I agree, it was callous of Labor to leave out the people who build this nation, yet were not to plan for their retirement until only 25 years ago. Pensioners need a basic increase of at least $50 per fortnight to cover costs NOW, not a measly $500 spread out over the year. I don't have a walking cane yet, but I would like to pop Kevin over the head with one.

Mr Speaker, the Government recognises the contribution of older Australians and carers to our community.

To assist them with rising costs, the Government will provide, by 30 June 2008, one‑off lump‑sum payments of $500 to eligible senior Australians, $1,000 to Carer Payment recipients, and $600 to Carer Allowance recipients for each eligible person in their care, at a total cost of $1.8 billion.

Pensioners have begun to receive a higher Utilities Allowance of $500, up from $107.20. Self funded retirees with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card now receive a higher Seniors Concession Allowance of $500 per year, up from $218.

To offer further protection for older Australians against rising living costs, the Government will enhance indexation of the age pension.

The Government is making assessment rules for Carer Payment (Child) fairer by expanding eligibility to cases where a child's disability creates additional caring needs for parents or requires long periods of hospitalisation.

Under the new rules, an additional 19,000 carers of children with severe disability will be entitled to access this payment in 2009‑10, at a cost of $274 million over five years. This measure brings the total additional assistance provided to carers to $1.1 billion over five years.

Aged care providers will benefit from an increase in the Conditional Adjustment Payment, resulting in an additional $408 million for the industry over the next four years.

All Swan said was "We are going to *enhance* the indexing for pensions"....what ever that means

But perhaps there's more "whitie" pensioners than "ethnics" and they don't want to appear to be helping whities....might lose the ethnic vote !!!!

NO one has sugested that disable people should not get an increase, their pension is exactly the same as OLD people and obviously should also have been increased so that everyone can have the reasonable standard of living that they are entittle to.
I am sorry you feel so agressive, OLD people do starve but by the sound of it you would not know about being OLD !!!

Well disabled people are in the same boat
all I'm saying is the old people should be thankful they got something.
The disabled people never have a chance
are given nothing
ever
Just because they are born different

enjoy your $500

Probably pensioners are their own worst enemy , Most are Labor supporters ( I know there are probably exceptions who are not) & would vote Labor would know no matter what they do , they won't change & vote liberal so they can treat pensioners as they like with little or no concequences , they already tried to shaft the Carers & because of the fuss have reinstated it..

Pensioners where part of Howards voting block for years-hence the tax free super, the SATO of $1200 plus the ability of them to earn up to $70,000 tax free from non-super income.

Also government old age pensioners are entitled to their pensions, as Menzies back in the 50's closed the retirement savings accounts set up by the ALP, rolled the money into consolidated revenue with the promise that retirees in the future would be guareented a government pension in return.

I know what you are saying but realistically what % of pensioners woulld be Liberal voters , maybe low double figures & labor 70-80% Labor, I don't have figures to back it up but just an opinion & I think that is why they are disadvantaged ...

It appears beha that if the truth starts hurting somewhere in message land, the moderators kill the thread.
Two very interesting threads were removed yesterday, yours and the one about Work for the dole. Both attracted a lot of views and replies. It appears that there are some people out there who are out to beat their own political drum rather than discuss the problem at hand.

Re:Age Pensioners forgotten again! Reply to this message
The aged pensioners who we are referring to are those people getting something like $286 a week. They are not "rich" self-funded retirees... they don't have much to their name. they just want a little extra money to make ends meet.

Yet the Government has stated that it would be too costly for the country to increase the aged pension.

Well, if Swan couldn't give the aged pensioners a break, how could he give anyone else a break? Why give so much back to those "working families" instead giving less to them and some to the aged pensioners?

I'll tell you why. Because Labor stuffed up. They has six months to prepare the budget, and one of the most basic areas involving the aged of Australia was overlooked. Heck, the aged are going to die, anyway... so what does it matter?????

Well it does matter!

is it correct that pensions are indexed against CPI? Regardless of which side of politics you sit, it would seem that very little has been achieved by either party to relieve the financial stress of aged pensioners

cant remember the name of the famous dude who said, "to die with the same opinion that you had as a young person, is a life wasted"
The vote distribution should be irrelevant to the benefit recieved, unless of course younger voters are too myopic to realise that they will age
