CANBERRA, May 8, 2002 AAP - The widow of an Australian soldier killed while fighting in Afghanistan will receive a one-off payment of $92,000 and an annual pension of $13,000.

Special Air Service Regiment sergeant Andrew Russell, 33, was killed when his vehicle hit a landmine on February 16 while on patrol in southern Afghanistan.

He left behind widow Kylie and month-old baby daughter Leisa.

A parliamentary committee was today told Mrs Russell would receive a one-off payment of $37,000 plus another $55,000 to help support her daughter, plus a pension of $504 a fortnight

Doesn`t seem enough eh. Does anyone know if the pension effect, or be effected by other income? Are there other benefits, eg. housing loans etc.?

Best to Kylie & lisa, we appreciate you and Andrew.

Re:widow Reply to this message
i'm assuming this fortnightly payment will be paid for life, regardless of any other income the war widow may make, is that so? if that is correct, it's not so bad...

Probably'. Widows of other public servants certainly get access to the superannuation of their spouse so it appears likely the same applies to widows of service personnel
