According to the federal government, there are 14,000 illegal immigrants roaming the country.
We urgently need to introduce a national ID card system with severe penalties for anybody employing or transacting with a person who does not produce an ID card... |

I think it was Hawke tried to do this many years ago....it was rejected by the people then and it would be more so now....a National ID card would be a smart card and would have toooooooo much information including personal stored on it therefore it could be abused even more today than in Hawke's time.

| Seriously I have this argument with my hubby, if you have NOTHING to hide, why not an ID card for the government records? They could ask me how many times I pick my nose a week doesn't really worry me..... If an ID card helps keep a track on illegal goings on, well why not??? |

| I dont have anything to hide. My point is that the government already know enough about the average Oz citizen as it stands. Id card or no ID card. I dont care either way. |

Why stop at that, it should be mandatory to have installed in every citizen's house video and audio surveillance to observe all activities that go on.
Just remember that if you have NOTHING to hide, why not? |

You really DO want a police state don't you j e r k
You probably think "well this law or that law doesn't affect me so i'm for it. Can't you see the thin edge of the wedge is now a lot thicker? Take RBTs for eg, they start off pulling you up for rbt but now also check your licence, then add your rego sticker, then a quick once over on your car, but naturally you would say "well I've got nothing to hide" well I can't wait for the day when You get collared for some new rule. I bet you'll squeal like a p i g |

Major example……………..
Anyone with, or for that matter without, a Medicare card, can go form doctor to doctor, collecting prescriptions…….
THEN…………..
Go from pharmacy to pharmacy, filling the prescriptions.
Then they can be sold on the black market, or more often sent or taken out of the country, where they can be sold for a huge amount of money.
We need some kind of a data base, with everyone who is entitled to call this country home, on it.
Visit a doctor and it goes on the computer. Then if a person, goes to another doctor, that doctor can then say “No” if it is for a request for the same or similar drug.
At this point in time our medical system is abused beyond belief, with no checking it. |

| It may start with a card but it will end up a microchip. Anyone who votes for a national ID card is crazy! its just another way to control and take away more of our freedom. First its law to microchip the dog. Eventually they will be microchipping babies as they leave the womb. - |

| Onethousandfold I agree with you completely. Slowly but surely our freedoms are being eroded away. But others say if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about. What a pile of garbage. A national id card is just one more means of policing society. Just think we already have keycards that if needed I am sure they could request through the courts to track our movements for one thing. Cameras hovering around watching you root someone elses wife. When it going to stop. But we are told its to catch criminals. A national id card will mean nothing to a career criminal. |

If Howard wins I'm going to stop shaving and cutting my hair
On the day I turn up for my photo I'm going to wear the thickest glasses I can find.
The day after my photo I will shave my beard, cut my hair and throw away my glasses.
That will stop them.
Just because you have nothing to hide now does not mean you will have nothing to hide in 50 years time. Fight the card now or you will have to fight the microchips later. |

". Fight the card now or you will have to fight the microchips later." BINGO!!
"On the day I turn up for my photo I'm going to wear the thickest glasses I can find."
That wont do sweet FA. Biometric photographs of faces store dimensions of the face such as the distance between the eyes across the nose, chin gurth, cheek bone structure etc..
Its the next best thing to a FINGER PRINT. IF the government cant get your prints unless your arrest then why should they have this information too.
Its the turning of a democratic society into what the NAZI's would have had if they had the technology. |

Face recognition software can use this data to tell who you are from a camera shot from about 500 metres away.
This sort of technology is military grade and is slowly making its way into general society. Look at London.
This is free country and we are entitled to go where ever we want WHEN we want without any body or authority knowing who you are.
Remember this famous quote:
Those who sacrifice security for a little temporary saftey and liberty (freedom) DESERVES NEITHER. |

| Good idea. An ID card would be very useful, especially in identifying crooks and people trying to get something dishonestly. The authorities have large amounts of data available now, so why not have just one card? It would also be very useful for proof of your own identity. |
