I pose this questoin after having heard 92.9 talking to Elizabeth Foster (the 79yr old that was bashed in her Gosnells home) and then asking for callers and there opinions on if they felt safe living here now days...
So hence with all the crime that has been going on in town recently I ask this simple question.
"Do you feel safe living in Perth?" why and why not??
Personally I do because I tend to stick to areas that I know well, I moved here from a country town in tassie and at times thoguh I did feel safer there than what I do here but below is a list of areas that I feel most safe in.
: Morley
: Midland
: Cannington/Beckenham
: Canning Vale
: Armadale (shopping centre and surrounds)
: Fremantle
: Belmont
: Mindare/Clarkson
: Joondalup (its not that bad near the shopping centre)
but this is a place for all to voice there opinions so the question is now officially out there for you all to answer.
do you feel safe in perth??
thanks for voicing your opinion, maybe this will send a message to premier Allan Carpenter that more police and security personal are needed on our streets to keep us safe and hence things like car jackings and bashing won't happen as much or better not at all.
cheers,
Mitch

| Nth of the river on the coast. Quite simple, it is not safe to go to Northbridge at night, one must avoid Forrest place at all times, be on constant guard where ever you are. Perth is a violent place, in fact most violent place I have lived and I lived in the States. |

You people are lucky to live in Perth.Sydney,Brisbane and Melbourne are 3 times mor violent than Perth.
Northbridge is Perth's answer to Kings Cross and it is tame compared to Kings Cross.
Sure violence will increase but it will never catch up to the cities on the east coast. |

| Once again WB, you make silly assumptions. Have been to Russia, Africa, Sth America and China many times. Of course one is not safe in parts of Africa, they however are not considered civilized, so one can expect violence just by going there. Australia on the other hand, for it's tiny population is very violent. |

But truthfully I don’t feel nervous here and don’t perceive Perth as a violent place. How many murders a year do we have as a state? I don’t hear of too many. But then again I am south of the river. LOL |

It's all relative isn't it.
If we look at other capital cities around the world, and take into account our population - then no, Perth isn't that safe.
However, I can honestly say I'm not personally inclined to feel unsafe in Perth. |

Law enforcement and anti-crime activists regularly claim that the United States tops the charts in most crime-rate categories, but a new international study says that America's former master -- Great Britain -- has much higher levels of crime.
The International Crime Victims Survey, conducted by Leiden University in Holland, found that England and Wales ranked second overall in violent crime among industrialized nations.
Twenty-six percent of English citizens -- roughly one-quarter of the population -- have been victimized by violent crime. Australia led the list with more than 30 percent of its population victimized.
The United States didn't even make the "top 10" list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime.
Jack Straw, the British home secretary, admitted that "levels of victimization are higher than in most comparable countries for most categories of crime."
Highlights of the study indicated that:
* The percentage of the population that suffered "contact crime" in England and Wales was 3.6 percent, compared with 1.9 percent in the United States and 0.4 percent in Japan.
* Burglary rates in England and Wales were also among the highest recorded. Australia (3.9 percent) and Denmark (3.1 per cent) had higher rates of burglary with entry than England and Wales (2.8 percent). In the U.S., the rate was 2.6 percent, according to 1995 figures;
* "After Australia and England and Wales, the highest prevalence of crime was in Holland (25 percent), Sweden (25 percent) and Canada (24 percent). The United States, despite its high murder rate, was among the middle ranking countries with a 21 percent victimization rate," the London Telegraph said.
* England and Wales also led in automobile thefts. More than 2.5 pe ... |

After 3 home invasions in a year, one of them by a pair of men who were serial rapists (I got away - just) and after constantly feeling threatened (and being threatened) on Perth's public transport and generally feeling unsafe in many parts of Perth I sold my home and moved to Sydney (now I'm in tassie). I made a HUGE loss by selling the house because it was in the Belmont area and it was just prior to the housing boom (so it would have been worth a lot now) but my personal safety and well-being became paramount. I also had to give up my business there and have never fully recovered from the whole trauma. I was literally terrified to be in my own home.
I feel safer ANYWHERE than I did in Perth. Much as I love it, especially Freo and all my family still live there - I just wouldn't be able to move back. |

I have wandered through northbridge and forrest place at night on the weekends and never felt unsafe ... maybe because I don't live in Perth I was there on a 'safe' night ... but have done the walk through Forrest Place several times at night and never had any troubles ... maybe I am just lucky.
Also I grew up in Sydney and Kings Cross is one of the safest places to be at night now. Cops every where, lights and heaps of tourists and city dwellers walking around the numerous cafes and restaurants ... prostitutes and drug pushers still work down the alleys ... but who walks down dark unlit alleys unless they are looking for some?? |

| I don't live in Perth anymore but I grew up there. I have always felt safe whatever suburb I was living in. I started in Mt Claremont but I have lived in Mosman Park, Karrinyup, Innaloo, and Glendalough. That last address was the only time I wasn't in shared accommodation. It was a ground floor unit and it had basically no security. I was there for 2 years and never had a problem or felt unsafe. To be honest I feel less safe in Mandurah nowadays. |

| I don't know about that, I work with a guy who was born here when the population was only about 700 and there was very little crime. With a bigger population you get an increase in crime, sad but true. Still if I had a choice I would still live in Mandurah instead of Perth. |

Our laws and punishments are far too weak, until we go back to harsh hard sentences and discipline in our schools we are on a downward spiral into a society of violence.
I am seriously thinking about bringing back a little saturday night special from my next visit to the USA. If the goevrment will not protect us we need to protect ourselves, it is better to be tried by twelve than carried by six. |
