Labor's honeymoon is now over! Reply to this message
For the last six months, Wayne Swan has had the opportunity of getting away with blaming the Coalition government for inflation, rising costs, and anything else.

Swan did this as an excuse for his inaction, over the last six months, in not being able to control rising prices and interest rates, which he and Rudd promised, before the last election, they would do.

Peter Costello was facing the same global pressures that we have today... but Rudd and Swan conveniently accused the Coalition of simply mismanaging the economy, rather than accepting the fact that global pressures were at play.

Well... hasn't Swan now changed his tune! The pressures on the economy... like inflation, interest rate rises, etc .... surprise surprise, are all due to global factors!

Last night, Swan delivered his budget. From today, he can no longer blame the Coalition. The responsibility to manage the economy is now his... the government is already 6 months in office, and from today, all the whinging about the economy now rests on Swan's head.

Labor's honeymoon is now over. From today, Labor is in total control and must now cop all the flak!

'Labor's honeymoon is now over!'
-===========
Not with the ABC & Laurie Oakes , Michelle Grattan , Ramsey & the Canberra Press crew , although I believe no polititian from any side (although a Lib supporter) should have honeymoon periods , they should hold politicians accountable , unfortunately the ABC seems to be a breeding ground for future Labor politicians , like Carpeneter WA Premiere , Maxine McKew & Mary Delahuntley was an underachievind state (Vic) Minister for Education.

They'll be blaming the Howard goverment for everything for the entire term of their government. Thats what happened last time they were in power. It will be great to see the look on the faces of Labour votes in about 6-12 months time when they realised what they have voted for.

Don't they realise that how many people in Australia earn over 150k pa and are now offended? don't they realize Australian care about their own backyard, not Iran and Israel? http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/05/14/2244 180.htm

Australians don't want to hear "jobs must go" http://au.news.yahoo.com/080513/21/16ui0.html
and at the same time increase immigration?

And now the lies and broken promises are surfacing:

Means test backflip

Mr Rudd has conceded that the new means test for family payments is set at $100,000 less than Labor promised before the election.

Last night's Budget axed the baby bonus and Family Tax Benefit B for families earning more than $150,000 a year.

Before the election, Labor said the Family Benefit B means test would be set at $250,000 a year.

Mr Rudd told Fairfax Radio the Government changed its mind.

Does anyone happen to remember a campaigning Mr Rudd stating that in a lot of cities, $100,000 was not a lot of money. It's actually two people working pretty average jobs.
Now he seems to think that this is "rich" and thus ineligible for a lot of things like energy rebates. Thanks Mr Rudd you've now made it impossible for us to afford to "go green" with solar energy which was our plan for next fin year.

I would also suggest that if $100,000 is so incredibly rich, let's cut all their salaries to that. See how that goes.

Government 'honeymoons' last a few months
Labor's popularity record approval at the moment is an endorsement and recognition of good government

A unanimous view is held by business groups, economic ana1ysts, the media, unions and the electorate alike

The next Newspoll will show little variance from the last one

I'll repost waht I wrote in the Bob Hawke thread yesterday chickenlips when you first tried to pass off the "core-non-core" promise as a Labor party invention;

"And the deliberate changing of history begins.

As you well know chickenlips , it was the LIBERAL party under Howard who used the words "core promise" and "non-core" promise to explain why they were breaking their promises.

Black is white . War is peace.

Your Orwellian attempt to convince people it was the Labor party who said this is laughable."

As you clearly have NO IDEA of the polling methods used by Newspoll, Galaxy Research and AC Nielson, I suggest you do a little research on their web-sites

The first Swan Budget is not one that would set the house on fire.
But it is reasonable budget that makes an attempt to reel in Inflation.
And also better target spending
It has been welcomed by core Australian Business leaders.
It also reigns in the excessess of tax breaks and handouts of the last years of Howard and his Government
Of course you cannot please everybody particully those who will loose Tax perks, Tax breaks and having to pay a bit more for the Beamer.

Of course we have seen the pretend wealthy whinning about loosing the Baby Bonus.
That all part of reigning in inflation if you havn't got in you cannot spend it.
I feel the retired can say they were left out but it is early days yet two more Budgets before elections are due.
And if inflation is controlled the retired will breath a little easier

for those of you that are happy about the budget tell me what if you are one of the 60000 put out of work how would you then feel about it

would you still say it was a good budget
could you survive
could you still maintain the same standard of living

I dont reckon any of you people that are now fawning over rudd and swan and telling all and sundry how good they are would still have the same opinion then would you??

But then again you seem to think that the sun shine from big kevs a#s so perhaps you are more deluded than i thought

------------------------- -----------------

Singles earning between $50,000 to $100,000 get a 1% cut in their income tax cut;

Self funded retirees get their super income tax free after 60, plus also can get upto $72,992 in non-superannuation income tax free, plus access to the LITO of $1200 per year.

That is self funded retirees can unlimited tax free income from super, plus upto just over $72,000 in non-super tax free income, plus a $1200 per year government thankyou-what more should they get?

......................... ...............

dear me , why they scaled it to $150,000 was because to buy a house in sydney a couple needed an income of $120,000pa so they picked the figure $150,000 as a figure of higher income so it went from $250,000 down to $150,000 to stop wealthy people getting welfare that they didn't or should get!!!!!!!

jason... when Costello reformed the superannuation rules last year, he ensured EVERYONE will get their pension tax-free, not just self-funded retirees.

jason, only if super benefits are paid before age 60. Most people retire at 60 or 65.

From 01/07/07, all lump sum benefits payments paid from a taxed source (e.g. superannuation fund) to an individual aged 60 or over will be tax free when paid.

From 01/07/07 all pension payments from a taxed source (e.g. superannuation fund) will be tax free when paid to individuals aged 60 or over, including pensions which commenced before 01/07/07.

That is Peter Costello's legacy to retirees!

See all the unfunded public servants superannuation schemes; they are unfunded and untaxed which means that when ex-service persons like myself finally start drawing on my super at 60-it's fully taxed at my marginal tax rates-no tax free super from it for me sorry.
