Ha... Sounds like you're looking for people round your end lol! Ink Man is right, but my piece of advice is to go for jobs that are open pit, and if you can get into iron ore do that.. But just remember its all nice to go up north all starry eyed about the dollars, but you have to take all of these things into consideration first.. For starters its all 12 hour shifts, gets hot and dusty, the pay rates are the same as working in perth, only you do more hours in a shorter span of time. That explains the good wages. Just bearing in mind that the cost of living has gone up in perth something terrific, the average mortgage has gone through the roof, more people are doing fifo now because a lot more people are doing equal time rosters now (this mainly applies to people that do office jobs, or hold degrees because they wont go up north any more unless they get equal time now), the airports have gotten extremely busy and the carparks packed.
As well a lot of sites dont have bitumised airstrips, so the risk of getting rained in when there is a big storm is a good possibility. You dont fly on nice jets, you fly on bunky dash 8's and brasillias that get overworked... But if you're prepared to deal with all of those things, and spend most of your time away, then she's all yours! I worked away for a good while myself, and may have still been there now; yes it's a good lifestyle to lead, but you have to be prepared to take the good with the bad and make the most of it.. Failing that just remember the boom wont last forever, but while the going is good you may as well have a go if you're keen. Just dont get the false perception that life on the mines is all parties and good times.. Most minesites now, its not only zero tolerance for drugs, its zero tolerance for alcohol etc. You wont have time to party on i'm afraid. But if you're keen and prepared to work like ink man says, and willing to learn all the bad things will seem like nothing. Good luck!! |

Cheaper to work the mines and fly back east at the end of every stint then it is to move you/your family to relocate to PERTH.
Too expensive. |

Knew a guy who used to commute from Melbourne to a job out in the scrub of WA.
Sure, it can be done...but depends on the roster and wages I guess.
I wouldnt wanna be doing 2:1 and having to cough up for all those extra flights to/from home! |

Hi All,
I have read through all your posts on this site and yes it can be hard to get into mining and sometimes a job will just fall into your lap. But as a bit of advice, if you are so keen to get into mining...you cant be to picky about what job is offered. You just need to get that one job then your foot is in the door and you can move on from there.
I currently work in the industry and I know it can be very frustrating but dont give up trying. If you know someone in the industry...use them. Alot of people get jobs through people they know the sites. So dont give up...if you know someone ...use them.
I have been searching and searching for someone who has a trade (fitter/welder) background ideally with 5-10 years exp and who has some exp in Construction / Civil Estimating. So if you have this exp I would love to hear from you.
Cheers |

For one... Get your self over here you will then have a 3000% better chance of getting a job becuase it shows you are really keen and have some gumption.
2. U dont need tickets. contact directly to mining contracting companys not mining companys (Underground or surfacemining contractors) they will train u up.
3. Yes chicks can work on a minesite. Be warned you will get alot of attention (if your hot it maybe unwanted, If you are ugly then you will be loving it).
4. If you have family or partner in Perth than FIFO is really bad , try to get a job in the city.
5. Dont get drunk everynight. Go way for 2 weeks and save your money and then get the hell out of mining.
6. You will probably hate it. Its not glmaerous, its dusty, cr@p py rooms in cr@p py camps, doing cr@p py work, workiing with alot of a__holes (and some really nice people) If you are really lucky (like i was) you will get your first job on a great site with great people. Very rare.
7.The money you earn driving trucks won't be that good. You could get that in the city if you have some skills.
Unfortunitly in my profession Mining is pretty much the only place I can get work.
Peace |

It will be written into your contract of employment...read it!
Contract will specify pay conditions including overtime (if any). |

| you think age is an issue in mine sites? I am 45 and fit and healthy and would like to work with surveyors. Does anyone know off hand if mines or sub contractors needed offsiders much? |

Recruitment agencys would be your best bet there mate as most surveyors/assistants are staff positions (work for the company not contractors). I don't think age is an issue as long as you show a willingness/ability to learn new tasks and you can pass a medical exam. These generally involve testing your flexibility to see u have no limitations in vision (i.e. can turn your neck) and you aren't going to be a liabilty on site. also vision test. colour blindness test. drug test. hearing test.reflex test on ya knees that sort of thing. I was once ask to do as many push ups as I could and then followed by as many sit ups as I could manage and then hold 20kg weight above my head for as long as possible, That was stupid and I have never been ask to do anything like that again.
Surveyors offsider is a cruisy number, easy work and no responsibility.Undergroun d would be best. No flies. Besides Underground is better fullstop.
Hope this helps. |

| we have site trainer and assessors, so it is easy to gauge peoples competencies, too many try and bull *** about what they can do, they are discovered within minutes of being on a machine, and usually gone shortly after that/; the good thing with mining is that there is none of that unfair dismissal *** , if ya no good, ya gone, there and then. |
