what purpose did the governments of Australia allow immigration? I'm thinking it was after the world wars and the fear of not enough people to protect our borders.. so the govt. allows foreigners in under the guise of 'suring up' our population...aiming to have a base of strength that may be able to repel an invading force..
yet now we see the govt.'s screening process of those willing to accept Australian values falling short, continually.
forget the external forces, Australia should be now worried about internal parties who are set at breaking down Australia's values and wishing to set-up continual unrest with the minority groups.....
Time to re-think immigration and it's processes. |

Here's an example. In my area nearly every petrol station attendant and nearly every trolley boy i see in supermarket carparks are recently arrived migrants from india. The reason being that they can't get anyone local to even apply for the jobs. And i'm sure that for them its a means to an end, in other words i bet they are studying so that they to don't have to do that sort of work in the future. Good on them and good luck to them.
(based on a yarn i had with the attendant at my local BP) |

mdoinit - Pretty stupid reason when considering that the Romans tried that same policy 1600+ years ago, and lost their entire empire because of it.
During the 1980's, the federal labour government/s couldn't let in enough Vietnamese boat people, in the shortsighted hope they would all become labour supporters. |

Gave yourself away there
It's not about migration levels, is it ?
More about different colours and cultures on what you still perceive as New Britain

Multiculturalism began in Australia on 18 January 1788.
I can't see it going away |

We have a skills shortage at the moment and that is one of the reasons for immigration. Int the UK the Australian government is holding huge emigrate to Australia fairs and they-the British are lining up to enquire. Depending too what kind of visa they manage to get , some of the migrants pay for their children's schooling in state schools,(bringing in children is good too) can't use medicare for 2 years etc. So they pay for a visa and then there is the extras so we are making money from migrants, they then contribute with there skills and hopefully take up citizenship and I think you will find that many do.
we do need to make sure that young Australian's are given the training opportunities too. |

<<<'Multiculturalism has always been the failed joke!'>>>
Correct.
........................
Mistaking words for deeds is a common enough trap. But Andrew Robb did something altogether different on Monday when he took another careful step towards dumping multiculturalism.
Robb, the parliamentary secretary for immigration and multicultural affairs, prefers to talk about forging a shared national identity made up of core values that unite a people from diverse cultures. By effectively rejecting the old M-word, Robb is not playing word games. He is trying to dislodge the multicultural mentality that was imposed on the nation more than 30 years ago. But it won't happen until the Howard Government formally ditches multiculturalism, a deliberately slippery word.
As a descriptor, multicultural fits nicely. Australia is a brilliant mix of people, a young country that has successfully integrated more than 6.5million migrants from more than 200 countries. But once the "ism" was added to multicultural, an accurate adjective morphed into a philosophy: although originally based on fine notions of tolerance and inclusion, it ended up separating people according to culture and eschewing any criticism of minorities.
This end result is what historian John Hirst calls "hard" multiculturalism. It rejects any expectation of integration and notions of core values. It promotes Australia as a series of Balk *** ed statelets. The softer form respects difference but expects migrants to unite behind a few core beliefs. The confusion between versions has allowed hard multiculturalism to endure. That's why the word has to go.

<<<More about different colours and cultures on what you still perceive as New Britain>>>
This was hardly a perception when my forbears arrived during the 19th and 20th century from Britain...but also from Ireland, Holland, France, Germany, Poland, and Lithuania.
They liked it as it was.
They integrated into a pleasant cohesive society.
Multiculturalism opposes integration.
The original copied comment is clearly racist, and provides an excellent example of Anglophobia. |

Since 1900 Australia's population has had 30% of the population born overseas.
We need immigration to build the population, as Australia's birthrate is too low.
Without immigration, the economy would go into a rapid decline and loss of living standard's would result.
Sure immigrants can be a little clique-y but by the time you get to 2nd and 3rd generation, they are as Aussie as the racists who complain about them.
It is natural for them to stick together in a new country, look at Earls Court in Britain, Aussietown.
Please note: Everyone not of indiginous blood is an immigrant or descended from immigrants. |
