I read it years ago. It basically says the best warriors win their wars without spilling a drop of blood. Firstly you try to befriend your enemy then proceed to white-ant them from the the inside out until you have taken control of their power passively. If this fails you befriend your enemies friends then try to do it. If this fails then you befriend your enemies friends & turn them against your enemy. If this fails you attack your enemy at a time they would never expect, at a place they would never imagine, and you KILL EVERYONE! including your enemy, your enemies friends, all their families & their families friends & families & burn everything for at least the next 4 generations so no one remembers what you did.

I read it years ago. Very wise book.

Makes you realise what a totally lame thing it is to champion the concept of "having a fair fight".

If they won't become your friend then while you're being all nice and saying hello, kick 'em in the nuts and knee them in the head.

Chinese Communist Party is doing exactly this around the world............we should all be thinking very carefully where we are heading.
As an australian/chinese I don't agree with China's policies and having seen the recent out pouring of blind nationalism by my fellow chinese I'd say even Australia had better be careful! The Maoists have just won the election in Nepal and China has ofcourse befriended them and promised help to the poor country............but will we see another Tibet there in a few years?will they be financially owned by China at the end of the day? Chinese communists are befriending countries but what of their motives?
China always comes as a friend but they were suspected of even spying and hacking into Australian and New Zealand Government computers a couple of years ago.
so be warned ..............also see this site ......there is also an article on chinese student spies at universities in Australia.
They recently sent death threats to a Chinese NZ professor.......this is not what the world needs!

I love those old classic texts. They have a timeless quality that never becomes irrelevant.
Netzche (I know I spelled that wrong but can't think of the correct way), Marx, Da Vinci and so on.
Sun Tzu is my favourite though.

Hi Crazy, good to see you around. (was an English bike rally in town last weekend, I kept thinking of you when I saw all these old pommy bikes on the road and at the show)
Art of War is a great read and worthy of study. I have a couple of books of notes I took while studying it. Some other derivatives as well, Art of business, etc etc, but Art of War is where its at.
One saying that kept jumping into the back of my mind whilst readint Aof W, was the line from "The Godfather"..... "you keep your friends close, but you keep your enemies closer"........ and the other classic from the same..."revenge is a dish best served cold"........
Mario Puzo and Sun Tzu would have made interesting dinner guests. lol :)

Way off topic here Crazy, but might be of some help to ya.
I have had back pain for years, lots of "cures" etc etc, but nothing has really worked..so far.
I bought some books on Yoga a few days ago, hoping Yoga could be my salvation. Reading thru, I noticed repeated references to "tight" or "shortening" hamstrings, being an underlying cause of back pain!
Looking objectively at basic Kinesology, it made perfect sense! Something neither I nor many practitioners had considered, being more intent on the problem rather than what may have been the cause!
To cut to the chase, I have been doing some basic hamstring stretches for the last couple of days, and for two days now, I have woke up with much less lower back pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Might be worth a shot?

I've got a half read copy of The Art of War sitting in my room.

I started reading it, then thought 'meh', and haven't picked it up since.

Now The Godfather makes for a fantastic read.

I was in year 9 (14 years old?) when I read the Godfather, with only a vague idea as to what I should expect.

Apart from getting told off by one teacher, who claimed that the text was, more or less, sexist, I got a new understanding on a LOT of things ;)

No Reids, it's got nothing to do with Machiavelli, although some of the points are very similar. Machiavelli is one of the most mis-understood writers in history. Everyone thinks his work is all about manipulation of power and stabbing people in the back and controlling everyone and everything. In actual fact it is about how to get power and hold onto it. He basically states that the best way to get hold of power is to be nice to the people who are likely to put you there. And the best way to STAY in power is to be nice to the people who can take you out! If you don't have any enemies then no-one will want to get rid of you. This is very similar to some writing in Taoist texts, of which Sun-Tzu is one. In Lieh-Tzu there is a story about a king who is in power, and is ruthless, and a sage tells him he would be better off being nice to people. The king says " I can crush anyone, why would I bother being nice". The sage replies "better than being able to defeat an enemy is to have them too scared to attack, right?" King"yeah". Sage"Better than having them too scared would be to have them not caring enough to attack you, right?" K:"yeah". S "Better than having them not caring enough would be to have them LOVE you, right?". K "Yeah". S "so be nice to everyone and you won't NEED your army"

That's the basic gist of it, but is majorly abridged.

Yeah, people see these old taoist texts as a "will to power" so to speak, but if you read beyond the violence it actually spends most of its' time talking about NOT being violent. I guess people don't want to hear that. It's the old karate kid problem, some people do the karate to learn how to kick sh it out of people, others learn it to know how to NOT kick sh it out of people

heironymusbsch,

will consider what you say and put to the missus ?
She has been doing yoga for years, might know what you are suggesting, many thanks.

I like books that make you think and this is one of them.
Hardly one you can read at one sitting?
Did ya see any Velo' bikes at the rally ?

I got a soft spot for certain pommy bikes , and think the bonny very, very over rated .
Glad you had a good time !

sadly some do see the wisdom as being a way to power and not respecting the knowledge.

Wisdom, IMO, is the doorway thru which we must traverse to achieve self improvement and enlightenment, the two most basic and fundamental requirements of evolution, and indeed, isnt that our sole purpose, to evolve?

smart bunch, the Chinese, except for the political mistake of retreating into isolationism in the 15th century. They won't be making that mistake again, that's for sure, and that's why the 21st century will belong to them.

"and indeed, isnt that our sole purpose, to evolve?"

No... our sole purpose is to breed. Other than this biological imperative the only smart thing to do is to have fun.

Although by all means let's all try to evolve - but with what aim? more fun?

As long as it doesn't affect the amount of fun I have.
