Govt won't remove GST from tamp*** s Reply to this message
The federal government says it has no plans to remove the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from *** s, after a major supermarket chain announced it's cutting ten per cent from its prices on female hygiene products.

Coles supermarkets have decided to permanently remove the equivalent cost of the GST from the goods, saying they should be treated the same as basic food, education and medical services, that are exempt from the tax.

Labor campaigned to have female hygiene products exempt in 2000.

But assistant treasurer Nick Sherry says there are no plans to remove it now.

"The government has made a commitment to maintain the existing GST arrangements," he told AAP.

Basically, they blew it. Should have looked at another country nearby that had GST already (NZ) and followed their system. Load of rubbish how cooked chicken and raw chicken are different GST rates, who bloody cares anyway, we are being ripped off much worse by other shifty things like petrol having a GST of 10% and then other tarriffs and taxes so it ends up about 38%. What a load of bullshit.
I dont know very much about female products, but I think the GST couldnt be more than about 50 cents per pack. It would only be an empirical victory to get the GST removed, as they would be immediately slapped with a tarriff the second the tax is removed.

Menstruation is no more a medical condition than sweating is

What should follow ?
GST exempt deodorant ?

The lines on GST have been drawn, by the last government and Meg Lees

ANY tampering with it starts a wave of adjustments in other areas of taxation to compensate

"Menstruation is no more a medical condition than sweating is"

It's not a medical condition. But I wouldn't exactly put sanitary items in the same class as deoderant.

If you can't afford to buy deoderant, you smell a bit.

What happens if a woman can't afford to buy sanitary supplies?

What are they supposed to do? Wear a t-towel?

Sanitary items are a NECESSITY.

If sanitary items don't rate a GST exemption, then why are condoms exempt?

"dont even want to think of it."

Well, thanks to sanitary items, you don't have to.

Maybe women should protest by menstruating on the stairs of parliament house?

Well, even as a bloke with a fairly limited understanding of things, if you cant afford to buy sanitary products you'll surely smell a bit.

The exemptions were thrashed out by the baby-kissers, to try and please everybody and look like they know more than they do. My opinion, is that there should be a GST on everything, including condoms.

This is how they got an unpopular agenda through (how many millions did they give Joe C_o_c_k_ er for his song?), by tinkering around the edges to appease the independants.

GST on everything, and lose all the tarriffs and excises and other hidden taxes. Petrol would then be taxed at 10% not 38%. I dont know about you, but I spend a hell of a lot more money on petrol than deodorant/soap/toothpaste /medicine/condoms etc. all put together.

Because the help stop the spread of sexualy transnitted diseases, including HIV, and help prevent unwanted pregnancies

Despite the politicised comparison, here, condoms are not just 'a guy thing'

I supported the exemtion in 2000, but I see the arguement in not redrawing the lines on exemptions now

You don't reckon HIV or Hep B will be spread by contaminated menstrual blood being strewn about the environment?

WRONG

The legislation was passed in the House of Representitives (Government)

The Opposition backed the stand of oil companies and blocked the legislation in the Senate

What is the approximate amount that a man would save on condoms on account of condoms being exempt from GST.

It's not the amount. It's the bloody principle! (no pun intended)
