Mr Hockey claimed the BIS report showed that the automatic stimulus created when the budget slipped into deficit was more effective in Australia than in any other country except the US and Korea, meaning that less deliberate stimulus spending was required to keep the economy growing.
A spokesman for the Treasurer said Mr Hockey had misread the BIS data, which in fact showed the automatic stimulus to growth from a rising budget deficit was less effective in Australia than in most other advanced economies.
Mr Hockey conceded that his comments were in error, saying they were based on the incorrect interpretation of a graph.

| Here's the critique in a nutshell: Japan in the early 1990s, like the U.S. today, saw a real-estate bubble burst, spawning a banking and credit crisis that drove the whole economy down, hard. The Japanese then tried stimulating the economy with giant doses of government spending, which didn't pep things up -- but did bring on deficits that required tax increases later, dragging out Japan's problems for years. |

| Instead of huge spending on questionable infrastructure projects, as occurred in the 1990s, the plan would create a safety net for "nonregular" workers, the first to be laid off in the recession. It would also improve medical services, promote solar-powered industries and help strapped small businesses. |

THE number of Australians filing for bankruptcy and entering into other forms of debt agreements has increased in the past three months, compared with this time last year.
Figures published by the government agency Insolvency and Trustee Services Australia yesterday show the number of bankruptcies, debt agreements and Part X insolvency agreements between April and June rose 3 per cent, to 9437.
They also rose compared with the number reported between January and March. The figures reflect rising unemployment, difficulty meeting loan repayments on mortgages, credit cards and other personal debts, and business failures.
Bankruptcies, which usually make up about 75 per cent of all forms of insolvency, were flat in the three months to June, at 7014. The number of NSW residents filing for bankruptcy fell 9 per cent compared with last year, to 2532. NSW was still the nation's leader when it comes to bankruptcies, closely followed by Queensland and Victoria.
The number of Part X agreements, which are seen as preferable to bankruptcy, grew. There were 28 in NSW and 107 nationwide.

"This recession was nothing like the doomsday people were predicting."
Andrei,
Interest statement, but on what do you base that assumption, could it be like your following statement, just wishful thinking?
"Each person is born equal.
What value they become and what goals they attain is completely up to them."
Right now, I wouldn't hang my hat on any of the "experts", including the IMF, RBA, FED etc or even the BIS, who have at least been a little closer to reality.
Regrettably, there is a long way to go in this current event and I suspect you may be more than, somewhat, surprised by the outcomes. |

| Twice this week Mr Rudd has refused to answer direct questions about why he needed the use of a free ute and whether taxpayer-funded resources were inadequate to his purposes. In both instances, he responded to the questions by attacking the standards of political reporting in Australia. |

None of those Governments were lucky enough to have an economically sound predecessor just hand them a huge budget surplus.
--------------------
Howard actually left the budget in a structural deficit with his wastefull welfare spending. |

MORE than one in four young people cannot find a job or work for enough hours because the downturn is inflicting a particularly hefty toll on casual and part-time work, figures show.
A report published by the Bureau of Statistics yesterday showed one way in which the deteriorating jobs market wa *** ting young people hardest, by highlighting the growing pool of workers wanting more hours. |

Ll you dunnie; i didn't even think you could be that stupid to even come near a post by me about the budget being in a structral deficit in it!
When i previously mentioned that Howard left the budget in a structural deficit, you came back with a post stating you had never heard of this "structural deficit" i spoke of; then i see you in another thread a few minutes later attempting and failing terribly to sound smart by asking the non-brain dead liberal supporters like yourself, if they where so smart they should be able to tell you what a structural deficit was!!
Here it is chump, go back to the very thread when i first mentioned the Howard governmtn structural deficit, see the article i post to own you then, and then get back to me chump ok? |

Actually Andre, according to this report, it has so far been exactly like one doomsday person has predicted.

Many, many of us are continuing to lose our jobs.
I, myself, found myself redundant as a result of the economic downturn and global market - how then is the economy beating the odds??
Tell that to those of us losing our jobs, wondering how we will pay the mortgage, wondering about the economic future for us all?
It's a bad time for so many of us and this Government seems incapable of dealing with the problem. |

The Government has a role yes.
And I have taken a redundancy yes. Basically the economic factors in Australia, workplace relations and labour cost made it impossible for me to support manufacturing divisions remaining in Australia.
As a result, I too have taken a redundancy as a result of both the downturn and uncompetitive Australian workforce divisions.
I find honour in being able to look the guys in the eye who have lost their roles as a result of strategic decisions I helped make, in that I too decided my role was not supportable in Australia.
Sometimes honour is a value to hold. |

"huge budget surplus"
20 Billion out of an estimate 370 BILLION from the "resources boom" (over a 5 yr period) is NOT what I would call "HUGE"... |

"round 2...ding ding"
Ned,
You already know, but for the others, this is a "title fight", so there will be 15 rounds.
For anyone that has a problem with that, it simply means that this event (economic downturn) has a long way to go. |
