I disagree. If you do that, then you should increase the age that you can drive to 21 and well, while you're at it, why not increase the age at which you can join the armed forces at 21.
If you are old enough to die for your country, then you are damn well old enough to legally drink alcohol. |

| well ws0373,i think it is ok to be over 18 to join the armed forces and to drive a car.but with drinking needed to push up the age limit over 21 and do it very soon not later soon.. |

The problem is caused by a few idiots binge drinking.
There needs to be serious criminal consequences for anyone
found drunk in the street - so drunk they can't even
stand up or drunk & causing a gross public nuisance.
Put these people in jail where they belong.
The propblem is lack of law & order.
When I go out at night there always drunks in the streets
making abusive comments to anyone passing by.
Lock them up! |

I'm with ricky on this one.
Brain only fully matures around age 25.
Driving cars and joining army causes no brain damage (at least former to a much lesser degree than the latter).
Alcohol, however, does.
It drains the brain of vitamin B1, and if it drains it out too much, can provoke Korsakoff syndrome.
Brains that have not fully completed their development do not need any deduction of any of the B vitamins, especially in today's conditions where nutrition is notoriously low on them.
Alcohol is also devastating for the liver, hence for the immune system.
Some individuals cannot tolerate it, at all.
Alcohol is seen as benign because SOME people can tolerate it better than others, because it's legal, and because it's been part of our culture forever.
But the truth is: alcohol is just as damaging to our health as any illegal drug you can think of.
(I actually wouldn't mind shifting the legal drinking age to 25 - because of the brain.) |

| Well that explains alot checks in for ct scan, anyhow, I am from the states where it is 21 but truthfully I drank more before I was old enough too, more of the getting away with things sort of thing, not to say I didnt have probs when I came of age, I just eventually gave up drinking as I am one that can't handle it I don't pass out, I black out, and just keep drinking, not a pretty sight. I wish they would switch their attention to drinkers instead of smokers though these smoking bans are really becoming a pain for us smokers :p |

| Earlier closing of licensed premises may be a better solution. Some remain open till 2am, 3am or even later and are very popular with the young. These unnecessary opening times just encourage young people to keep drinking well past the point of intoxication. Just look at the incidence of alcohol related violence that occurs in the wee small hours of each morning. Earlier closing times would cut access to alcohol and stop its abuse. Who really needs a drink at 3 in the morning? |

we now know that alcohol damages a fetus...what does it damage...the brain....
we have to stop pretending alcohol isnt a problem..
we kill each other outside the pubs and clubs
we kill each other by driving over the limit
we go home and cause mayheem in the family circle
we rob, we cheat, we bash, we kill, all in the name of alcohol.
yes raise the age limit and make all alcoholic drinks weaker.... |

IN THE REAL WORLD. They get as many drinks in as they can before they even go out - its cheaper that way. Closing time is irrelevent.
What I propose is ban everyone over 50 from drinking. |

Who needs a drink at 3 in the morning?
I will if I am out & want one.
Binge drinking is the new "IT" word in the media, binge drinking has always been around, it was around when pubs closed at 10 it is still around now.
Pubs close at 10 you just skull more drinks before closing, you leave home earlier to get the drinks in, then you buy the roadies for on the way home & when you get there.
Don't put all young poeople in the same basket, it is the minority of them that are giving them a bad name not the majority.
Get of their backs, any one would think that you all were never young. |

A Couple of points to be made here:
First up, making the limit 21 instead of 18 is only to make the problem worse. Look at Schoolies week in QLD. most of them are under 18 and almost have a gold pass to the liquor cabinet. Let's face it, if someone is old enough to drive, have sex, join the Defence forces... then why not a drink also (plus any cp!). There is a problem (always has been - I first got drunk at 8yo and was pulling beers at 10), and it is partly parental and partly social.
Next up, as a former hospitality worker I'd regularly finish work at 3 or 4 am (having started at 8pm or so). The activity cycle is all screwed up. You ask who needs to have a drink at that time? I don't drink alcohol anymore but I still felt the need to get out and have a nice cold relaxing drink afterward. |

Here here theeeldrguy, people look at us strange when we are walking in the pub at 10am of a Friday, but due to shift work I choose to work nights so to be in the pub at 10am is not so strange, work hours are not as they were, most people worked 9-5 now we have alot different shifts just cause you are having a drink at a different time to most, you shouldn't be punished.
You are right not everyone goes to theese places to get drunk, most people know how to be social |
