Sounds like a good idea. There is no reason for anyone to be drinking and driving. Either do one or the other. This one would be a lot of work to enforce but I still think it would be worth introducing.
I hope it gets introduced. I guess we'll see? |

| Truckies have been on zero for yonks with no discernable reduction in crash rate. Whilst zero won't do any harm, I'll be extremely surprised if it achieves anything of consequence. The abysmal standard of driving is undoubtedly far more signiicant than anything else, but fixing that is clearly beyond the ability of a numbskull like Nolan, or indeed any of the Blighters. |

unidentifiedbloke - you are serious or you just mean that as a jest?
naturally, in our body, at any given time, without drinking, we can have up to 0.02% alcohol, up to 0.05% do not affect us normally, except in some medical cases, above that, "normal" person start showing some symptoms - i mentioned "normal" as so called "functional alcoholic" will and usually do tolerate without outward symptoms up to 0.8%
introduction of prohibition do not work on anything... if you actually want to go that way, why then do not give police the power to terminate on the spot all drink drivers, reposess they car and sell it then on public auction...
while we are at it why we shall not give police the power to exterminate on the spot all crime perpetrators??? |

Bulldoost is right regarding prohibition. However, I think introducing a zero limit could make people think twice about drinking and then driving.
Currently, it is acceptable for people to have a few drinks and then drive. Trouble is, some people have a few too many and still think it is ok. Introducing a zero limit makes it clear that drinking and then driving is not acceptable at all.
Something needs to be done to get that message across. |

True. Not only the standard of driving but the attitude of some drives is also abysmal. Too many drivers need a wake-up call. Perhaps introducing a zero limit will make some of them think? |

This is all horse-sh1t, the type of person who habitually drinks and drives does not give a toss what the limit is.
All this will do is penalise the odd guy who has a beer on the way home or women who have a glass of wine with lunch.
This is s typical Australian solution, stopping the habitual drink drivers is too hard so they take the easy way out.
The answer is to take firm action with serious offenders.
In the UK you get a years ban for a first offence, 10 years for a second, here they should adopt that rule plus confiscate the car (permanently) and give 5 years in jail for a third offence plus life ban.
For causing death and injury serious, jail time, 10-25 years dependent on the severity.
Pollies and police mither about the problem but lack the guts to do something about it.
More often than not they are the worst offenders.
If a drunk killed someone of mine I would kill him and his whole family! |

Prevention would be much better than the cure!!!
I agree that "firm action" should be taken but not just with "serious" offenders, but ALL of them.
Something needs to be done!!! |

Inconceivable, sheeple never were the most intelligent of creatures. problem needs to be addressed well before they get within a kilometer of a set of car keys. Getting fair dinkum about driver licensing & testing will do infinitely more than all the hairbrained 'band-aid' schemes. Introduce pre-driving subjects as compulsory units at secondary school level, including attendance at hospital emergency departments (100 hours practical 'hands on' blood & guts experience mit 95% pass mark), ditto ditto as mortuary assistant, two hour closed book road rules examination with 95% pass mark, ditto ditto defensive driving theory, ditto ditto mechanical theory, and a comprehensive physical / psychiatric assessment, all to be completed before student so much as gets near a car. Actual driving tuition must involve a total of 1000 hours properly documented all weather / all traffic conditions experience, with immediate lifetime ban for falsifying documentation. Pass mark 95%. Then before getting red 'P' plates, 200 hours practical defensive driving with 95% pass mark. |

bahamian, Everything you wrote is right. Repeated offenders do not care about laws. The habitual drunk that drives needs his car taken for good. After a couple of weeks the police should go to his address and see if he or she has got another car. wait and see if they take the car on the road.
Then prosercute ,and send them to jail.
The law now is stupid, they take the car then they can retreive it back in 3 days .What ajoke. |

same as they do now, the laws have always been a matter of 'do as I say, not as I do' |

A friend of mine was coming home from table tennis one evening when she was pulled up by a more officious than usual blue uniformed porker (this particular example was exactly that .. humungous).
Rozzer inquired 'have you been drinking madam' ??
Friend: I am no madam & I resent the implied slight on my character
Rozzer: 'have you been drinking maam' ??
Friend: 'yeah sure, pure unadulterated H2O'
Rozzer: 'do you mean water maam' ??
Friend: 'last time I checked, water was indeed H2O'
Rozzer: (drawing itself up to its full height & assuming as imposing an appearance as intimidating as any clinically obese swine can do) 'not interested in water'
Friend nearly split her sides laughing at the pig. Exit stage |

Better you you don't get a nasty cough then, a couple of mouthfulls of alcohol based cough medicine should see you walking to work.
It is a stupid idea from a person who has no idea as to why our road carnage is increasing.
Speed cameras didn't work so they got more speed cameras.
Inane speed campaigns didn't work, just make more and make them ever more minndless.
Idiots still drive over 0.05, so lower the limit, that should fix everything.
How about these.
Fix the death spots in our roads
Stop handing out licences to every nong with a car
If you go DUI more than once, you NEVER get to drive again, if you break that law, do some gaol time to think about it.
But there is no money in making the roads safer, there is money in speeding fines and court actions.

| The population up here is increasing by x number each month, yet the figures are so arbitrary I don't think anyone has a clue as to the real cause of accidents on the road. As if if really matters anyway, it seems the powers that be are going to do what they want anyway, I think the new Political motto is Like it or Lump it. |

We have a notorious drunk driver up here, he has had his licence suspended permanently, he has no car, he still drives drunk...and to date he has killed three people and not served a day in jail.
I mean WTF is going on? |

I don't suppose it could be related to giving intellectual cripples a licence & sending them out to play in the traffic with all the galahs who found their licence in a packet of cornflakes, rice, or curry ?? |

If Gentle Annie, is serious about reducing the road toll, and not as I suspect, just attempting to clear the roads of all traffic because she can`t handle the road maintenance, I have a suggestion that will solve the problem.
DRINK DRIVING SCHOOL :- People who can`t handle their drink driving are a menace and a danger to everyone, so they simply have to be taught how to do it properly. There is obviously not enough room here to explain such an in depth undertaking but see outline below.
1. "Clients" will be obliged to remain within the confines of the track circut and surrounds for the duration of their course.
2. "Clients" will be fitted with our Exclusive Electronic Device, (EED) for the duration.
3. Our EED, among other things moniters blood alcohol level, secves as a locating device, and administers half minute taser strength "stimulation" to the genetalia of "Clients".
4."Clients" will be expected to maintain a pre designated blood alchohol level at all times, failure to comply will result in "stimulation".
5. "Clients" will be expected to participate in track driving activities, amongst other clients, for a minimum 10 hrs per day, failure to do so will result in "stimulation".
6. Any infringement to the track rules, will result in a "stimulation." |
