Have just had a fall out so I'm back on IE for the moment. Firefox was stalling, getting half way through opening something and then stopping and not responding to go further. Trouble shoot said to install the latest version, did that, it was OK for a few days and has started again. I noticed with the new version you had the option of US english or British english so I took the Pommie one because of spell check --- which didn't work anyway, or suddenly I became a good speller.
I have XP, so what am I doing wrong, considering I've had firefox for years. |

| Try MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Works well. Has found nasties on mine that sneaked in under Defender & Spybot. |

Try clearing out any data caches and also clear out your history.
Firefox, albiet good competition for IE, it still has tonnes of issues.
One fix i saw was to create a new profile in the application. This does work in speeding the app back up. |

ol_whal - you mentioned that you run avg, and that is actually your problem...
remove avg, install any other antivirus and your problems will be solved... |

| Interesting, bulldoost, I have had trouble with Firefox lately doing the same thing, and also running avg. What other antivirus do you recommend. I don't want to give up using Firefox as I hate IE. |

Strange goings on diamonte54, I've had AVG for over 10 years without any problems at all untill just lately, it's working fine with IE. AVG isn't the problem I feel, it's firefox, unless of course FF and AVG have had a falling out.
I missed something so will do what ???? said about malaware??
Actually, if you download the new firefox they recommend a ???? if you want to have a look. Let me know how you get on |

actually avg re-wried in december last year they boolean search engine and make it to work similar to symantec, in free version is activated as well "free" reporting on usage...
now, how this work before, file was checked upon opening and upon closing and that was all, current model work that file is checked during opening, during usage and upon close, this cause most of applications, including firefox to run much slower than they should, sometimes even 60% slower, standard antivirus software check cookie send by page upon arrival and that is all, it is fast - in case of avg, it checks not only cookie but all links on the page!!! this slow searching to that extend that windows regard application as inactive (frozen) and is terminating it. do not happend to ie because ie is interacting differently with windows.
and do please check first what time is taking you to start up your computer without avg and all junk which comes with it and then with avg, according to my tests on several computers (and yes, i do have letter confirming that from grisoft), without avg clean startup is between 39 and 60sec, with avg this extend to 150sec to 240sec...
my whole family and i (including our various businesses there is 3 servers (we run small isp), currently 13 desktops and 11 laptops), all are using paid version of nod32, even our server have nod32 on it. it cost money, but it do exactly what is designed to do, we do not have any virus since 2002 when we switched to it. most our customers are running nod32 as well without any problem.
i do trust as well sophos and kaspersky lab, i do not trust at all symantec, mcaffe, norton... |

| Thanks bulldoost, "i do not trust at all symantec , mcaffe, norton....." me either. But many do, so each to his own. We shouldn't knock something just because we don't like it. |

A good free anti-virus program is Avira Anti-Vir. I've been using it for about 4 years with no problems.
It is a full program, not a cut-down or time-limited trial version, and is regularly updated. |

| Me and firefox have had a rocky relationship of late too. Ever since it made me install an 'upgrade' several months ago I've had problems. It's still not bad enough for me to go back to IE though. |
