Hi All,
My husband is a qualified welder/boilermaker with experience in TIG (Cert 7) MIG, ARC etc and is looking for a job in the mines. He has been contacting recruitment agencies and hasn't had much luck. Can anyone point us in the right direction? He is willing to FIFO or move here from the East Coast.
Thanks
Emma |

Yeh , i tend to agree with you, me and my partner have been trying for 12 months to get an 'in' and now with the recession, if yu arent qualified you probably have a snowballs chance in hell.
What we have been advised by people with industry knowledge is get whatever you can wherever you can and just wait it out. at the max, it will be about 18 mths before it picks up again, you just have to willing to wait out this cycle. There have been thousands laid off in WA, with more to be laid off. Take whatever you can, coz with xmas coming everything is going to wind down for a few weeks, even the recruiting companies have very little on their books. If you can find any work, just take it, coz workers are going to be returning to Perth, so there is more competition, even for the crappy temporary jobs.
I am optimistic for the future, think happy thoughts, and just wait for the pendulum to swing back the other way |

Hi man both my partner and I are coming over to Perth in March 2009 I read in your forum that you drive buses in Perth what's the wages like. We want to work in the mines first and foremost but we will need to work whilst we await for getting into the mines in WA We both hold bus licences. Ive been a bus driver for 12 years in Wellington NZ can you shed any light re wages etc |

| Hi Phillip, I was living in Perth and did consider driving buses there, Sadly you're current P class licence is not transferable in WA, (F - Class here) contact the DPI (Department of Planning and Infrastructure) in WA they handle all licencing enquiries. When I made my enquiries I was given a piece of paper, which I have now lost, but the requirements are - to fill out a form, get a medical from their appointed doctors, have a police check done, even thou I already have one and pay around $400AU for the privilage, apparently can take up to three months to process as well, in a nut shell everything but actually drive a bus! Cant tell you what the wages are, 90% of the gear appears to be modern, airconditioned not disimilar to the designline MANs you may currently be driving, the buses all have "can you see yourself driving this bus" stickers on them so they must still be hiring. Good luck. |

| hey phillip. it took 2 weeks to get my national police clearnance, what holds it up. Is you have to have 100% for their check of list requirements, everything has points. so i needed a passport with photo in, a bill like bank statement sent to an address in western australia with proof of living there, plus a photo id western aussie licence which took me a month to get. i had to get a full medical ,then go with all my paper work to the licencing place in joondalup, then i was required to sit a theory test for the truck part of my licence, which would be the same as the bus for you.then the medical is seen by someone else in the licencing co who decides if you are allowed to drive their trucks or buses. It took me a month to get my bank card after opening an account, i had to physcially go into the bank and get them to print one out for you with the address on it as a statement. you need to apply for a tax file as soon as you get here as that took me 5 weeks to get the number back. because you don't have medic cards or bills here as you haven't been here long enought it all takes time. so you can't get a job quickly until you have the paper work back for lots of it. hope it helps you but you do end up paying alot of dollars out for the things all over again. also after going to the licening place for your licence they send you a letter to say yes you can come in now and have your photo done for your licence then that can take up to three weeks or more to get the licence card back. so give yourself enough time. open bank account the first day you are out and about as they all take time to do and the bank card with the statement is what they require as form of address living here.ok |

| Hey there kelcato thanks very much for the info' man they sure don't hurry with the paper work do they I will endeavour to get any job just to sustain myself before entering the mines which I believe is a battle in itself. It proves it's not what you know but definitely WHO I just wonder if I sat my bus licence in say Sydney it may speed things up a little but I will make enquiries with Perth DPI Once again thanks for your info |

| Hey Guys, Funny you should say that, I applied for my HR (Heavy rigid, same as class 4 at home in NZ) in Sydney. I had to sit a general knowledge test, you can find it here - http://163.189.7.150/licensing/downloads/gettitest sdrivedrive_dl3.html, click on HR, from memory it contains around 290 questions, of which you have to answer 45 randomly selected, of that 45 it is broken into two sections, 15/30 you are allowed to get 3 wrong in the first section and 1 wrong in the second section. if you dont pass the first time it wont let you resit for two days! costs $140 to have it issued, check out the questions they are pretty bloody basic tho, every state seems to be different with their licencing rules, if you sit in NSW you will still need to swap it for a WA when you get to Perth, more paperwork....again they would not transfer my P class or my trailer licences, I do know if you dont have your HR sorted you cant sit a L (our P) |

| Hi again Phillip, Just reading the hassels Kiwigal had getting a bank account , etc, go to this website - http://movetoaustralia.net/ is full of useful info, how to apply foe Tax file nos., open bank accounts from NZ, I started there and it was really good. To answer other questions, yes the economy is hurting the mining sector here, I am currently in Port Hedland, (40degrees today)some big name companys have simply shut doors, and locked gates here, if you are skilled, boilermaker, electrician, fitter etc, no worries, not skilled, alot harder. |

hey phillip, your welcome. i am going to an information evening at a mining service place this thursaday night. They will be talking about offsider jobs and they have just starting a course for that so want to find out how much it cost etc. as that is a good entry level job to get into and seem to be always asking for offsiders with experience but if you complete the course which is 5 days, you should have enough experience to work on one, i would think.
I have heard that a few mining sites are letting people go, so the smaller ones would probably have to close down for the time being and maybe the others only have the staff they need to continue to mine. Its hard to say really, iron ore mines are not sending there stock to china until next year so will be stock piling. By the time you come over next year it may have settled down again. Its hard for people all over the world. |
