Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised to consult with disability groups to make sure parents of disabled children are not hit by the budget rise in the luxury car tax.
The government plans to raise $555 million over the next four years by lifting the tax on luxury cars from 25 per cent to 33 per cent.
Family groups have complained that because the tax applies to vehicles worth more than $57,000, it will catch people movers like Tarago vans, used by large families or those who need to transport wheelchairs.
Opposition finance spokesman Peter Dutton asked Mr Rudd how he could justify hitting families with
disabled children with the tax.
Mr Rudd later told parliament that there was already a range of exemptions from the tax to avoid hurting people with disabilities.
"We will therefore be consulting closely with disability groups in drafting our legislation to ensure that there are no unintended consequences for those suffering from disabilities," he said. |

The LCT is now being called the Tarago tax bcause it is supposed to be impacting on the price of "people movers"
Interestingly, if we look at the price of taragos's at Toyota's site we find that the 4 cylinder Tarago GLI, is uneffected by the tax, as is the 4 cylinder Tarago GLX as is teh 6 cylinder Tarago GLI as is the 6 cyclinder Tarago GLX described on their site with the phrase "New levels of LUXURY".
Even the 6 cyclinder Tarago V6 Ultima, described with the phrase "Travel Business Class" will experience an increase in price of a mere 1.7%!

>>> "We will therefore be consulting closely with disability groups in drafting our legislation to ensure that there are no unintended consequences for those suffering from disabilities," he said.' <<<
Which means " we will form a consultative committee to study the possible consequences, then form a committee to draw up a plan to assess the said consequences, then form aanother committee, or maybe even have a summit to devise ways to overcome these consequences and by the time we are sacked the need to do anything will have passed." |
