrical store, try WOW) and this has stopped my dropouts and it doesn't skip a beat.

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
dissent, you really need a digital aerial (the side by side is the best) plus a Hills low noise digital masthead amplifier. I also boost the amplifier with a power pack between the wall connection and the tv input, but with multiple outlets and a splitter you will probably need to boost after the splitter (between splitter and aerial amp).

Plasma is not the friendliest for digitv, you are better off with LCD.

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
Rhanks very much all, for your advice. I don't know where the splitter box is located, but it might be worth checking. In general, though, it sounds like I might have to get a proper digital antena. The old an*alogue unit probably isn't up to the job.

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
the thing is, digital tv can run fine off and @nalog antenna...

its a bit of a had, its not transmitting anything so specs are not to much of a concern here, as long as its VHF & UHF the antenna should be fine.. i mean a coat hanger will give you a signal setup in the right way in a good area.

My best advice as someone who has worked as an Audio Visual Technician, is get a db booster, 20db gain if you can.

if you have had a reception at any point with digital, the capabilities of the antenna aren't really in question in my view.

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
digital will work with VHF and UHF antenna's but with vhf it's not design for digital wave, the go is most tv station transmitters will be cutting VHF signal off by 2010 try receiving HD on a VHF antenna, UHF would be the better option here. if your signal is dropping out and the meter on the range said weak signal then it could just be the transmitter but i say it's your antenna and cabling in my view!!!!!

a booster may help but be careful of not over ranging the signal as digital isn't like just UHF signals where a booster can enhance the picture with digital signals it can do the reverse with my experience just turn the gain on the UHF booster off see what picture is like then turn gain to 1/4 check picture and so on until you get a good quality picture i have had installing digital decoders.

if you live city area no need for booster only if you are many km from transitter!!!!!

check connections and antenna that will be where your pro will be, unless you have a sick decoder box????????

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
"or buy a digital antenna?"

There is no such thing as a digital antenna its just a con to make money.

there is *** antennas and good antennas but no such thing as a digital antenna,if you can pick up all anologue stations reasonably well digital shouldnt be a problem.

each split reduces the signal strength ,all a booster box does is overload the dbs to make up for what will be lost on the splits (leaving you with what u would of had if u hadnt split it ).it does not actually improve the signal picked up by the antenna itself, basically if your antenna is picking up a bad signal you cant make it better with a booster box, although it will stop any further weaking of that signal caused by splits.(some people have no idea what a booster box is for a booster box with no splits will make your signal worse they dont just amplify the good signal they amplify the garbage aswell)

check all your power connections our digital was stopping, and audio popping,it was a slightly dodgy piggyback in the kitchen that was causing electrical interference, its not always an antenna problem, anything slightly dodgy in way of an electrical connection will give digital the sh1ts.

if its better in the rain check the ground stake on your property and soak the sand/soil whatever its in,(dont take the wires of it)

If its one of those woolies set top boxes just throw it in the bin.

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
I too have that problem esp with channel 7. My coax cable is satelite quality, so not sure if it's that..As far as I know digital doesn't come though in wave, but in code, therefore your set top box or whatever decodes it.. It's supposed to be that if you don't recieve 100% then you get nothing...That's the bit that confuses me, cos i look at the diagnostics in my set top and see the the reception could be around 75-80% so WTF go figure...Reckon it's a con job!

"I too have that problem esp with channel 7"

Yep - althoug I experience dropouts on most channels (surprisingly, SBS has never been a problem), those on Ch7 are always the most prominent and the worst.

It's weird - sometimes, I don't have any problem for a couple of weeks on any of the channels. Then, without warning, the problem starts again.

Could it be partly because of weather?

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
b6662001 - if you live in morwell, try first good orientation of your aerial... if it is directed towards bowbow - you can have trouble! especially in bad weather... try direct your aerial direct towards callignee, transmitter there is well visible from most of morwell and you will have much more stabile signal than from bow-bow...

in traralgon and rosedale try rather mt bowbow than callignee as then bow-bow is visible but not callignee...

now, another "mystery" somebody mentioned "digital antenna", somebody mentioned that there is no such thing... and it is true, that there is no such thing as "digital antenna"!

about signal amplifiers, yes, they are good if you know what you do with them... do not buy ever, permanently seted ones! buy regulated one and when you connect it, first get it on lowest setting, then increase in about 5% increments till you reach best signal quality. most modern line amplifiers have filter build in, therefore usual noise is filtered, but if you have 2 stations on close frequency - this will not be filtered correctly, if you have strong station (police stations are notorious for that!) close by, they can override main signal and produce excessive signal noise.

about "satellite grade" - grade have nothing to do! you need proper shielding and resistance! if you have 75ohm (+ - 10%) cable, not longer than 180m - you should be fine... on 5m piece do not bother with super cables...

Re:Digital TV dropouts Reply to this message
What I would like to know is when are the tv stations going to give us more HD TV to watch...You buy the damn reciever and the programming from the stations is virtually zero? WTF? Are we all just getting had or what?

My advice to people considering buying plasma and high def boxes...DON'T, wait until the stations get up to speed!
