MICROSOFT is blaming retailers for the fact Australians are paying almost $200 more for the same version of Windows 7 as their overseas counterparts.
The price of Windows 7 in the US and UK is consistently cheaper than in Australia based on the latest currency conversion rates.
For example, an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate costs $429 in Australia but only $US219.99 ($236) in the US – a difference of $193 for the same product.
Windows 7 Professional outright will cost Australians $449, but the US gets it for $128 less, with the retail price of $US299.99 ($322). |

So, we're still being ripped off with Windows software prices, are we? What a surprise.
Wonder what happened to the price reductions we should have seen after the introduction of Product Activation with Windows XP in 2001? After all, that was supposed to be the main reason for activation... less piracy = cheaper software.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-200
<<< Doesn't a reduction in software piracy ultimately lead to lower prices?
You'd think so. But strangly, Windows XP will be the most expensive new version of Windows ever released for home users. >>>
That was in 2001.
Don't tell me they lied? *rolls eyes* |

Well, at $429.00 I won't be rushing out and buying it just yet.
BUT...the RC is so stable & reliable, I'll just keep using that, for a while yet. |

Seen a lot of ads in today's newspaper for Windows 7... Harvey Norman... Officeworks... etc.
They're all advertising the almost half price 'upgrade' version, I see. No mention of the very, very expensive 'full' version. lol.
They did the same thing with Vista nearly 3 years ago. |

Yes retailers here are massive MASSIVE rip offs for software.!
Not just software, its EVERYTHING we pay for.
Im a musician and the price difference from here to the US is not just staggering its downright pathetic highway robbery.
Even secondhand goods are being sold at over charged prices.
I went looking for a line6 POD PRO on ebay
In australia $650 (including pedal)
In the USA $50 (including pedal) yes that says FIFTY not Five hundred |

| I went into Harvey Norman on Saturday and queried the prices with a senior salesman and he said "Oh we don't make any money on Windows 7, it is a loss leader for us" (They sell it at a loss to get people into the store) It is bad enough being ripped off by the Aussie retailers without them blaming the prices on MS and even barefaced lying to the customers. He tried to say there was only a 6% margin but that was swallowed up by staff wages - WAKE UP MR NORMAN AND GET YOUR STAFF TRAINED TO AT LEAST TELL THE TRUTH.....AS YOU RIP US ALL OFF. BTW for those that don't know - the upgrade will do a clean instal just like a full version ....check out the Windows 7 website. |

| I've refused to buy ANY Microsoft product since they came up with that activation insanity. OK so they can do whatever they want but don't expect me to go along with it. The only XP & Vista systems I've had are the non-activation versions that come with Toshiba laptops, my desktop machines run Solaris & servers BSD |

They are both so stable its boring, but unlike Ubuntu, BSD never did get the GUI stuff properly sorted, it doesn't like either OpenOffice or StarOffice & a lot of device drivers are hit & miss. None of those are an issue with a server but they are a right royal PITA with a desktop. Solaris does deserve the 'Slowaris' title on older Intel hardware but its fine on SPARC or AMD 64 bit systems & I don't have issues with any peripherals in the compatibility list. Windows generally is simply too icky for words afer Solaris. |

| by the way, if anyone is interested, wholesale price on windows seven is about $115.00 in australia from any of three main ozzie distributors... you must buy bit more than one do to have it at that price, harvey norman bought over 50000 copies and i do not think that they pay more than actually $78.00 per copy... |

Started with openSUSE on old machine, now running their SLED on work machines, both worked well with online support forums.
openSUSE seems more development oriented, where potential problems are found - BTW did not find any in the year was using it.
SLED also very stable just what business wants, with phone and online support.

Well, I finally couldn't resist the temptation.
I've bought Windows 7 Home Premium today. Managed to get an OEM version and a 1TB hard drive for $221 :-)
I'll be fitting the new hard drive to my main PC and installing Windows 7 later. Should be fun... |
