Hi belinda, the qfs course in kalgoorlie is a bit more than the one held in perth, as it goes for an extra day. I went to an info session and they said about $3900, but i would have to double check where i wrote it down.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
The hype around the mining ind in WA especially is just that a lot of hype. There are very few jobs that actually pay truelly big money. The exceptions are specialist roles such as geologists, engineers etc. The trades guys can often get the same or near same money in the major centers. Non trade jobs are generally not that well paid but there are a few exceptions.

Above the tropic of capricorn the summer temps are blistering - 50C in the shade and 60C+ in the open.

Recruiting agencies.
Beware of these. If you absolutely need to get your foot in the door to get experience then they may be your only option but contractors use labor from recruiters as a last resort to man up. They are the first to get dropped as a project winds down. Even if your recruited directly by the company projects only last from weeks to several months. Then your back hunting for work again.

So called training schools. Almost all are a waste of time. The major companies have their favourites who they accept quals from. For example I did a confined space with a painter whose company did shut downs. He was on his 3rd CS in 8 months!!!

Getting a start is more about WHO you know than what you know. It can take months of applying to get selected then even when you do it can be weeks even months before they actually start you.

The industry is populated by contract firms who supply services to each other and the big mining companies. There's usually several in each field all paying differently and with differing levels of worker satisfaction. Some are out right rogues.

The work is long hours, hard, hot and dirty in many cases with little opportunity for recreation. Many camps have serious problems with drinking and fighting. The long hours and long work periods take their toll on most workers after a while. Many workers in the camps I see are often like zombies by the end of their stints. You need to be mentally tuff and resilient to handle most jobs for long periods in the conditi ...

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
The deal with mining positions in WA is basically the same wherever you go in Australia...it is a question of QUALIFICATIONS!!!

If you have relevant qualifications, you are likely to pick up a job very quickly.

ie a trade certificate (mechanic, electrician, boilermaker etc), relevant university degree professional qualifications (engineering, metallurgist etc), relevant TAFE or other professional association type qualifications (shotfirer's ticket, dogman's ticket for crane operations etc.)

It also helps if you have done an industry recognised induction course (eg MARCSTA) and a senior first aid ticket.

Generic positions requiring little or no qualifications might include catering, cleaning, tending the wetmess bar etc.

Positions of this sort are generally contracted externally via catering companies (eg Spotless, Nationwide, ESS, TMS) or sometimes advertised in local townsites on noticeboards etc.
ie THEY ARE NOT EASY TO COME BY!!!

Plant Operator and Haulpak driver type roles are generally taken by those with long term industry experience in similar roles. These people generally start in unqualified positions, hear of an internal vacancy on site with the relevant contractor company, have relevant heavy vehicle licences etc, and go talk directly with the appropriate onsite people.

You basically need to prove your worth and commitment first, and then hopefully sweet talk your way into a role should an opportunity arise.

As a general rule - without tickets or qualifications - best place to start is probably gonna be with one of the contract catering companies.

Another avenue to explore is through temporary labour hire recruitment agencies (eg Extraman). These companies usually have a few generic type roles (eg laboratory sample prep) for which they can provide a limited measure of training through metro based facilities before dispatching to remote areas for short term casual employment contracts. Be wary though – some of these agencies can be pretty shoddy!

It definitely helps if you know someone in the industry who can provide a suitable reference...even if only as a character reference!

With generic unqualified positions you basically need to be able to drop anything and everything for an IMMEDIATE start.

This is probably why most people don’t get a response from companies they contact about such roles – in most cases any such roles have usually been filled before they even get to be advertised!

As a general rule – mining companies will not pay relocation expenses or FIFO costs if you cant offer them qualifications or significant relevant industry experience in return.

Many people take a chance and hope for the best - relocate up north, make a few friends, hear of a suitable role becoming available etc.

The trick is being able to support yourself in the meantime…and with cost of living expenses in remote areas being what they are, this is a BIG CONSIDERATION!!!

People need to remember – remote area employment is generally HOT, DIRTY, DUSTY, REPETITIVE WORK for LONG HOURS sometimes in DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS in remote locations with little in the way of recreational facilities…with the exception of the wet mess :)

Almost all sites have gyms and other sporting or recreational facilities, but you gotta balance this against work hours (at least 12hrs/day) and sleep (8hrs/day). Obviously by the time you’ve eaten, taken care of necessary ablutions etc, you don’t have a lot of spare time to enjoy the serenity :p

It generally takes a very disciplined individual to stick it out long term ( >1-2yrs).

This type of employment (esp FIFO) is also not considered conducive to maintaining a healthy relationship with the better half back home…unless you can get them a job working alongside you as well!

Good luck to those wanting to obtain a career in minerals/mining :)

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hey rygar...My hubby has just quit working in Mines in WA after 4 very long years!!!! I totally agree with what you said in regards to Mine working conditions and areas...and the hard factor in maintaining any kind of healthy relationship with wife, girlfriend, children or whoever...my hubby and I certainly had our ups and downs but what it always came back to was knowing he loved us beyond his own desires and being secure in our love and not taking on other peoples views or condemnation...LOVE really does conquer all. As much as I dont agree with a family being seperated for money reasons,I had to allow his journey and trust he would get the truth in the end...that money isnt above family or love. It has taken 4 bloody years for him to see that and I wouldnt change any of it for the deepness of love, thankfullness and respect we now have toward each other...but I dont believe its a good thing for families to do if it means alot of time apart...kids really struggle...our 8yr old daughter carried the rejection of her dad being away but thank God she has healed and it isnt too late. I would say to anyone considering Mining work to be aware of what challenges you and your family may face ahead and be prepared to work through them as they arise. Dont allow the love of money to destroy the precious gift of the family you have been blessed with. Yes eveyone is different but I just wanted to share our truth with the Mining work experience.

Blessings...Jodes :o)

AFTER COLLEGE I HAVE WORKED FOR PACIFIC RENT-ALL HERE IN HAWAII, GOOD YEAR TIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY ALSO KNOWN AS GOOD YEAR GEMINI AUTO CARE AND I AM NOW CURRENTLY WORKING AS A MECHANIC HELPER FOR A CONSTURCTION COMPANY HERE IN HAWAII. MY DUTIES ARE TO HELP THE MECHANICS, PERFORM MINOR REPAIRS, FUEL AND GREASE EPUIPMENT AND MACHINERY, SERVICE POWER TOOLS AND OTHER SMALL EQUIPMENT AND RUN ERRANDS. I HAVE BEEN WORKING IN THIS FIELD FOR FOUR YEARS NOW. I HAVE TAKEN ONE YEAR OF WELDING AND SHEET METAL FABRICATION AND COMPLETED TWO YEARS OF AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS TECHNOLOGY IN HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW DO I GO ABOUT THE PROCESS OF GETTING INTO THE MINING INDUSTRY, GETTING A WORK VISA AND WORKING THERE IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO WORK IN AUSTRALIA AND LIVE THERE. I FIGURED THAT SINCE I'M 28 AND GOING ON 29 IN OCTOBER I SHOULD HURRY UP AND FOLLOW MY DREAMS OF WORKING AND LIVING THERE IN AUSTRALIA. IF ANYONE CAN HELP I WOULD APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hey guys.
I live in Adelaide and I'm looking to get a high paid job in the mines. I don't have any qualifications. I'm willing to do a course or get a license etc, but don't want to spend much money without a reasonable chance of getting a job out of it. I found this company called hogan mining (www.hogan-mining.com.au) who look pretty professional and say they will give you all the info and help you need to find a job, but they charge $214 for the info up front so I'm a bit wary as to whether they are genuine or not. Does anyone know? Have you used their info or got a job through them? I can't seem to find the address they listed in the whitepages online. I'm also considering the ebook for $30 which a few people on here have suggested at www.getajobinthemines.co. nz
I'd like to drive a big dump truck or something like that, but I'd try something more physical if necessary. I'm not all that strong or fit but I'd be willing to put up with long hours considering the money involved, and I'm sure I'd get fitter and stronger in time as long as I could handle the work initially

Any help or suggestions people could give would be appreciated.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hi tactronic1 :)

Re: Hogan Mining and others making similar claims.

Like anything, anywhere...if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Apparently there is a sucker born every minute and fools only seem too glad to be parted from their money.

MOST reputable recruitment agencies charge the client company a commission for a set length of time for placing a contractor into a position on a site.

Doesnt it seem strange to you that someone says here I can help you earn a squillion bucks but only if you pay me upfront??? Have you ever heard of Nigerian bank email scams??? Doesnt this sound familiar???

Please take a moment to check out the detailed responses left by myself & many others here in this forum who have/do work in the mining industry.

Without qualifications, you will find it extremely difficult to secure a position in mining.

Like with most employment sectors - if you havent got relevant qualifications to offer an employer or something else that makes you stand out from the thousands of other applicants, you arent likely to get offered a job.

Get some qualifications, do the courses, make a zillion job applications, be persistent, and keep positive & upbeat about your chances!

Sooner or later, someone will see your potential and offer you a role.

Good luck!

Gain "been there done that knowlegde" and save 100hrs of researching for jobs in the mines as everything you need is in one guide. Its really well worth it, especially to get the contacts for unskilled mining jobs. Also he is available to answer any questions. Well worth the $30 dollars.
