THE number of jobless people left to look for work largely by themselves - with almost no help from taxpayer-funded job agencies for three months - has grown to 250,000 since Labor's overhaul of the job network.
But the new system, which redirects help to the most disadvantaged unemployed, has placed more than 5000 of the hardest cases.
In its first three months of operation, the new network steered more than 65,000 people into jobs, with more than 25,000 of them in the two categories of greatest disadvantage, according to data obtained by The Age.

Figures provided at a Senate estimates hearing last week revealed there were 764,400 job seekers in the new system by October 9. About a third - 252,130 - were in the low-service Stream 1, where they qualify only for one face-to-face meeting to help them update a resume and get information on local jobs.
