International Condemnation for Australia Reply to this message
THE Federal Government's tough stance on asylum seekers is attracting international media attention - most of it critical and likely to damage Australia's standing.

''Australia receives just a fraction each year of what the UN estimates to be more than 15 million refugees globally, but the issue has split the country,'' the BBC reported recently.

''Border protection, border security, is ingrained in the Australian psyche. From the 'reds under the bed' parodied paranoia of Robert Menzies' 1950s, successive governments of both mainstream persuasions have pandered to the politics of fear of invasion,'' the New Straits Times reported.

Shambles. The whole thing is an utter shambles and on this item he either appeals to my type of voter or the Left.

He is trying to please both and failing.

I want to see these people forcibly removed from the boat and not granted any type of claim whatsoever.

Strange though because during the Howard years anyone I spoke with in England about how asylum seekers were dealt with in Australia were always very positive and wished we did it in England.

Just goes to show the media don't always represent the views of everyday people.

Howards tough border protection policy worked. and the results when you look back prove it.

But go ahead Buzz, keep reaching, keep reaching and find something to deny it.

Because many Australians know better.

And will not listen to you or any other bleeding heart refugee advocate, Buzz

Published: November 4, 2009

New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/world/asia/05isl and.html

CHRISTMAS ISLAND, Australia — Deep in the jungle on this small island lost in the Indian Ocean, Australia’s new $370 million refugee detention center reaches its full power after its lights come on at dusk. Bracketed by rain forest, steep cliffs and the sea, it rises from the enveloping darkness and becomes visible from the island’s only inhabited corner, about 10 miles away.

The center — opened a few days before Christmas but now nearly full with refugees from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka — has come to symbolize what many call one of Australia’s defining fears: the arrival of boat people from Asia.

All boat people seeking asylum in Australia are first brought here to Christmas Island, just 220 miles south of Indonesia but nearly 1,000 miles from the Australian mainland, and most are now held at enormous cost within the center’s electrified, 13-foot-high razor-wire fences.

But even as boats arrive every few days, advocates for refugees and even the government’s own human rights commission are urging the government to close the place down and sort the asylum-seekers on the mainland. They compare Christmas Island to Guantánamo Bay or describe it as a reincarnation of the many notorious prison islands in Australia’s convict history.

They put this center way out here on this remote island, and then they built it way, way, way out on the island in the jungle,” said Charlene Thompson, a social worker who counsels asylum-seekers here. She equated the new center to Port Arthur, a 19th-century penal colony in Tasmania, Australia’s southernmost island. “It’s a jail, a high-security jail, and it feels like the asylum-seekers are being treated as criminals.”

The influx of boat people, which has swung elections in the past, has rattled the government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd a year before another election.

Just how big an idiot are you buzz. Thees slimy Tamils are owed nothing by Australia. They have no right to demand that they come here. Lets put a RAN crew on the Ocean viking and ship the garbage straight back to where they belong. If this idea incences you so much then feel free to join the trash.

I have some bad news for you Leftards, nobody outside of Australia really gives or cares a fk, they only see Australians as amiable drunken idiots.
Australian news, if any is mainly in the "oddly enough" section and rarely rises above the level of tourists being eaten by crocs and sharks.

And Rupert Murdoch agrees with me........

"Mr Murdoch said it was ridiculous for Australia to think it could lead the world in tackling climate change.

"I don't believe that Australia trying to be first in the world with cap and trade ... is going to have any influence on the rest of the world," he said.

"We don't matter that much - let's be honest with ourselves."

Re:International Condemnation for Austra ... Reply to this message
It was "delusional" and "absurd" to think that an Australian emissions trading scheme or an Australian policy was going to have this enormous impact on the deliberations of China and the US, Mr Turnbull told reporters in Geelong.

"I think Australia can play a very important part, but the idea that Australia or an Australian prime minister is going to be able to shift global opinion the way Mr Rudd seems to think ... If he genuinely believes that, he is deluded."

Mr Murdoch also told Sky News he doubted Australia needed so much stimulus spending.

"We were not about to collapse," he said.

"I thought we were trying to copy the rest of the world a little unnecessarily."

Re:International Condemnation for Austra ... Reply to this message
not sure where the BBC got the idea border protection in INGRAINED in our psyche...news to me...we happen to be in the middle of nowhere, should we really encourage people smugglers to put so called asylum seekers on rickety boats and send them into the unknown after receiving huge payments..is this the way we should go????..well! why didnt someone tell us...of course Britain doesnt have such a thing as border protection...they are just picking and choosing.. thats right...if I am supposed to be scared by the BBC report... well I for one am NOT.

what a pity they dont do a report on keeping these people in their own countries.. lets find a way....nah that makes too much sense doesnt it?

<<<THE Federal Government's tough stance on asylum seekers is attracting international media attention - most of it critical and likely to damage Australia's standing.>>>

Damage Australia's standing?

And how is this "standing" damage expressed?

Tourism?

Trade?

How much publicity and subsequent 'damage" is heaped upon say, Japan, for their stance on asylum seekers.

Do they have the slightest issue with trade or tourism as a result?

Why don't the people smugglers target Japan as a destination for their clients?

You know why as well as I do.

They're not a soft touch like Australia.

They have a government like that of Ben Chifley.....which, in the case of Japan ....looks after the Japanese.

Why have successive Australian government's ignored the interests of Australia and Australians?

We had a referendum on a 'Republic".

Why no referendum on Australia's migration policy, when Grasby changed the fundamentals of this forever?

Answer:

The Grasby politicians knew his policy foisted on us would be utterly defeated.

One of Australia's darkest political eras was under the rule of the Grasby Fascist Dictatorship when in government.....a Fascist Government being a government advocating an authoritarian domination of the people (as opposed to democratic government), so acting against the wishes of their nations people.

Australia is the world's third most generous nation in accepting refugees.

Of the world's 267 countries, 264 are less accommodating than Australia.

Why aren't these 264 countries being criticized?

Are they critisizing us?

Perhaps I'll continue below with more on the utter garbage of negative "international media" attention.

Re:International Condemnation for Austra ... Reply to this message
The OP news item goes on to say:

......................... ..

But the Government's handling of the crisis has won editorial support in Canada, which detained 76 Sri Lankan refugees who arrived by boat last month.

''Canada should emulate Australia in being vigilant and trying to intercept such ships before they get close to shore,'' said Canada's Globe and Mail.

......................

So should we listen to the Lefist propoganda publicity agencies....those that Joseph Goebbels would be impressed by.....such as the BBC?

From my discussions with relatives who are citizens of other nations, this utter BS of "international damage"...... regularly presented as an argument to assist the agenda of the Fascist Left Press Policy Propoganda Machine.... is never mentioned in any of their press.

Yep, that's right. The BBC and NY Times is obviously unaware of the fact these people on the Oceanic Viking have already been kicked out of Canada.

Poms and Sepos like to have a go at Australia becasue putting us down makes them feel good. The best response is to ingore their pointless accusations. If they want to take in lots of people smugglers and ex-Tamil Tiger soldiers, they are welcome to.

Re:International Condemnation for Austra ... Reply to this message
For refugees due to natural disasters, every country should help them based on the country's financial capability.

For refugees due to invation of a country to another country, the invading country should take the major responsibility. For example, the USA led invasion of Iraq leads to a huge amount of refugees and the two reasons for invation have proven not existing, hence USA has the main obligation to accomondate the refugees from Iraq, and Australia may also need to help as Australia is also one of the invading countries.
