Hard drive ticking Reply to this message
I bought a Dell 1537 Studio laptop last December and went online with it in April.
My IT man was here last week to replace a battery in my 7yr old Dell desk top and heard my laptop running. He advised me to contact Dell as my hard drive sounded unhealthy. He said it's normal for soft whirring and some ticking but not like this.
It makes loud ticking noises average 4-5 times a minute and when this happens at times I can lose any email I'm typing or a drop down menu drops and stops me from continuing until closed, the zoom % changes while reading a webpage and this morning the page froze and the ticking became constant until I closed the puter down. Also at times the puter seems to run slow.
I contacted Dell and spoke to a tech whose accent was hard to understand and he got me to carry out a function test which showed nothing (he said there's nothing wrong)but I am still stuck with the problem!!
Can any puter savvy person please tell me what is wrong? Anything I may have done?

Noise doesn't necessarily mean it is dying.

Hard drives can be noisy and still last for years, or they can die quickly and silently.

It MAY be nothing, but I would recommend you get an external USB hard-drive (they're cheap) and keep ALL your data backed up on it, just to be sure you don't lose anything if it DOES crash.

'Don't worry tarvie I am sure tivey the unemployed Microsoft cert111 will be here soon to advise you.'

And why shouldn't I?

BTW, my employment status is irrelevant here. Also, it's SUNDAY.

I bought a Dell 1537 Studio laptop

Sorry but my first question is why would anyone buy Dell in the first place.

Can you let me know the version of O/S etc and I'll ask onsite support on Monday and see what I can come up with

And so were mine the other day regarding your employment status. A long day without enough sleep, but that's not an excuse. My apologies

Apology accepted.

I shouldn't have bitten back, but it gets hard when you are doing the 'right' thing, but still cop the put-downs:-)

It looks like it's still under warranty so take it back and get another one....search for Dell repair dealers and take it to the nearest one and insist they replace the hard drive or get a replacement laptop

Your hard drive is dying.

Back up everything important - pictures, videos, music, docs, etc. etc. and replace the drive ASAP.

You'll have to reinstall Windows and all of your programs, of course.

Re:Hard drive ticking Reply to this message
The reason I bought another Dell is I have had no problems with the desktop I'm using and Studio 1537 came with 3 year freeMcFee Security, Yr 2-3 Ltd hardware warranty and parts exchange inhome service after remote diagnosis (4 different codes)
It came loaded with genuine Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit SPI edition and Windows Vista Premium Label and it has been running like this ever since I received it. I didn't know any different until last week.Another thing it has done is clunked a couple of times and advised to reboot Windows for no apparent reason.
Many thanks to everyone for your input. I will certainly backup all my files and I'll contact Dell again tomorrow, this time demanding they fix it or replace it.I'll even travel to Sydney to make sure they do.
Sorry if I sound a bit of a clutz- I am a 60+ g/mother who is definitely not IT savvy so any help given is gratefully appreciated.

Re:Hard drive ticking Reply to this message
you have waranty on a 7yr old dell?

anyway.. work with hundreds of the things..

HD ticking is bad.. one day it will simply stop working..

back up everything... and try to source a new drive either under warranty or buy one yourself..

Have no warranty with the7yo desktop but the battery is the only thing to go wrong with it in all this time. That's why I bought another Dell product. The deal I got when buying the laptop includes warranties and I will make sure they replace the hard drive or I get a new one puter (fingers crossed!!)

More problems now! The puter has started freezing and ticks frantically until I turn it off!!!

The Dell site is a horror to navigate but finally managed to connect to someone yesterday in Sales and was given a toll free 1800 number to use which I will put to good use.

Everything is backed up as has been suggested previously so here's hoping I get a good outcome today.

Re:Hard drive ticking Reply to this message
An update.

Spoke to a Dell tech a short time ago. He had me turn the puter off, take out the battery, hold the on/off button for 10 secs. Replace battery, Hold down function key while turning the laptop on and ran another scan. No problems showed but he said that the hard drive was not well, to back up everything and if the ticking returns they will replace the h/drive. He's made a note of this on my registration so hopefully there won't be any problems if replacement is needed.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply. Advice much appreciated.

RE:Hard drive ticking

your Hard drive is on the brink and wont last much longer, ive already had to install a new hard drive because of the same ticking issue.
I recommend you backup your hardive to disc, if that isnt possible save everything to a dvd disc or similar. before you lose everything.

Re:Hard drive ticking Reply to this message
I've spoken to three Dell IT people. The first said there was nothing wrong, the second said I needed a new hd and put a note to that effect on my service tag advising me to back up e/thing. After the puter started freezing then refused to eject a photo cd for almost 24 hrs (which it finally did to a very loud ringing noise) I rang again on Wednesday. The tech wanted me to take off the hd cover but I refused so now the resolution manager is ringing back on Monday when my local IT man is here and can understand what is being said and needs to be done. Apparently this won't affect my warranty. Of course it is a call centre in India? and the accents are hard to understand at least on my part. If it is established that it is the hd a tech will come and replace the old one this being one of the deals I recieved when I purchased the laptop.

What is really pinging me off is the puter has only been in use since April and 2mths of that time I've been away on holidays o/s so it was packed away. It's worth almost $3000 dollars and the damn hard drive is chucking it in already!!!!! I would expect that from my old desktop not from a brand new puter. I have backed up the important things so I don't care if it explodes now I've reached the end of my patience with it.

Oh well I'll see what Monday brings

Re:Hard drive ticking Reply to this message
Finally had the hard drive replaced and although all my files were backed up ready for transfer to the new replacement drive, when installed the files were there but nothing in them!! What went wrong??

Also when typing emails the cursor keeps jumping all over the message taking some of the words in a sentence with it and inserting them in the middle of previous lines typed or at the start of the message? Can this be fixed? So frustrating!!!
