never go for anything you have to pay for as a prospective employee.
All these courses that promise 'tickets' that will help you get a job are crap (unless it's a vehicle license). legit or bogus the big mining companies ignore 'em anyway because they do things thier way and you'll have to spend at least your first swing or two training anyway.
Hell I haven't renewed my MARCSTA for the last 8 years... |

no wuckers.
Have a look at the web sites for the big companies as well as employment agencies.
Also keep in mind that very few of them do thier own maintenance, construction or catering so have a look at the various contractors too.
Such as Boart, TME, and CAT for maintenance, Monodelphious, AKCMR or bateman for construction or P&O or Sodexho for catering. There are a LOT more than these, they're just the ones I could pull off the top of my head on a sunday morning. |

Hey Kiwigal, how'd you go after you sent your resume thru?
Did the job come up for you?
I've heard that RMS is very good training organisation, but don't know if their story about high percentages of students succeeding is completely true.
I also think many courses are a lot to spend precious ca$h on, without any type of guarantee at the other end for successful students. |

| for the money, coz it aint like we want the lifestyle, but if youre gonna spend a good part of your life workin, you want to make the most money you can, and everyone always makes out the money is great. But unless youre already in it, you cant get in without experience, i know coz we have been applying for 2 years. we are hard working practical type people, not rocket scientists and this is one of the few ways to make big money and have no time to spend it. |

Then you are trying to get into the industry for the wrong reasons! |

1. How many times did you mention money as being the reason to get into the industry?
2. Do you even know what you have to do in the industry, what it takes, what the industry actually is, the hours, the work etc, or is it simply about the money?
3. I have been in the industry now since 94, until last years working for others and since then running my own company consulting to the resource industry.I get brought in at a corporate level to provide advice to companies on various aspects of their operations, and i can say the industry looks upon poorly people applying to work in the industry whoes main reason for getting into it is $$$$; theres ALOT more to it than $$$$ actually!
4. Unfortunatley many of the posters on here whom stated my names "X" i want to work in the industry can you help me simply have no idea at all what it takes and what to have to go through to do it, they seem to be blinded with the $$$$$ and thats it. |

I mentioned money 4 times, and I suppose upon re-reading my message it sounded very flippant, and judging by your reply, it got your heckles up just a tad. Before my partner and I moved 5000kms from home we did consider our options, did a lot of research and based on the information available at the time, decided to make the move over here. Our reasons included, the warmer weather, the friendly people and the chance at a better lifestyle. We also discussed the mining lifestyle. Of course, dare I mention the word - Money was considered. How much would we need to set ourselves up over here, how long could we afford to not be without an income, and what sort of income did we expect to make.
But my posting did focus just on the money, and I am not really that shallow. We wanted to enter the Resources/Energy Industry because we wanted to be part of big world class projects, where people are motivated to succeed, to set and reach goals. Where you are part of a team that have focus, drive and a committment, and also where drugs and alcohol abuse is not tolerated, (unlike NZ, where drug testing is not yet common place) Working in remote locations under adverse conditions were not going to phase us. We know what we can cope with and did'nt take on this lifestyle change lightly. Also, we don't have to consider children, I'm sure it must be hard for people having to work away without their family. Yes money is important, I am sure as a "Consultant" your services dont come cheap, all I was meaning to say was that our committment to 'a job well done'and contributing to our employer achieving their goals in adverse conditions should see us earning a good living. And one more thing, living and working in WA was advertised in NZ heavily through 2006-07, and the Industry promoters paint such a glossy picture of how easy it is to get work, especially couples, just get your licences, MARCSTA, provide referees and you're in, as long as you have 2 years experience!! |

And while I am on a roll.....
Unless you already have industry experience or a tertiary qual. you are enticed by training providers and recruiters. Training providers will take your money give you a certificate but not a job. Recruiters may get you labouring work but a lot of them will take their cut out of every hour you work and then you still have to pay tax.
And they (Government/Companies) are complaining about a skill shortage. Hardly any companies are willing to offer Traineeships and there are only a few apprenticeships available over here in WA.
So a skill shortage is hardly surprising when Resource companies are continually stealing workers from other companies instead of investing in Training the next generation.
The people with experience that have been laid off in recent times of course would get preference, I don't have an issue with that, but if companies don't want to train people that are willing, able and above all, keen for the opportunity, it will get to the stage where the call will go out to import workers from further afield. And really, lets look at the big picture here, is WA not already having trouble looking after the population it already has. Basics like having enough water is a big problem. So rather than increasing the population, focus on the people that are already here first. Don't become like NZ, where companies have to take whoever they can just to keep the wheels turning - so to speak. And please, don't anybody tell me to go back etc, my family has bones here to. I'm not here to bludge, I want to work in Resources, but for now I will just carry on with my Ozzy Park factory job, and keep contributing to the WA economy until these companies shift the way they do things slightly and then maybe I'll get my chance. |
