WHEN this newspaper endorsed Kevin Rudd's bid to become prime minister of Australia, we did not expect any favours or special consideration.
We believed John Howard's government had run its race and Mr Rudd and Labor had a fresh, imaginative and considered plan for the nation. We also believed that, along with Wayne Swan as treasurer, Mr Rudd would make sure the interests and concerns of Queensland and Queenslanders would have a prominent place on the national agenda. To a large extent, Mr Rudd and his Government have met these expectations.
Mr Rudd, meanwhile, has chosen to single out The Courier-Mail for particular criticism in recent days. His complaint rests on our coverage of allegations that the Prime Minister misled Parliament over whether he sought government assistance for his neighbour and used car dealer John Grant, who had given Mr Rudd a second-hand Mazda Bravo utility for electoral campaigning. Mr Rudd told ABC Radio on Tuesday that we based our reporting on "forged and faked emails". He then told a news conference in Darwin that we said on our front page "the Prime Minister of the country is corrupt". Neither of these statements stands the most cursory examination.
We covered stories relating directly to Mr Rudd's involvement in this affair over two days. The first day – which was before the alleged email had been referred to – we reported that serious claims would be made at a Senate committee hearing later that day, and that there was supposed to be a trail of correspondence that called into question Mr Rudd's statements to Parliament. We also quoted Mr Rudd's spokesman denying there was any such correspondence. |

One problem with Mr Rudd's protests of innocence before the facts were out is that his media office has a reputation for slippery weasel words and outright falsehoods. At least twice, Mr Rudd's media staff have told journalists that certain things were not true when they were accurate. When this newspaper questioned Mr Rudd's office about alleged abuse of an RAAF stewardess by the Prime Minister, we were told it never happened. It was later revealed it did and Mr Rudd apologised. Before the 2007 election, it was claimed Mr Rudd and his office were complicit in staging a pretend Anzac dawn service for a breakfast TV program. Mr Rudd's office denied the claim and demanded retractions and apologies from one of our sister News Limited newspapers. Mr Rudd's denials were soon proven to be hollow – this time through legitimate emails. No wonder journalists take what Mr Rudd's office says with a shaker of salt.
We stand by our reporting of these matters. Does Mr Rudd stand by all of the statements from his spokesman over the past 2½ years? |

JULIA Gillard defended her boss for a second time this week after he was accused of favouring frivolous media events over serious current affairs programs.
Using Twitter and appearing on lightweight entertainment shows doesn't mean Kevin Rudd is scared of hard-hitting interviews, his deputy said yesterday.
And both Ms Gillard and Mr Rudd yesterday repeated their call for a debate on media ethics in the wake of the Utegate scandal.
Appearing on Rove on Sunday night, Mr Rudd did discuss the fake email affair.
But most of the questions were trivial including whether he would consider using a Comfort Wipe, a type of bottom-wiping extender brush.
Former prime minister John Howard was reported as saying he had taken the view during his time in the top job that he had a responsibility to go on serious programs rather than FM radio stations.
But Ms Gillard said the accusations were baseless.
"I don't think anybody could credibly suggest that the Prime Minister doesn't make himself available for the tough questioning," she said. |

The Prime Minister produced one OK joke about emails that had viewers giggling at Turnbull's expense and made it into morning news bulletins.
For the most part, though, he was simply awkward, and comments in the blogosphere were largely unflattering.
"Kevin Rudd is the most boring person in the country," said one viewer. "Why put him on an entertainment show?" |

| Reading the article in today's Daily Telegraph, the whole thing about the fake email smells to high heaven. It is interesting to note that K-RUDD knew very soon afterwards that the thing was a fake. How come? I may not be conspiracy minded but it is too convenient that he had all the facts of the matter in such a short time. It also begs the question - where is the Treasurer? He has ducked for cover and has been notably absent in any media in relation to the matter. It is called COVER UP. Has he also shredded the evidence???? |

You seem to be coming quite disturbed about this
Malcolm urnbull has never denied seeing this email, and making a written copy of the text, with his meeting with Grech
BEFORE the Senate hearing, at which Eric Abetz read from HIS copy
