Oh i'm sure he is happy with it. How happy is wife and young kids are could be another matter. As the former child of a miner and having many friends being wives of miners I know how tough the lifestyle can be on the family. You make good money for your kids but is that worth it knowing you'll only see them every three weeks...assuming you actually get to fly home when you're supposed to? Sometimes I think the life a mine worker is best left to young single people or older divorcees.

You always get to fly home when your time comes its just that heaps of guys tell the wife or GF that they have to work when in fact they are in broome or darwin having a great time with the local chics

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
There are many reasons guys or girls are unable to leave the site. Weather can play a factor on some of the more 'dodgy' airstrips. I have also seem many times where due to short staff or mechanical emergencies it was 'all hands on deck' and people have had to postpone trips home until the work was finished. Working over-time is expected just like any other job...except in these cases overtime doesn't consist of an extra hour a day, rather an extra day or two a week. Not a very family friendly job and not good on the poor husbands/wives who want nothing more than to get home to their family.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
haha, I wasn't complaining i was advising you on the worst aspects of the industry you are "trying" to enter (but are failing miserably). I never claimed to know it all, just a darn sight more than you. And thanks for the advice. I have been learning something small everyday. Everyday I log on here and learn how small your brain really is.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
I'm intending to go for my dogging ticket and 20 or 60 tonne swivel crane tickets in the next course intake, before I part with that amount of cash I was hoping someone here could tell me if there is work available in the mines at Kalgoorlie and the surrounding area for someone holding these tickets. Any constructive suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
There are three companies with cranes in Kalgoorlie. Mines don't have their own as such.

Goldfields Crane Hire http://www.goldfieldscranes.com/

or Hercules http://www.herculescranehire.com.au/

or Penns http://www.hotfrog.com.au/Companies/Brendon-Penn-C rane-Hire

Goldfields Crane is the best one. I'm sure if you gave them a call they would be more than helpful. :)

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
No worries Poly. Ah that's no worry there. A lot of places prefer the ladies, we are gentler on their very expensive machinery :) Two weeks. I can almost guarantee you that you would find work within two weeks here. Can you get your hands on a Saturday Kalgoorlie Miner? Call the West Australian 94823111 and they will send you one.

Actually I think that's the wrong number now that I look at it. Got two halves of work numbers mixed up there. Bugger. Sorry.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Not to worry it's bound to be on their site somewhere or I'll check the directory :))

Yes it's fairly quick to walk in and get work there, my daughters been there since last November out at Cawse Smetler. She's getting heaps of work and learning a few differnt operations around the site, took her three days to land the job no experience...very proud of her:))

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hi shivers and tam, scroll back a few posts to my one in regards to my daughter - she had zilch experience and is doing well, she went through a labour hire company in Kalgoorlie and just gave her supervisor her mobile number after the first week so they could call her if needed. She started out as a sentry and just got put on as a crusher operator loves her job and says the company are great to work for....good luck guys and I may even run into you over there:))
