Looks like the libs are against increasing tax on alcopops. Still greater profits for big business is more important than stopping the problem of teenage drinking isn't it Libs?

| Its not just teenagers that drink. Personally I prefer 'alcopops' and I am ancient. Wouldn't drink beer or wine if you paid me to. And yes I take my own drinks to weddings. |

The 2 important questions here are.......
A. Why did the disgraced Howard Government remove this tax in the first place ?
(NB: This is a RESTORED tax, not a NEW one)
B. What is the total amount of donations received by the Liberal Party from the alcohol industry ?
United Distillers Limited (UDL) in particular
. |

Correct , If they really want to tackle binge drinking Cask wine (or Battery acid as the Aborigines call it) is by far the cheapest way to get drunk & that is the drink odf choice by most alcoholics , not Alcopop !!! |

| I don't believe taxing things to make them naughtyworks anyway , how about education instead , Oh I forgot they can make any revenue through tax from that .. |

Equally prove it does have any effect , on the contrary I think by making it a bit naughty could even make it worse.. |

| If teens really want to binge drink...or I want to binge drink...I can easily get a bottle of vodka and a bottle of red cordial for less than the alco-pops and still get smashed! |

Which is taxed at the same rate as 'alcopops' are NOW
Previosly they were taxed at a LOWER rate than the neat spirit on the alcohol content

<<greeniebopper: Proof?>>
The burden of proof goes both ways, but considering the treasury has factored in an increase in revenue from this new tax prove to me it's not.
If they where serious about the issue, how about actually doing something about enforcing current legislation (and yes, that would take more police resources so how about boosting the police force ) and educating not only so called teenage binge drinkers but also the parents that seem to not have a clue what they're kids are doing or if they do, not being able to deal with it. |

I personally believe it will make no difference whatsoever to binge drinking , teenagers are pretty rescourceful & they will get around it easily with Cask wine , Mixing their own , drinking straight Vodka (even worse) .. |

But you are talking education here , clearly the best way to stop binge drinking maybe with a follow up advertising campaign , but the problem there is the Govt can't make any Tax revenue out of that !! |

The main social problem is violence at pubs and nightclubs etc.
I doubt many venues would allow patrons to mix their own or drink from a goony. No money in that.
I'd like to see the licensing laws policed more rigorously. The venues would soon police it if their licence was on the line. |

The statistics cannot be denied
The fact remains the sales of these drinks increased by around 60% in the market place after the Howard Government reduced the tax on them in 2000, in the young female demographic in particular
Counter price WAS a deterrent, and WILL be again

Tell that to drug users the street price of drugs has little deterrent , I am an avid non smoker & see cigarettes at $13 a packet & yet you see lots of unemployed, low income , teenagers & other people on low income smoking , hasn't stopped them.
Sorry we will have to agree to dicsagree.. |
