Conservative dogmatists would have us believe that a quality universal health system is both inherently uneconomical and anti-capitalist...
On the contrary, quality universal preventative physical and mental health and dental programs are very cost-effective...
For obvious reasons, sick human units of economic production are less PRODUCTIVE - and more of an economic drain - than healthy ones... |

Is that so ? when in the last 40 years, the chinese have moved from a socialist/communist economy to a capitalist one and they are reaping the awards from it.
And Barrack Obama support is slipping because the majority of Americans realise that they dont want there country to move towards socialism altogether.
Because with common sense would know that socialism will always be a FAILURE, no matter how many times you bring it back. |

The communists were in last time I checked. Wonder if you believe everything youre told. Of course its in the capitalists interests to say that their model has made the Chinese boom. Yet the facts are that the Govt and State owned, that is socialist, banks, run the show. Its a mixed economy in parts and socialist for the rest. Really the Communists have done a very good job in China. The Communist system has taken them from a backward peasant nation to one of the world economic powers in just 60 years. No wonder they just had huge celebrations in Beijing. Their people are all clothed and fed unlike their neighbour India.
Under their system there is not the waste and casino capitalism that destroys so much wealth as we have just seen in the USA, Japan and the UK. Funny how the Communists are the only ones still doing well. As Stalin said "We will hang the capitalists and they will sell us the rope to do it with"
Really can anyone argue with that proposition at the moment? |

socialism is long since dead.
We inhabit a world where we are rewarded for our skills. We have a supply/demand system.
By the process of competitive advantage we gain the upper hand and will advance in life.
The 'society' is a make up on many individual competing goals and it is the strongest of these that achieves a position of strength and guides further advancement.
Long may people be awarded for personal achievement and long may the drop-out people not be rewarded. No place for laziness or free loaders in this world. |

Oh dream on astrolin, The Communist system didnt just take them to the top, they realised that a planned economy alone wouldnt help its vast population, they realised they needed to incorporate many of the features of capitalism in for it to compete with the West, otherwise the Chinese economy would have been going backwards under communism alone.
Russia is the evidence of that astrolin. |

| Many features of capitalism? The State Banks still run the show and the Govt still has heavy control over the economy. They only allowed firms to invest overseas in the last few years. Their workers do not consume they mostly save. Hence their vast amounts of reserves. The Govt fixes the currency rate, it is not floated. Pray what many features of capitalism do you refer to? |

And does it mean China doesn't have entrepeneurs ???,
I mean it started out as illegal under the communist system to engage in any range of entrepreneurial activities but that has changed and evolved into a open environment where many individuals engage in self-employment.
Now thats a feature of capitalism. |

Would it not be more accurate to say to the effect that: China has been smart and patient enough to play the arrogant 'now generations' of the West at their own game, by exploiting the inherent weaknesses in their global corporativist model...!? |

So your "many features" have been boiled down to "a feature."
Fixed currency, low consumption by the domestic workforce, state control over banks, restrictions on foreign investment, investment overseas by state owned corporations, authoritarian control of the TV and media, limited free enterprise media, state control of the internet and other communications, control of large swathes of manufacturing by the Peoples Liberation Army.
You'll need to do better than a feature, old boy. Many features of capitalism was your phrase. |
