Nelson makes pitch to boost leadership
By AAP
Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has made a populist pitch on petrol in an attempt to shore up his leadership, calling for a five cent cut in the fuel excise.
Dr Nelson's excise cut - which would cost $1.8 billion - was long opposed by former prime minister John Howard.
The opposition leader challenged the government to cut petrol tax but stopped short of committing the opposition to introducing its own draft laws in the Senate - which it will control until June 30.
"There is only one way that an Australian government can actually do anything decisive about the price of petrol - and that is to cut taxes," Dr Nelson told parliament in his budget in reply speech on Thursday night.
Labor scorned the excise proposal, saying the coalition had lost all economic credibility.

The Rudd government questioned why the coalition was now proposing a five cent cut in the petrol excise when they not done so during 11 years in government.
"Twenty weeks ago, Dr Nelson and Mr Turnbull were members of a government, a government which had the opportunity to do something about petrol prices," Assistant Treasurer Chris Bowen told reporters.
"(Now) they decide petrol prices are an issue."
The coalition will use its Senate numbers to reverse an increased excise on ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages, expected to bring in $50 million a month.
And it will try to stop the government from increasing the annual income threshold for the Medicare levy surcharge to $100,000, which it claims will push up the cost of private health insurance. |

I don't think he needs to say anything.
Labor will drive all the clowns who voted for them away in this next couple of years.
We're being driven to thinking of moving back to Europe for a while already and they haven't been in for a year! |

A little like a Woolie's shopper-docket deal. Just spend your vote here at the Liberal Party to receive five cents per litre off at the bowser. |

"The problem with reducing the taxes on fuel while the price is high, is that it's very hard to increase them back to normal levels when the price comes back down again."

I'm not massively pro Liberal but why anyone would vote in the socialist tax and spend lot we have now is beyond me.
We have a very anti-middle income party right now and it will hurt this country badly |

Interesting 'teaser' from the good doc.
The realities are that in Govt, the good doc did actually side with the petrol lobby and lil johnnie to leave the petrol excise as IT WAS. As in NOT to reduce them. |

What has the Rudd Government done?
Oh, he read out a sorry speech.
He jetted around the world to pointless conferences.
And errr, interest rates have shot through the roof, the banks are now hiking them up at will whilst our Treasurer actually pleads with them not to (which of course they ignore because he has no credibility).
Great going Kev, more years of this to come.
You voted this lot in Australia, good going! |

Vicious when cornered. How else do you explain the PM's behaviour over petrol? First he breaks his promise that petrol prices will not rise as a result of the GST. He short-changes motorists by 1.5 cents a litre and runs around saying he hasn't.
The pressure shifts to the next automatic indexation of the petrol excise on February 1. Backbenchers demand a freeze of that one as a one off. No way, fiscally irresponsible, we'll give you big bucks for roads instead.
Labor puts up a private members bill to freeze the February 1 excise hike retrospectively, on the grounds that this will fix Howard's broken GST promise. No way. Fiscally irresponsible. We're just implementing Labor's legislation providing for automatic indexation, passed in 1983.
Then Western Australia and Queensland and next month, the incredibly important byelection for the blue ribbon Liberal seat of Ryan, which if lost will destroy Howard's leadership.
He gives back the 1.5 cents a litre he filched last year, which if he hadn't would have killed the issue before it caught fire AND promises immediate legislation to abolish automatic indexation forever. In question time, Howard and Costello crow that only they had the guts to abolish Labor's rort on taxpayers.
The figures are frightening AFTER THE ELECTION. The measure will cost $140 million this financial year, $555 million the next, $815 million the next, and $1.1 billion the next. |

This of course automatically means that all Labor politicians are corrupt. Oh - hang on - what about Peter Reith's son, and the phonecard scandal? Wasn't Reith a Liberal minister at the time? |

I'm not prepared to give these Union stooges any time at all.
I saw right through them from the election.
Problem is we have compulsory voting so a whole heap of bogans who don't have a clue end up voting out one of the most successful Governments who brought us unrivalled prosperity.
Now I am going to be hit with additional tax and closure of any kind of loophole. |
