Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
hello all
when it comes to the marcsta i have found that most mines these days dont bother with it. it is a generic safety induction, mostly on fire extinguishers and tagging machinery ect. ALL mines will give you a site specific induction that covers these things anyway as well as their particular interpretations on rules of tagging ect. oh, by the way, i am an auto elec and have worked in a lot of sites over the last 10 years or so. good luck

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Cheaper to work the mines and fly back east at the end of every stint then it is to move you/your family to relocate to PERTH.
Too expensive.

I'm a forman offshore in the oil/gas industry, have been working in the industry for 14+ years.

I live in Melbourne and work offshore North West WA ona 3x3x3x6 roster. 3on 3off 3on 6off. Much better than mine site work and my employer pays to fly me from WA home to Melbourne.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Depends if you want to fly-in fly-out / drive-in drive-out or relocate???

Best bet is to determine which mine/s interest you (ie Size and location) see who has the camp contract and then call the camp manager and ask if they have a vacancy or know of any, not everyone will give you the brush-off...you may be surprised.

I'm a tradie so getting a job is extremely easy for me, wasn't always though... it wasn't that long ago that it was who you know not what you know... probably still is in a vast majority of sites so good luck!

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
your best bet to get a cleaning job in the mines would be to contact various recruitment companies and see if they outsource to mine sites.. I saw some jobs advertised on seek about a month ago to work in karratha and kalgoorlie cleaning the Accord hotel rooms... Have to relocate (their expense, I think) and pay ranges from $50,000 to $65,000..(pretty much what you'll get on a minesite doing similar work) think the recruiting company was frontline??

------------------------- ---------------

Ive worked in the resource industry for 14 years-currently as a foreman offshore. The biggest problem for resource companies is spending money on workers and them then leaving due to not handling the life style. Trust me everyone talks about the $100,000 wages, but not the reason for getting this money. The actual work condistions, work hours 12+ a day 7 days a week, hot very dangerous and alot of time away from family.

Ive lost count of the birthdays, close family deaths, christmas's, births, weddings ive missed over the years due to work. Companies are very unwilling in some circumstance to invest in workers when something like 705 don't last more than 1-2 years.

As Rani2271 has already posted previously,

Check out www.qfsaustralia.com
If you're looking for a job on mobile plant, they recruit people with experience or train up (at a cost to you) people without experience.

I'm Doing their April Course and seem to be the best way to get a foot in the door in mining, the course does come at a expense though (Close to $4000) but If your serious about getting work on a mine site, its a small investment..(also a tax deductable investment).

At QFS they train you and recruit you to work on a mine, source you a job and once they do they fly with you to the mine site and continue to train you onsite for a week, At no cost to the Mine employing you..

Therefore the mine site is more interested as they dont have to spend heaps of cash training you, because you are bringing your own trainer.. and QFS also guarantees that if you do leave the site before 12mnths they will replace you and train up another person for the mine site for free.. That way they are getting people into the industry as it's virtually no- risk and very little wasted resources for the site.

It's a bit of a process to get into the course but I suppose they cant make it too easy.. and they want to weed out the people that are really serious and who aren't about getting work in the industry..

I'll definately re-post when I have completed the course and let everyone looking for work know how I progressed and If it's worth it.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Double check that it's tax deductible..... get it in writing

not all courses are, especially when it's a change of type of employment...

Follow the link --> http://www.tafensw.edu.au/about/money.htm<---
Taxation

".....If you undertake a course to gain qualifications for use in carrying out a profession, business or trade in the course of employment, you may be entitled to claim a tax deduction. At the time you undertake your course there must be a direct connection between the nature of your course and current work activities. The course should either enable you to maintain or improve your skills or knowledge, or lead to increased income.

You will not be entitled to claim a tax deduction for your course fees where you undertake a course to gain new employment or to open up a new business or income earning activity within an occupation or field of employment in which you are not currently working. You cannot claim self-education expenses against income you receive from Youth Allowance, Austudy payments, ABSTUDY payments, Assistance for Isolated Children, Veteran's Children Education Scheme, or similar schemes....<----

just did a business double accounting major but hey - could be wrong!

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
It would appear that perhaps the skill set he posseses does not fit their needs.

As an electrician with two decaded of mining experience it's hard for me to speculate about where to go from here...

I remember a number of periods where even experienced skilled tradies were finding it hard to get work on the mines... all it takes is a real down turn in the economy (as we are about to experience, some may argue)

The long and the short of it - , the resources boom is set to continue for another 20 years ("ABC Newsb http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/08/06/1997 620.htm)

so don't give up..

Do you have existing family/friends in the industry?

well It seems to me you have a defeatist attitude, poor me wha wha wha they keep saying no what have i dont to deserve this.

Maybe his CV sucks?? Just need to say u are willing to learn and have a perfect safety record. But i am starting to think there are other reasons he cannot get the job.

And may I just add. You don't want this to happen. Fly in fly out sucks balls. good luck

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
i've doing fly in fly out for 14 years. I lived on site once and give me fly in fly out any day of the week tks.

I'd rather live where i want and have my employer fly me at their cost to and from work than living on site.
