. And one more thing, living and working in WA was advertised in NZ heavily through 2006-07, and the Industry promoters paint such a glossy picture of how easy it is to get work, especially couples, just get your licences, MARCSTA, provide referees and you're in, as long as you have 2 years experience!!
<><>
Advertised in NZ....Is that true? |

| yes, really, are you being funny, or is does that really seem odd to you, thats why there is such an influx, 'WA WANTS YOU" is pretty much what they are putting out there. WA is advertising currently on the net for poms, kiwis and who knows else. Fortescue was advertising for loco drivers, its not on their website now, but if you check out a pommy website, you'll find them advertising there, and thats just one example, I suppose they have their reasons not for offering up trainee positions, it seems. They want people to be experienced, but like i mentioned previously they can only steal from other companies for so long before they have to start training more people, its not everyone is born knowing screening processes or how to operate a loader or CAT 777. Back home they were holding expos in the major cities promoting WA, it even had a catchy slogan which escapes me at the mo.. There was newspaper coverage and even 60 minutes had a segment on how WA was going to need thousands more workers and that housewives and school teachers were getting into the mining boom. They did interviews with workers and BHP ( i think.) Its all made out to be easy if you can prove you are a reliable type of worker, they get you over here, and then the story reveals itself as something else. You need this, that and the other ticket etc, well ok fine, AND then thats still not enough, we should have just come over as boat people, in some ways we would have been better off. Sorry dont mean offence to refugees, but i am a tad bit bitter that all wasnt what it seemed. |

| which part sux? the fact that they advertise in NZ or wot. I think its sux that they (govt) says they may need to import more workers from overseas, (meaning china/asia) There are plenty of people here already to fill positions or be trained for them. Its an employers market out there thats for sure, it would be fairer if it was a bit more balanced, but such is life I guess |

| Why don't you just F$%k off back to where you came from and let us Australians have a job. I'm a coded pipe welder and because of all these f&*cking immigrants thinking the streets are paved with gold here, globalisation and employer greed, I can't get a job and the welfare system won't give my uni student wife and I a hand with the rent and stuff coz they want to see me eat away at all our saving first. So quit whining. |

Well excuse the f*#k out of me!!! if you had bothered reading more of my postings you would have read the bit referring to 'having bones' here in Australia. You're a bit over the top telling me to f off, my family is from here, and like your family unless you are indigenous, you are just another bloody import yourself. Get off your high horse. If you wanted a reaction and p1$$ me off, allow me to return the favour.... If things are so tough for you and uni girl, tell her to put her studies on hold, take your savings, fly both of you to Indonesia, jump on a boat, lose all your i.d. and head for Ashmore reef or Christmas Is. That way you will be guaranteed to get to the front of the welfare queue, get set up and things will be peachy.
NOW, Mr Brownstone, I am sorry you and yours are struggling, but I wish the world was a different place too.I grew up in a time when you were told, be good, work hard and good things will come to you (basically). And whaddya know, you work hard, get squat, passed over and watch dickheads get ahead. well get used to it, and remember, Australia asked for people to come to WA, and they are still holding open the floodgates, so you are just gonna have to take a cup of cement. Put that in your pipe and weld it |

I thought that too.
I mean I have been keeping my finger on the pulse of this whole mining gig for nearly 2 years, coz thats a big part of why we moved here, and its the tradies that are the ones who have the ticket for admission so to speak.
I just want the companies to stop being so tight and requesting exp. haulpack operators and OPEN UP SOME BLOODY TRAINEE POSITIONS!!! Thats all they and the recruiters are asking for, and seeing nobody new can get in , they are just stealing from each other, so what happens when the pool of exp. operators dries up, then they will have to take on whoever they can get, not just people like myself who are actually genuinely interested in the work, and not just the money. Or are they going to import chinese drivers, coz everything from china is cheaper?
I am not paying thousands for training, its not going to give me the 2 years they are asking for, hell, it won't even give me 6 months experience. In WA, I think $6000 gets you a 2 week plant operator course, which is great stimulus for the training provider.....CALLLING ALL COMPANIES!!! GET TOGETHER WITH YOUR PREFERRED RECRUITER (seeing as nobody does their own recruiting anymore, and job seekers basically have to pay for the privelege of working to their recruiters, who wouldn't even exist if company HR staff actually performed the full compliment of what HR is all about, recruiters and the cut they take really P1$$ me off) AND CREATE SOME NEW OPERATORS, COZ IN CASE YOU FORGOT, THE ONES YOU ALREADY HAVE AREN'T IMMORTAL AND ITS NOT LIKE WE CAN TAKE A PILL OF 'INSTANT EXPERIENCE' |

| I worked in Bouganville as a rigger, and they were paying the locals 12 cents an hour for driving the Euclid's, no wonder they rioted, when the mine payed for all the overheads with the extra minerals bar copper they were pulling out, business is business, but do you think they actually care about the worker, no, it's their cliche. |

persistance is the key loveitinperth..
I looked for over two years to get a job as a truckie and I have now been employed as a haul truck op for over a year now.. apply everywhere to mine sites in person and to all mine recruiting agencies. even take other labouring jobs on minesites if you have to just to get your foot in the door and some contacts.. also if you get knocked back, keep re-applying every 3 months to the same places to show your keen.. also I actually did pay $4000 for training through a training provider and it does actually count for something it shows to mines that you have thought hard about driving trucks for a career and you are serious about the work and are dedicated enough to try and get some training yourself rather than expecting the mine to foot the bill.. the big misconception is that these courses will guarentee you work.. they wont, you need to think of them as a tafe course, you pay for the training and the job hunting is up to you..just dont loose heart and dont give up keep on trying eventually someone will give you a go just like they did me.. |

Hey "jasonwaroo" you have gone a long way. If I remember you used to be a Foreman Offshore now your a Consultant at "Corporate" level.
You say that industry looks upon people poorly if motivated by money (load of crap).
I am a Project Engineer / Manager (Oil & Gas)and do not work for the glory, I work for the money and I usually drive the pay negotiations hard to maximize my outcome. By the way I think you are getting "Corporate" mixed up with Operations so stop big noting yourself. |

I made the move 2 years ago from working on Floaters to now consulting to the Likes of Stuart Petroleum(Oliver-2), CNOOC (3x wells in the Timor Sea), Beach Petroleums recent Spikey Beach well with the Songa, Origins 2 soon to occur 2 x well in Bass strait (Trefoil etc), and AWE's/Origins future NZ wells. They bring me in to forumulate the regulatory requirements for the various Rigs, Songa, Ocean Patriot & KT4, and their operations.
No i said the industry looks upon people trying to get into the industry who's only motivation seems to be $$$$$$$. |

So you work for Drilling companies.
I was on the Ocean Patriot earlier this year when it was stacked up near Bass Straight and in my previous job working on Drilling Projects for Bass Straight.
As for KT4 (Kan Tan) just left Geelong this week delayed 2 months (at 400K a day) after the bend the new Crane Boom...by going thru the limits. |

Right, just read the whole friggin message list.
It seems not much has changed since I first looked for mining work years ago. Hats off to all of you who have tried unsuccessfully to get work.
I have sympathy for anyone who got sucked into the scams.. It's sad to see peoples determination to get work abused by scammers...
Anyway, loveitinperth and kiwigal53 your posts stick out the most. from my own experience I can see where I went wrong and where what id do again if i wanted to get into the mines. heres some points (some of which have been repeated by others before me sorry)
* courses of any sort are effectively a waste of time and money. Hate to say it but its true. Your time and money is much better spend elsewhere. yes they show you are keen, comitted and serious, give you some baseline skills and exposure to the job tasks etc. The reality is that whatever mine you go to will want to train you "their" way, and may even want to untrain you in certain things you may have learnt. They will want to know you are up to their own particular standards and levels and have routine on site training, so it's not like you spending $4000 x 3 courses will save them much anyway, since it doesnt really cost much more for them to train 1 person or 5 at an induction and training session.
You are best to get a job with a mining contractor in their yards, even if its perth (or other city) based getting familiar with the equipment and terms that will be familiar out on site. This is effectivly paid training. For example you could work for a shotcreting contractor preparing the machines to go out on site, reloading the trucks with cement and parts for the next campaign, doing routine maintenance and generally getting to know the crews and staff that will get you out there.
The pay might not be that crash hot and the work pretty menial but its a good proving ground for what you will have to do out on site, and might get you noticed if you can show good work ethics etc |

(continued)..
What you'll find is that one day they will need someone in a hurry because they failed a drug test or quit or sick or injured.. or maybe there is just more work than they have staff for. Who are they going to take? the person who's got a cert to show they have a few hours in a dumpy and few other bits and peices that they may not even need, or someone who they know personally, who knows their own equipment, has proven they dont stuff it up, can maintain it, and has shown a keeness to learn.. Trust me.. the person who has dont the $4000 course wont even get a look in. That person will probably be too busy sending out cv's that get filed in waste paper baskets or writing on yahoo message boards. Ok.. so you get your chance to go on site.. you prove you self out here to be ok.. you do it a bit more often.. you make some contacts with people out there.. your co's shotcreting machine breaks down or isnt needed because something else has priority in the mining process, and the shift boss needs staff faster than they can be flown out.. You co happily lends the staff for a fee (happens all the time) and bingo, youre assisting the shot crew, or surveyors or even being considered for dumpy training if its going to be a long and possibly regular lot of downtime for the shotcreting side of things... You are now an experience dumpy driver, or shot crew assistant with site clearance and inducted and known.... YOURE IN....
Thats how it works. Forget your courses. work for anyone who works for the mines and in the meantime spend your yahoo typing efforts hassling mining cos to find out who's taking on people when etc..
It'll work trust me.. in boom times or bust. you just have to be the person who is there when you are needed. even in bust times there are 1000's of employees leaving each month.. They have to be replaced quick, and if you are there or known that you can be there youre in.
Another point is to not listen too much to what people say. do your own |

research and spend your time either on the phone asking whos hiring what, when , find out new projects, find out whos the contractors at each site, phone them, then phone the people they mention in conversation. all the time keep in touch with the mining co's too. Take your holidays out in kalgoorlie, visiting the mining offices and contractor offices along the way.
I cant remember what the immigrant was who was moaning about other immigrants coming to aussie and taking "his" job etc, but pull your head in mate, we all have to live somewhere, and you cant blame someone for trying to honestly give themselves a good life and better themselves. its not like they cant speak the language and want to drain australias tax money.. they have spend thousands on courses, and come over at your governments request to help your country prosper.
finally.. id just like to say i dont thing its worth it. It'll put your relationship and family under pressure, put you in some dump of a town alongside people that seem to know only work because thats all they do anyway, you'll end up working such long hours that they money you make will quite likely be spent trying to get over it during yoru time off. Your freinds will be your workmates mostly because any other freinds dont fit in with your weird hours and it'll seem partly like you cant escape from work ... If you ask me its a crap life. to top it off the money isnt that much better than if you spend a bit of time getting some training for some job in town that paid ok.. and you get to come home each night and enjoy life..
Ok.. end of rant..
if you go for it I hope you get what you want from it... Good luck. |

But I do have to be grateful for the permanent job I do have, the pay is double what I earned back in NZ and I get to come home and relax in my own little haven at the end of the day. |

Yep was involved in the Patriot for the Spikey Beach Well. Also the KT4 yep the damage to the crane boom from the driver ignoring the alarm and overiding the limits was one of many incidents that occurred; Patriot Techs cutting out the handrail on the port crane and a Maersk crane driver falling 3 metres to the deck, the stbd crane freefalling a load to the deck, dropped objects from the cranes like botls and nuts. The lack of ER oil spill onboard, no training matrix's, no prevention of overboard discharges. The KT4 was kept in Geelong due to me refusing to allow them to sail until certain safety issues had been fixed; the crews of the Far Fosna and Schimitar where happy fishing in Geelong i might add!! |
