'For more on the story watch 60 Minutes at 7:30pm tonight'
In an ironic twist, the fee paid by 60 Minutes, for the 'exclusive', has probably covered a fair proportion of th surragacy fees

The practice is quite common, in the USA, for infertile couples
Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick have announced that they are expecting twins. However, you may have noticed that Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't look very pregnant. That is because the couple are having their twins through the use of a surrogate mother.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick say that they expect the birth of their twins to take place in the summer and they have already announced that they will be twin daughters.

A bit of background...
TREVOR ELWELL and Peter West know they are in for an anguished wait, pacing the floor outside a Mumbai maternity ward as they listen to the cries of the mother of their children.
The couple have never met the woman bearing their twins or the donor who provided the eggs. They will not be allowed to attend the birth or meet any of their children's family, but minutes after their newborns take their first breaths, they will be handed to the men - to be whisked away to a life in suburban Melbourne.
Mr Elwell and Mr West, both 40, are among the first Australians to pay an Indian woman to carry their children. So far, about 30 couples are pursuing surrogacy in India, including three who will fly to Mumbai next month to start treatment. Five are expecting children, including Mr Elwell and Mr West, but so far no Australian babies have been born.
Commercial surrogacy has been legal in India since 2002, but has been attracting more Australians since the falling exchange rate pushed the cost of buying a baby from the US to more than $300,000 last year.
A baby carried by an Indian surrogate can be bought for as little as $30,000, plus an extra $10,000 if the couple want to use a Caucasian egg donor, usually flown in from South Africa.
Surrogates are housed together with access to doctors, nurses, maids and social workers during their pregnancy and can earn up to 10 times their annual income by carrying a baby.

I feel so sorry for the children.
It's simply not fair on them to bring them into that type of household.
It is morally wrong |

Those children are going to be bullied at school.
Shouldn't we as parents try to create scenarios where they are not subject to bullying and a difficult childhood? |

'Those children are going to be bullied at school'
That's NONSENSE
I've known 3 kids, in their 30's now, raised by same sex parents (the result of divorce, where fathers gained full-time custody)
It doesn't happen
This is the same lame reasining that was used against un-married and mixed-race parents 50 years ago
It was a cover for bigotry then, as it is now

chicken,
in case you hadnt noticed, the 'trendy social experiment' is happening more and more often around the world as gay couples commit themselves to relationships and raising a family together.
They know that they (and their children) will face more problems then the 'normal' family, but their committment to their family includes a lot of thought and planning about these problems they will face, most of which are perpetrated by h.o.m.o.phobics in the community who in their ignorance and unfounded fear of gays' and their families, pass these fears onto their own children who then go to school and bully the children of gay parents. |

"most of which are perpetrated by h.o.m.o.phobics in the community"
You sound very heterophobic there. Just because someone disagrees with your beliefs does not make them h omophobic.
"who in their ignorance"
Are not people allowed to disagree with your beliefs ?
If they do they are ignorant ROFLMAO...
"and unfounded fear of gays'"
Now because they don't believe what you do they are all full of fear. Bit dramatic don't you think ?
"and their families, pass these fears onto their own children who then go to school and bully the children of gay parents."
Much like you do crying out that everyone that disagrees with your belief is a h omophobe.
Get a grip not the whole world has to have your beliefs. People are free to choose what they believe. |

Hi steve,
you're quite right. The whole world does not have my beliefs and everyone is entitled to their own.
What I posted were simply my beliefs and opinions and a few of those from gay families that I know.
Quite simple really.
You can pull my post to bits and put your own interpretation(s) on it, but dont get your knickers in such a twist about it!
If you want to discuss or debate anything I have posted, you're most welcome. That's what these boards are supposed to be for. (But I wont be here all night - it's nearly 2am here in NZ ! ) |

I commented on your knickers in a twist over people who don't share your minority beliefs. I don't give a rats ass what you think about me.

I made my comments and debated your unfounded accusations and generalisations. IE. Knickers in a twist.
You don't have anything to debate as far as I can see... |

Ok steve,
can see that you're not the discussion sort.
it's a shame though that when an interesting topic like this comes up, more posters like yourself dont recognise an opportunity for discussion, but become antagonistic instead. Never understood that.
Have a good night. |

The couple have thought about what THEY want, and have not considered likely/possible consequences for the children.
Very selfish of them. |
