Former Queensland government minister Gordon Nuttall lied during an investigation hearing when he said he did not benefit from a series of payments from a mining executive, a court has been told.
Nuttall told the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) hearing in September 2006 that money received from mining magnate Ken Talbot had helped only his children, the Brisbane District Court was told on Monday.
Nuttall is currently on trial over allegations he received $300,000 in secret commissions from Mr Talbot between 2002 and 2005.
The 56-year-old has pleaded not guilty to 35 counts of receiving corrupt payments.
He also has pleaded not guilty to an additional count of receiving a corrupt payment, relating to a one-off $60,000 transaction from senior public servant Harold Shand in April 2002.
The court was told Nuttall gave evidence to the CMC hearing that he had entered into a "private arrangement" with Mr Talbot, whereby the founder of Macarthur Coal would give him $300,000 in the form of monthly payments over a three-year period.
When asked what he would receive from the arrangement, he said "nothing", and that it had been obtained to help pay off property for his children.
Crown prosecutor Ross Martin SC on Monday told the jury this was a lie and that Nuttall had actually obtained substantial benefits from the payments. |

Evidence of this ALP minister sat in Crime and Misconduct Commission since 2007
and the findings are starting to come out
the same way the evidence against Swan and Rudd sits with the Senate Committee
it will be investigated and Rudd does not want this investigation or any investigation to go on
WHY?

note that the CMC was held as a "hearing"
so was the Senate Committee where the evidence are currently being held against Swan and Rudd
these evidences have been given under oath
any lies will be investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law

Mr Martin said Nuttall never declared the payments from Mr Shand or Mr Talbot under parliament's register of pecuniary interests, nor did he declare a conflict of interest.
