KEVIN Rudd has called for a public debate on journalistic ethics, rounding on several News Limited publications over reporting of the OzCar affair.
The Prime Minister has also criticised The Australian, published by News Limited, accusing it of conducting a vendetta against Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard because she complained about the accuracy of its reporting of his government's spending program on schools.
Last month, Mr Rudd faced opposition calls that he resign after public servant Godwin Grech said he remembered having seen an email from Mr Rudd's office ordering him to give assistance to car dealer John Grant, who gives Mr Rudd free use of a utility vehicle for campaigning in his Brisbane electorate.
Mr Grant was seeking help through the government's $2billion OzCar fund, established to help car dealers survive the credit crunch caused by the global recession.
While Mr Grech said he did not have a copy of the email, three News Limited publications -- Sydney's The Daily Telegraph, Adelaide's The Advertiser and Brisbane's The Courier-Mail -- ran reports about the existence of an email. It later transpired that the email was a forgery.
At a news conference in Darwin yesterday, The Australian asked Mr Rudd why he needed a free ute considering taxpayers already funded a vehicle for MPs.
Mr Rudd said he had declared the vehicle on his pecuniary interest register, and he launched an attack on the newspapers, saying they had accused him of corruption without their editor having seen a copy of the purported email.
"I would have thought a few people would want to know how all of that happened -- what sort of journalistic checks were put in place," Mr Rudd said. |

On Wednesday, News Limited chief executive John Hartigan told the National Press Club he was satisfied with the reporting because Mr Rudd's press conference on the evening of the claims being made, in which he declared his belief that the email was a fake, came too late to make first editions of the newspapers. But his comments had been carried in later editions.
Mr Hartigan also linked Ms Gillard's criticism of the reporting of the OzCar affair to the fact that The Australian had reported claims of wastage under the Building the Education Revolution scheme, which involved the rapid rollout of spending on schools to boost economic activity in the the recession.
Mr Rudd said yesterday The Australian had conducted "a good, old-fashioned exercise in journalistic retaliation" last month after Ms Gillard used parliament to highlight inaccuracies in its reporting.
"I think on these sort of things, and given your question is about transparency, it's good that we have a general discussion about these things," Mr Rudd said. |

well said simon I will never forget Pembertons editorial in the DT the last days befor the Election...what a turn around... he was all over Rudd like a rash.most of the journos have very left leanings to my mind...not all but most..so he gets pretty much a fairer go than Howard ever did..and now!... oh boo hoo..someone said something, and its not a nice something...boo.hoo.. get used to it you wimp. |

The ONLY news I take any notice of regarding politicians is an un-edited interview
Or from question time in the Parliament
Anything else can be skewed to suit the political agenda of the media source

Last night, the AFP refused to confirm that Mr Turnbull had been formally cleared of any criminal misconduct.
The police chief's comments followed government accusations that Mr Turnbull was "intimately involved" in the matter. |

They are still collating his and information from other sources and interviews, as well as continuing the investigation
