Is anyone else stunned by the lefty ability to confuse and misunderstand the SIMPLEST concept ?.

Everything, it seems, has to be explained to them with the utmost patience. Their minds are like silly little trains that constantly need putting back on their tracks.

path, studies show that many that take up smoking are doing it well before 18.

I dont think this is so much about raising revenue. If you just said "you cant smoke in a car with kids" without some form of penalty, do you think people would follow it?

This is a good initiative. Something had to be done, and there is something pretty disturbing when you see a poor kid in a car with a smokers cough because Mummy is enjoying her smoke.

'This legslation is about protecting children, not about stripping the rights away from people.'

Rubbish!

That's precisely what it is.

Plus, a blatant money-grab in the form of fines.

Feck 'em.

I will do as I please in MY car.

Personally I think they should ban the disgusting habit. There'd be a lot of pissed off people for a couple of weeks, but they'd get over it.

Surely the revenue generated would be far and away offset by the cost to the health system.

You'd get no arguements from me, but then the blackmarket trade would flourish, and you still have the problem, with no associated revenue.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++

Unless the penalty included a maximum jail term of 25 years it won't stop anyone.

You can't fix stupid; people know the risks; if they continue to subject their children to the effects of passive smoking knowing fully the consequences; no law will stop them.

I heard it here I think but If not it should be repeated; we hae to many laws that protect people from natural selection.

Re:Abbott slams 'trivial' smoking ban Reply to this message
Well many say the NWO is a crock of sh1t, but these socialist rules are getting worse and worse, what next, permits for exhaling? ah that right CO2 emissions we are already trying to implement that as well.
If smoking was such an issue why is it legal to smoke? Why is it ok for governments to profit from smokers? Governments collecting profits from smokers is just as bad as a drug dealers collecting profits from drug addicts. So what happens if I don’t pay a fine for smoking in a car? Gaol?
This is an outrage and people will needs to start forming rebellions against this type of tyranny that has taken control of our country and our lives. We have more rules then any place in the world that control our lives. This is not Freedom!!
Its getting to the point that people might need to start taking up arms against our Governments and take back our freedom.

The professional who had actually studied the matter interviewed by the ABC this morning said that the level of toxins that children exposed to smoke from 2 or more cigarettes in a car are well above the maximumu level recommended by the EPA.

Either way, anyone who insists on smoking in a car with their kids is an unfit parent period.

I get exactly what you are saying, but this isnt about protecting the stupid parents that act irresponsibly.

I agree, you cant save people from themselves, but you should be able to save them from the acts of others.

Re:Abbott slams 'trivial' smoking ban Reply to this message
There was an old lady bashed to death by an aborigine a few weeks back. The police never caught the guy, and most likely never will. A day or two later, I counted 5 speed cameras in around 50 km of road, each with an officer in the back reading the paper.

Its not the fault of the individual officers, they are doing what has been allocated for them to do, raising money.

I disagree with smoking in cars with kids, but I would like them to have more time to investigate serious crimes.

I don't have kids, and the only drug I take are cigarettes. but if I am stuck looking after someone else's kid and I need to drive some place and feel the need to smoke I will.
the M5 Tunnel is more of a health risk then passive smoking. Unleaded fuel is more of a health risk then passive smoking. commercial car parks are more of a health risk then passive smoking.

Simple. Don't smoke in the car with your kids and you won't get fined. Better yet, don't smoke at all and you'll have even more money to buy food for the darlings.

Re:Abbott slams 'trivial' smoking ban Reply to this message
Incorrect. Burning vegetation is easily demonstrated as being around 20 000 times as harmfull as exhaust gasses. You will have to find a smokey old 2 stroke without a cat converter to even register a comparison. Some of the NOX components are particularly nasty, such as heterocyclic nitrogen compounds. Taking tobacco smoke straight into the lungs is a very effective method of delivery of these toxic substances. Diesel engines release damaging particulate matter, specially around the 10 micron size.

Being a non smoker I know first hand how uncomfortable being in a smokers car can be but we're becoming a nanny country, where's all going to end, we're becoming a bunch of robots that are being controled by the supreme leader.

I am an ex-smoker and I find that this not smoking here there and everywhere situation, is completely and utterly ridiculous

How can you possibly tell people where and when they can't smoke, if what they are doing is legal?

I saw an interview yesterday and the man said thta he had nevr seen such a "nanny" country, not being able to smoke wherever you want to

Luckily she lives in Denmark and only visits once a blue moon.

Re:Abbott slams 'trivial' smoking ban Reply to this message
The comment from Abbott was irresponsible and simply stupid. When it comes to childrens' health I'm all for the ban.
As for smoking, everyone of legal age has a right to smoke, but they have no right to let their smoking interfere with others. Smokers always come up with the old chestnuts, other pollution is worse, been smoking for 40 years and nothing wrong with me, we have rights etc, etc.
What they don't consider is the discomfort to people in their vicinity. I ask smokers would you like me to be near you with a bad case of flatulence and couldn't care less?

No different to breastfeeding, urinating, copulating etc in public, you don't have the right to enforce your beliefs on those around you.

Personally I just see the law pointless and unworkable, it will tie to much resources for what's non essential enforcement. I'd much sooner see them attack drink drivers.

oh god aussie I couldnt agree more... I asked a very hard question once that caused a huge outcry...and when I said I put a long line of question marks after it...someone said that doesnt make it a question?????????. so I am on your side. it is only ever the left that questions a question...

back to the smoking ban ... I do wonder who is going to police it.. will it be the police that should be stopping the driveby shootings.. or the brick throwers that are trying to kill people on buses or in cars..and not forgetting the violence that hits the streets every Friday and Sat night... when the braindead come out to celebrate.. I am sure we have enough police left over to stop randem cars to see if anyone is smoking... and if anyone has kids in their car..like Tony Abbott we both smoked in our car..with our kids.. we didnt know any better.. smoking wasnt a crime in those days... now we are educated, I dont smoke anymore and only my son does in my family.why a car should be any different to a lounge room I am not sure.will we have house invasions down the track??..will dad be allowed to smoke in the shed..

smoking is not a good thing.. but then neither is drinking....will they make it a double crime for anyone that drinks and drives with kids in the car?...what about someone with a health problem.. like heart trouble.. do you think they should have kids in the car???.

I agree with Abbott surely this govt has got bigger things to legislate about. it gives me heartburn just to read what some idiot gets paid to come up with..
how about hiding the smokes for starters.under the counter, we cant advertise them but they are there for all to see

Take out breastfeeding and copulating. Urine along with smoke, faeces and methane are all in the same category, waste product.

you have basically answered your own question....Abbott isnt stupid just practical...some parents dont feed their kids.we have legislation regarding that....does it stop it happening????if you had a bad case of what you suggested.. and had your kids in the car... would you like a cop to pull you over because the kids are gasping for air?????

They are all in the same category, a natural process, but I don't want to witness any of them.
