The Victorian government is expected to announce on Sunday that religious groups will be allowed to discriminate against gays and single mothers in a controversial compromise reached on workers' rights.
Attorney-General Rob Hulls has approved of a plan to let church-run organisations refuse employment to anyone they believe undermines their beliefs, The Sunday Age says.
The newspaper says the plan will allow church groups to discriminate on grounds of sex, sexual orientation, marital status and parental status, but in return these groups will cease being able to discriminate on the basis of race, age, disability, political beliefs, breastfeeding and physical features.
The expected changes to Victoria's equal opportunity laws come several weeks before a report by a state parliament committee into the issue is due to be released.
The changes have angered critics, but church leaders applauded the decision.
Melbourne Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart told the paper the move strikes "a fair and correct balance".
Under the new plans, a church group will have to prove why someone must meet certain religious beliefs if that person is refused employment.
But the onus will remain on the victim to make an official complaint before any action is taken. |

I think this might be un-Constitutional.
The Australian Constitution states:
"117 Rights of residents in States
A subject of the Queen, resident in any State, shall not be subject in any other State to any disability or discrimination which would not be equally applicable to him if he were a subject of the Queen resident in such other State."
Surely this means that, unless they force the same legislation through in every other state and territory, that Victoria is the odd one out, and therefore they are discriminating where no other state or territory is. A "subject of the Queen" resident in Queensland is not subject to this discrimination, therefore the law is un-Constitutional. |

What I cant understand is what has the govt got to do with religion? The church and the govt do not get along and disagree with many things.
It seems to me that the church can do whatever they want. I hope that any priest that molested a child has been in court and tried under the law! If they haven't then there is really something funny going on.
Does anyone know if a pedo priest was tried in court and sentenced and sent to prison? |

The church has a long history of hypocrisy.

"Anyone they believe undermines their belief"
well that's certainly open to a wide spectrum.....many do this anyway and also within the congregration, and now wish to make it law when employing people?
Considering that involves ALL religions....when are they going to insist on high tech survelliance to further separate themselves from the world they are meant, under their religion, to be saving?
A very bad move:( |

c.blogger_au - This is no big deal.
The church is fully entitled to stand up for their beliefs.
For the life of me I don't understand why anyone would even want to work for an organisation that believes that a person will burn eternally in the fires of hell for their sin.
Next, the do gooders will be wailing about banks not letting ex armed robbers become bank tellers. |

Financial groups are already able to discriminate on the basis of a criminal record that dals with fraud robbery etc. It isnt all that different. |

being gay or a single mother is not a crime in this country
There is a major difference unless someone is wearing religious blinkers ! |

being gay ... but they are discriminating against sole mothers as well
and I thought it was the act of s.odomy, and not being gay, was the issue with some religions.
don't tell me they have flip flopped yet again woth their teachings. |

It's an issue because they keep covering up the pedophilia of the priests they employ.
Pope Ratzinger was prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1978 until 2005 and was the highest authority(apart from the then Pope John Paul) to stamp out priests who molested children but he 'buried' many cases and the victims were either paid hush money or ridiculed and denied justice....then further humiliated to see these priests still part of the church and they still harbouring these child molesters....anyone who respects what the catholic church stands for needs to look back on the history of the previous Popes |

| You are to a very large degree right. With the separation of church and state and the Australian Constitution section 116 preventing government from making laws relative to religion the church, any church, can pretty much free wheel (within the bounds of normal law) and get away with it. |

| The fact that the catholic church makes their own laws about employment yet have a history of Popes who fathered many illegitimate children and engaged in h omo sexual affairs is a hoot...well it would be a hoot if they didn't have millions of followers who believe these people are demi gods |

And churches don't pay any Federal or state or local government tax.
No income tax, no GST, no land tax on all their extensive land holdings no council rates.
We pick up the bill for all the incarcerated priests, surely the church should pay for their keep. |

Apparently they will be able to discriminate against four groups in our society.
They can discriminate on the grounds of:
Gender;
Sexuality, or their perception of your sexuality;
Marital status; and
Parental status.
So, if they don't like the fact that you have kids, no job.
If they don't like that you don't have kids, no job.
If they don't like that you are single, no job.
If they don't like that you are married, no job.
If you have a job and you are married, then get divorced, no job.
If you are single, then get pregnant, no job.
Endless permutations that don't even begin to look at hom0sexuality.
No. This legislation needs to be knocked on the head before it gets into the House. Every Victorian needs to speak up, and speak up now! |

Are the churches neglecting their own teachings?
Are they not always saying to distance from the behaviour but not the person, as Christ taught?
This shows their fear and expectations that their God is returning as far as I can see?
And their total misconception of the meaning of their own teachings! |

Unfortunately this isn't restricted to the Catholic Church. Most of the Abrahamic religions are the same. Their religious books teach one thing and the people do the opposite. Just look at what is going on in Gaza for proof |

But currently in Victoria a gay youth club can discriminate against members based on sexual preference and age.
"The Equal Opportunity Act recognises that in order to operate in a balanced and fair and common-sense way in the community - sometimes exceptions need to be made. It recognises that not every situation is covered by a blanket law that makes all discrimination against the law." -Victorian Human Right Commission |

an employer should have the right to choose the most integrative person for any position without being forced to hire anyone that would disrupt the business.......which they do anyway in the applications and interviews surely??
This is making a definite statement and should not be made into a lAW......sets a precedent for way too many other issues? |

Its quite obvious that few if any christian leaders ever read the bible, if they did they would discover that many of the so called doctrines they preach have their origin in either pagan religions or in decisions made well after the first century. eg Christmas, Easter, and the trinity are NEVER mentioned in the bible. Christmas & Easter are pagan festivals & the trinity dates from the 6th century Council of Nicea. Even the concepts of the devil, hell & heaven have been so distorted as to have no relationship with the original hebrew, aramaic or greek meanings. Original language meaning for the devil is simply 'adversary' (note nothing about a creature with horns & pointed tail), hell / hades refers to gehenna (the rubbish dump outside ancient Jerusalem where fires were kept burning 24 x 7 for hygiene reasons), and heaven / paradise will be here on earth Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done ON EARTH'). Sorry to disappoint all those who believe their ancestors are 'up there' because the bible NEVER says that either. Dead people are exactly that, even really significant individuals like Abraham & King David are as dead as a doornail ... I challenge anyone to show me a reference in either the bible or the koran that says otherwise. |
