JUST after 5pm on Friday June 19, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's chief spin doctor Lachlan Harris appeared at my parliamentary office.
Barely 20 minutes earlier, I had sent Harris details of an email The Courier-Mail was planning to publish the next day.
Yes, that email. The now discredited email that is under Federal Police investigation-- and whose publication has contributed to the plunging fortunes of Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull.
Harris was civil despite the highly charged atmosphere. He challenged me to hand over the email, a request that I declined.
There was no mention of the email being a fake or an elaborate hoax. That denial of authenticity would emerge several hours later.

Something very odd about all this and it will come out Mr Rudd ...... |

We can't under estimate the gratitude of the electorate for the stimulus package, the apology, signing Kyoto, abolishing workchoices and others things that they percieve as either extremeley beneficial or at the very least doing no one no harm.
Rudd has also heavily engaged in the populist politics of attacking business, banks,Telstra,Su permarket chains and oil companies.
In reality apart from the a couple of $900 lots or so in the bank the average person is no better off.Once the stimulus dries up and there is a long list of broken promises,a huge debt things may change very quickly, subject to a strong opposition
Until they realize this Rudd can do what he likes including the utegate rubbish......... |

| Read the WHOLE artical you hack, not just what you want to believe about Rudd. It was a ( kind of ) explanation as to why News Ltd. papers ran with the story. You did notice they made a retraction in later editions, didn't you? |

you are not wrong simon..just the fact he doesnt want a full enquiry..spells it out in spades.
if you are lilly white, but someone had thrown mud at you.. wouldnt YOU be the one wanting an enquiry?? thats the way I look at it..
he would nail Turnbull, its his chance to prove that he MUST resign.. what an opportunity,
but he said NO..
WHY? |

NOT one of the hundreds of new houses promised in 2007 for remote communities as part of the Northern Territory intervention has been built.
A day after Kevin Rudd declared that indigenous disadvantage was worse than previously thought, The Weekend Australian can reveal that layers of bureaucracy are strangling a $700 million plan to address poor and overcrowded housing.
Indigenous leader and former Labor Party national president Warren Mundine yesterday agreed that not one house had been built under the intervention's housing crisis plan. He described the delays as "disgraceful and embarrassing". |

sorry matey but this whole thing has a very bad smell about it..I do not know which side it is coming from, but it isnt good.
I just hope the AFP dont take forever letting us know how anyone could FAKE an email from Treasury of all places.of all the computers in the world.. you would think theirs would be amongst the safest.. there has always been leaks in Canberra.. human nature..but by email!!....and a Fake email at that.I find that so hard to believe. |

If he had nothing to hide why does he want to sweep it under the carpet and not answer questions with the media. |

Bullshit. You've been listening to maclaren too long.
It is a police investigation, and within the law, no one can tell them what to investigate and what to leave alone. |

The Secretary of the Attorney General's Department has referred the matter of this alleged fake email to the Australian Federal Police.
The Department has advised Rudd that if "substantiated, a range of offences may have been committed against the Commonwealth Criminal Code 1995".
"I am advised that the Australian Federal Police Commissioner has agreed to commence an investigation," said Rudd.
"As the Australian Federal Police investigation relates to possible criminal offences, that investigation can operate concurrently and without duplicating the inquiry currently being conducted by the Auditor-General."

Turnbull asked Rudd to explain the evidence that came out from the hearing
Friday 19th - 4.40pm
Courier Mail sent Rudd's spin doctor "the email"...so this guy has seen the email content
Friday 19th - 5pm
Rudd's spin doctor demand to see the real email
Friday 19th - 7pm
Still no comment from Rudd
Friday 19th - 7.30pm
Denies the accusations
Saturday 20th - 9am (or there abouts)
Swan goes on record accusing Turnbull of seeing the email and based their accusation entirely on the email
Sunday 21st

are you lefties saying that you can't see Rudd trying to smear the LIBs despite the fact that they should answer questions about their involvement
up to date...has Swan answered any question about his involvement???
and the ONE thing that could push Swan and Rudd to answer a straight question is a Judicial Inquiry....
Judicial Inquiry....the one place Swan and Rudd could not lie or use weasel words
Judicial Inquiry....the one place Rudd and Swan would HAVE to given evidence under oath
Rudd and Swan ran a million miles away from the Judicial Inquiry
Rudd and Swan did not want a Judicial Inquiry
Rudd and Swan voted against a Judicial Inquiry
Until Rudd and Swan face a Judicial Inquiry...they will never be accountable for their actions

the smear Rudd and Swan orchestrate between Friday 19th 7.30pm and Sunday 21st was great spin
admittedly I admire the tactics
I admire the tactic even more when it convinced even melb_girl
I thought she is the most level headed person here yet she still fell for it...disappointing
but I did say that the evidence still sits there...it requires someone to look at it and act upon it
looks like Rudd has stirred the hornet's nest
if he kept his mouth shut then the Courier Mail would not need to go back over a timeline or any of the facts
it would have been easier
but now they have the bit between their teeth and Rudd will not like it

<<<Friday 19th - after the hearing

Rudd team seen text of email for the first time.

<<<Friday 19th - 5pm
Rudd's spin doctor demand to see the real email>>>
The technical people understandably requested the real email - this would make verifying or finding it a lot easier, it was not available.
************************* **********
<<<Friday 19th - 7.30pm
Denies the accusations>>>
Extremely quick time for a full search of the email/ archive system which confirmed that no such email was sent from the PM's office.
I would think it quite sensible for him to have confirmed that no such email was sent from his office before he denied it and to be able to do so within 3 hours is amazing.
************************* ************************* **
<<<Sunday 21st
Rudd goes on TV and demand that Turnbull should produce the email>>>
I would think that if the opposition leader is going to demand the resignation of the PM it is reasonable to assume that he has access to the evidence, Later Turnbull admitted that their was no evidence to suggest that the PM had lied to parliament.
The biggest mistake that Rudd made was that he said anything, he should have just shut up and let Turnbull dig himself in deeper and deeper, He could have got rid of Turnbull completely but possibly Labor recognise that Turnbull is their best chance to keep power for a few terms.

<<<then why call in the AFP?>>>
************************* *******
The wording of the email sent from the PM's office was known but they were aware that it was not sent from the PM's office.
The opposition had prior knowledge of this email and treasury officers were claiming that it was genuine.
At this point it would have been obvious that either lies had been told to the senate comittee and no email existed or that if it did exist it was a fake (fraud) maybe (or probably) both.
Without the independant investigation there is no doubt that the Liberals would still be claiming that the email was genuine.

how?
have they check every login and every email account?
I thought the AFP was supposed to do this!
so how would they know in such a short time that the email was a fake?

Grech only said that he saw an the email but did not act upon it because the Treasurer's Office had got onto him before he could do anything further (page E37)
