RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
While I can feel sorry for them I have to say they have brought it all on themselves as having been there myself with a home at Strathfield, everything was alright till the agent rented the home to people with kids. Then all hell broke loose, within 3 months there was only 1 cupboard in the kitchen that still had a door hanging by 1 hinge, no fronts in any of the drawers, the clothes line a pile of rubbish, with it being a full brick home the walls were plastered and had holes in every room, Broken windows and all windows were leadlight, and a 8 foot x 5 foot plate glass window on the front verendah, the carpet stained beyond help, the vanity cracked along with the toilet and cistern. All this damage occured in just 3 months with just 2 kids, to add insult to injury I was told to get everything repaired and it came as a shock when they were handed their eviction notice with the Agent being instructed that any person thinking of renting would be required to sign ducuments that they had no kids and if they were planning for any they would vacate, and also no pets. After being accused of discriminating and too selective I chose to sell as after all one does have to look after their investment. It is a well know fact that the people today with kids have a total disrespect for anything that is not their own and when they break something due to their temper tantrums that the owner will pay to have it repaired. SORRY WRONG ANSWER You damage you pay. Or the easiest solution NO KIDS OR ANIMALS. It is time that people realised that if they rent a home they cannot just move in and then trash it and expect the owner to repair the place at their expense. Learn to control your kids or live in a tent or what ever, you can always apply for a Government home. It is time people with kids woke up and learned to look after a rental home like it was their own so treat it with respect.

My kids never damaged a single thing in a rental property...but them they weren't wreckers at all.

I have come across people that feel if they paythe rent they can do whatever the heck they like....nope sorry folks - you cannot. You are renting - borrowing for a fee...it does not belong to you to destroy.

Exactly I'm a mother of a 5 year old boy and an almost 2 year old daughter. They can be little mischiefs at times but I keep them in line whenever possible.I have stains on my carpets to but accidents happen.Yes some peoples kids are pains, But kids will be kids. And most of the population either have kids or pets. I'd hate to think whats going to happen to our younger generations with all of this?

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
Kids brought up in a responsible famliy enviroment are taught not to swing on cupboard doors etc . But there again the people renting might look squeaky clean on the outside and be degenerates as soon as your backs turned .

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
A friend of mine took weeks to get a house and she believed it was because she had kids. She's a single mother with 4 kids and keeps her house clean, pays her rent on time and the kids haven't wrecked anything in the house except a flyscreen (which she replaced). It took her weeks of staying with her mum before finding a house, and now 3 years later she wants to move because the landlord jacked the price way up without making any improvements to the house that need doing, but she can't find a place...because she has kids! And it's not just because she's a single mum as......

Another family I know, a mother and father and 2 kids, tried for 9 weeks to find a house - the same problem. They had good references, the mother keeps her house spotless, the husband is working. They gave up and went to Queensland where they are staying with the Grandparents to try and save enough to money to put a deposit down on a house instead.

I have been looking for a house for a year....but I have two cats and I am not giving my cats up just so I can move, so I stay put in a house that the owner also does not want to make improvements to (which are needed...e.g. I've been waiting for 2 months to have the garage roof re-tiled as the rain comes in. I have a tarp over it at present put there by the S.E.S.)

So, it is not always because people do not take care of rental properties that people can't get houses. Unfortunately though, people do stereotype (on many issues) and this is causing a huge problem.

We talked to a man the other day who has a job, is single and living in his car because he cannot find a place to rent, and has been doing so for the past two weeks. He had lived with his parents before (in another town)and had moved, and therefore had no references from estate agents.

>>>A friend of mine took weeks to get a house and she believed it was because she had kids<<<

i have the final say on who rents my houses and my priority is this
1) older couples (considered more stable)
2) employed couples
3) employed singles
4) older couples with pets
5) employed couples with pets
6) employed singles with pets
7) employed couples with kids (last resort)

i have no trouble renting and no trouble with any problems but i have older couples renting now and its good

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
Sue your agent, do not stereotype all people with kids.
I believe in general that if you do not take the time to personally rent your property then you are simply asking for trouble. Yes there are undesirable(stronger language edited out) tennants out there, but there are also undesirable(stronger language edited out) landlords, (for example I lived in a flat where I could not understand why the kitchen tiles kept breaking, then when he repaired for the fourth time floor underneath was rotten....moved out a week later, and we were perfect tennants).
My suggestion, nominate yourself as the lawnmowing contractor, then you get to be on the property every week(condition of lease) and charge a little more, which should put the feral's off

The only time I've ever had problems with a tenant was a young "professional" couple with two frigging kids. What sort of a Doctor allows their kids to make holes in a wall so they talk to each other ?

Never rent to people with kids

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
I think that there are going to be alot more empty houses around in Australia If landlord/s keep going the way they their been going and alot more people on the streets.
So all you landlords who are out there don't go wingeing when you can't afford to keep your investment property from having no tenants.

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
I have rented twice in my life & the house which we are in right now, we brought whilst it was a rental.....
The 1st time I rented I was 22yrs& single with a cat, my belief is if you are living in someone else's house you treat it better than yours because you are just borrowing it, my 1st landlord was very approachable & reasonable....
The 2nd time I rented I was separated & had a cat & 2 small dogs, that house was 100yrs+ but I looked after it cause it was my castle, however that landlord was the landlord from hell, she would come to collect her rent once a week, request a coffee, basically do a quick home check each week, not to mention the times that she would just let herself in whilst I was at work then come & tell me that "the shower is fixed now"..... When I left that house it was more clean etc than when I went into it, however she knew she was loosing a good tentant so she started the rumours that it was filthy etc....(small town country town)
Now the 3rd, we brought this house whilst it was a rental, the people into at the time turned out to be ferals, "they didn't want to move out", when they learned that someone was interested in it they attempted to get a loan to buy(no luck needless to say), when we 1st came to look at it, it was in reasonable condition, by the time we got the keys, there was damage..... These ferals had 3 boys, we had to rip out the whole toilet, tiles cistern everything, the smell of a public toilet was more pleasant.....
Sorry it isn't just if people have pets, children etc, it is that lots of people have no pride& couldn't care less about their reputation.....
If I won lotto the last thing I would do is buy investment property, just to give my house over & hold your breathe that the tentant will have some pride....
In the same thought, some landlords leave A LOT to be desired as well....

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
The home we owned before this one we sold & an investor brought it.....
We sold it in 2003 for $170000, he sold it less than a year later for $250000, it is on the market again for $299000...
When we were selling we offered to put in a new stove, but the "investor" said no need he will do all that.... That stove had caused a small fire on 1 of the hotplates, in the photos on the real estate website, the stove is still the same( all 30yrs old of it).....
Both these landlords have done NO improvements to this house, but put their hand out for around $300 per week.....
So are they just the tenants from hell with money behind them I ask?????????

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
NOT everyone single mother with kids are the same ... I found it hard to rent a place here in Brisbane after i had left Rockhapmton .... some of the places i looked i would let a dog live in, i was even knocked back on those ... when I got a place the horror story I heard from the neighbours of the people that were in it before me drugo they had holes in the wall. In one wall alone they found over 100 used needles they had people sleeping under the house, mean to say it was dirt i wouldnt let the kids play under the house ... the agent gave me a hard time when i was leaving as i got a dept of housing home ... then he puts in drugos

Not everyone's children are rotton. I am lucky with a good little boy. And if I say don't touch, then he doesn't. If something broke I would pay.

I am too a landlord, and am very attached to the property I rent out. I could notice every scratch and I too would be upset by what happened to you.

Did thye get their bond back? Even so I am sure it was not even enough to cover the damages. I supose insurance comes in after that. However, the tennant should be responsible for the entire debt of the damages. Otherwise, they could feel free to trash the joint for a penalty of about $1000.

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
Years ago I took a rental on the basis that it had a bath tub (rare). There were syringes in the gardens, mould on the ceilings, floor coverings had been ripped up. In the far corner of the yard was a pen still full of dog poop. The glistening we noticed when we put the sprinkler on turned out to be shattered light bulb glass. $200 per week about 12 years ago. (Mount Isa - they have to sting those miners out of their money)

The neighbours told us the people that lived there before had crazy partys and wrecked the place.

Previous tenants - all working singles.

Umm ok.

My parents have always rented, and have rented with us.
We were Taught to never damage someone else's property.
Maybe one should look at the mentality of the renters, as opposed to blanketing the good families who TAKE CARE of rental properties.

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
Maybe we should think about the fact that lots of people whether they be low income tenants, high income tenants, landlords who are financially well off, tenants with children, tenants with pets, just don't have the pride about themselves to care for other people's property & perhaps their own property means little to them as well....
There are "c*r*a*p" tenants, there are "c*r*a*p" landlords & yes there are "c*r*a*p" homeowners whom you wish not to live next door to.... It all comes down to how they wish to be seen in other people's eyes don't you think?????

I hope you don't mean me doctorwho, I mean people in general......
Think about many of the homes you drive past, the ones that are well cared for, they may noe be owner occupied, the homes you drive past & they are like a tip, they may not be rentals?
I you don't care how people look at your home, (in either favour or disapproval), then you won't take care of it whether you rent or own......
Its all about PRIDE! & SELF RESPECT, the respect of others as well......

Re:RENTING TO PEOPLE WITH KIDS Reply to this message
After reading through this thread I find the comments of Athair Soichain most offensive.

His suggestion that every landlord should be killed is disgusting and sick. What a sick twisted individual.

He has always attacked landlords without knowing individual circumstances. He talks about publicly hanging people simply for having investment properties????

Does anyone here agree with this guy?

He also goes on and on about "greed" with landlords and money lenders, never suggesting that anyone else suffers the same greed. Only hatred towards landlords!

I think this proves that he has either been evicted in the past, or could never get himslef into the financial postion to become a landlord.

Either way, his jealousy and hatred is so easily visible.

He is a very unstable person. I remind people here never to give him any personal information about themselves, no matter how much he asks, as he should never be trusted.
