| Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Howard castigated for his "cruel" trmt of boat people? Damned if the govt (of the day)does and damned if it doesn't. There's no easy answer is there as it appears that most of the boat people have come from dreadful and tortuous conditions. |

I was in Britain during the Tampa issue and everyone I knew, friends and family admired Australia's stance on asylum.
Don't believe that the media - often dominated by latte sipping liberals and p00fters - represent the everyday people on immigration and asylum. |

I think it is probably the other way around, it is not that all Liberals are racist but more that most racists are Liberal.
More specifically a high percentage red necks / racist types tend to be typically followers of some form of extreme right wing beliefs.

Sadly people are far too quick to judge people as racist these days.
My grandparents back in the 1950s were decent, hard working people, community minded and well respected. Yet they openly stated they didn't want "towelheads and blacks" coming to Britain.
That was the mode du jour, the B&B in a photo I have outside my grandmothers stated in the window "No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish" - the year was 1952.
Nobody labelled that "Racist".
Why on earth have we become so soft and touchy-feely on this issue?? |

What amazes me is this man commenting on immigration policy; the very policy that got him thrown out of government; a policy that during his administration of this; made most Australian’s ashamed to be Australian; and still trying to tell us he is right; delusional maybe arrogant for sure. |

Any time that you do not agree wholeheartedly with a person's religion, colour, background, where they come from and that they should stay where they were born, you can be deemed racist and I have met many dyed in the wool Labor supporters who are just as racist as the next person, politics does not enter into it. I have even heard Italians and Greeks at my workplace complaining about the new immigrants. |
