Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
WE, LIKE MANY OTHER HARD WORKING KIWIS CROSSED THE DITCH WANTING TO MAKE SOME BIG BUCKS IN MINING. MAINLY DUE TO THE BIG PROMOS - COME TO WA, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF JOBS IN MINING. VERY TRUE BUT WITH A BIG BUT.... SURE THERE ARE PLENTY OF MINING JOBS UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY START TO APPLY FOR THEM, THEY WANT A MIN OF 2 YEARS MINING OR CIVIL EXP OR DONT BOTHER APPLYING. WE GOT OUR WA SNR FIRST AID=$140, WA POLICE CLEARANCE=$45 (ONLY VALID FOR 3 MTHS) MARCSTA=$140,(THATS PER PERSON) PLUS I HAVE DONE $2000 OF HR UNRESTRICTED DRIVER TRAINING (SITTING TEST 2MORO, IF I FAIL IT WILL COST ANOTHER $300 APPROX TO RESIT). MY PARTNER IS X-ARMY WITH PLANT OPERATOR EXPERIENCE BUT NOWHERE NEAR THE SIZE OF GEAR THEY HAVE HERE, SO EVEN HE DOESNT GET A GO. WORKING FOR ESS DOING CLEANING OR COOKING ETC WILL NOT GET YOU INTO MINE WORK JUST THE CAMPSITE, AS WE ATTENDED A SEMINAR AND THIS WAS BLUNTLY POINTED OUT TO US "DON'T THINK BY WORKING IN THE VILLAGE THAT YOU CAN GET INTO DUMP TRUCK DRIVING SO DON'T EVEN TRY IT"
IF YOU ARENT A TRADEY THEN IT COMES DOWN TO WHO YOU KNOW OR TRY TO START AS A DRILLERS OFFSIDER(REALLY BLOODY HARD YAKKA APPARENTLY)THOSE ARE YOUR OPTIONS FROM OUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR. WE HAVE SPENT NEARLY ALL OUR FUNDS ON BECOMING ATTRACTIVE CANDIDATES OR SO WE THOUGHT. I AM CONSIDERING DOMESTIC CLEANING NOW AT LEAST IT PAYS $20HR, AS A RESTAURANT/BAR MANAGER BACK HOME I ONLY EARNT $14.50 SO THATS SOMETHING I SUPPOSE, BUT WE ARE JUST GOING TO KEEP PUTTING IN OUR CVS ANYWAY - WE MIGHT GET LUCKY - GOOD LUCK TO ALL, MAY YOU PROSPER

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
hi there i am a kiwi too just about to cross the ditch in a few weeks time for permanent living in aussie. They have just done another big recruit campaign at a job expo for SA australia mining jobs. I have learn't in the last 6 months of looking into mining jobs its who you know, not what you know or what certificates you have. I was silly enough to buy alot of ebay books from the roger bell mining which told you a lot of stuff, but certainly wouldn't help getting a job. They even sent me another email yesterday and said i am a great candiate for the mining industry and if i purchase another lot of books for $90 aussie dollars it would be a passport in mining jobs. so i told them where to put it, and that i have already purchased 5 books and that is all the fricken books i will be buying. anyway any other job in aussie still pays more than nz so i will be doing something else for a living and still stay here. good luck if you heart is set on long hours and long rosters.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
kilclineciaran if you look up mining jobs and then open a few up you will see what they want. It is basically HR licence for a least 12 months, senior first aid cerficate, police clearance from WA police, mining medical check clearnance which has to be done every time you start a new mining job. Then there is the random drug and alchol tests that you have to pass, that is nil drugs or alchol in your system.marcasta mining induction course, and then at least 1 to 2 years mining experience. The best part is its not what you know its who you know in the mining industry.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hi I am doing up my caravan and heading up north of WA next year and going to give it a go in the mines. Have been researching for a long time now and have heard so many different things! I am a Fitter/Welder- well did most of my apprentiship as a fitter and turner and have been working as a welder/fabricator for over 10 years. Have certificate in fabrication but no welding tickets. Currently been working in Melbourne as a production manager/tig/mig welder/fabricator. I have all round skills from welding heavy plate to welding light stainless sheet metal work. Not just working from drawings but designing and fabricating products from scratch. Also have fork licience. Any one who can give me a real answer on how much opertunity I will have if I just turn up in WA would be much apreishated!! I keen as just dont wont to pack everything up and drive 1000s of km to no oppertunity. I am a hard worker and are willing to try anything to get my foot in the door. Thanks all. Steve

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
stevowindahl the best advice is look up mining jobs western australia, then put in your welder/fitter job and see if it comes up with any and apply for them. The other thing would be find out the mines that need fitter welder and ring the mines themselves and tell them what you have got and years you have done it for. Experienced people get the jobs with the skills they need before anyone else does. That would be what i would do before moving up there with your caravan.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
nikkilester look under ess who service the mining industry i think they have bar people ,housekeepers etc all for the hospitality trade. i got lots of books from the minejobs web site and they sent me an email to say that i am just what the mining industry are looking for and if i purchased the $91 job package it would help me get a job. so i told them they could shove that where the sun don't shine as its not what you know its who you know in the mining industry that gets you the jobs. PLus i had the mining jobs in the mines book, the dump truck course book, the mining job stratergies, mining dictorionary etc which already cost me a few hundred dollars and they were still trying to get me to buy more. what a load of crapp. They are like hogan mining they charge $241 for the information and it still doesn't make it any easier getting a job. You want to contact the people who service the mines in the hospitality trade that is your best bet or the sat morning paper in aussie that advertises jobs in the mining sector. hope that helps you a bit.

Having worked in the NICKEL, IRON ORE, and GOLD mining Industries for the past two decades I must admit kiwigal is 100% right..

"its not what you know its who you know in the mining industry that gets you the jobs"

and when she " told them they could shove that where the sun don't shine " that would have to be the best advice I've heard...LOL

AMEN

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
danfrandav , thanks for that. lol. They sent me an email back with a message saying that with my A confidence i should have no trouble getting a job in the mines and that if i needed any help just send them a message. I arrive in perth this sunday, so hope that i can find someone to vouch for me in the mining industry as i feel i have a lot to offer the mining industry. Don't mind the hard labour of being a drilling offsider or something outside. Anywhere in western aussie will do me fine lol. or the whole of aussie actually lol.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
hi godess
I am not sure about age restrictions, maybe 18, dunno, see the reply from the girl at bottom of page 12 -- try sodexho website, they have office in Herdsman Park, Osborne Park if you want to get a face to face, they do cooking, cleaning etc, you can take your cv in or post it. iss only advertise positions through SEEK not their website. there was quite a few vacancies at the start of the year for this kind of work and hasnt been much since, i applied with sodexho and iss for cleaning and kitchen hand work which i have experience for and have never heard anything back from either of them, which is a loss for me but a bigger loss for them, i was willing to stick at it as long as the work was flowing. You gotta be in it to win it so just go for any opportunitites that present themselves, and get your cv to sodexho, it cant hurt, good luck chick

hi kylie
can you please tell us what compass is like to work for and the pay and conditions. Like for example, what is your take home pay after your swing, and is it like 2,3 or weeks on 1 week off. when we went to ess seminar, doing village cleaning etc worked out to about $100 a day for 12 hours and it was 2 weeks on. We are bloody hard workers and it just didnt seem to be worth it, any information would be awesome, thanks

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hi reedkara i was going to do offsidering but have read you dig drenches etc and that isn't me, i don't mind winching the drills into place and unlocking the core drills and taking the samples out and labelling them and putting into the trailer etc, but digging isn't me. anyway i applied on line to ess on wed and sent my cv in and i got an email back yesterday inviting me to an information day on the 30 of oct and to bring a copy of my cv, police clearance, licence etc with me so that was a suprize. would be interested to hear how much they pay too, i have heard they are good to work for and gets you into the industry even if its not something you would normally apply for. I have a list of pay rates from a mining site that seize $25 to $30 an hour but not sure if that is what a mining site would pay or the services to the mining site would pay. any one know please let us know. thanks

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Regarding mining ebooks, I noticed a few websites "offering mining jobs" and try and sell info and by the sounds of it works for them as its all over the forums. I dont like un honest people like that I am hearing. I actually brought an ebook 6 months ago too, off a lad who worked his guts off in the mines, that I can thank enough. Straight up no bull info well worth it, his site www.getajobinthemines.com
Hey kiwigal have you got your national police clearance yet? They can be tough to obtain as to obtain it you need to pass the 100 point test, e.g OZ drivers licence, medi care card etc, passport. so you need to get the oz licence first. Remember its only valid for 3 months too. To work for ESS you need national police clearance.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
I work with ESS in WA, previously in SA at Olympic Dam till they lost the contract......
I had no experience at all (was only 19 at the time), but because i moved to the town (had family there) they hired me due to the fact i was local.
Now i transferred to WA, ESS here actually holds the contract for minesite cleaning so i moved from rooms to minesite. Best way to get to know who everyone is, what position they hold, and how to get a job.......like heaps of people have said already its not what you know but who.

JMO but the lack of jobs with ESS at the moment is because of the contract they lost at Olympic Damn, 99% of people there chose to transfer over here (WA) and we got given first choice of jobs, so that was over 100 jobs we took in a fornight.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
hi smudgeandrew, no i don't have a national police clearance for aussie, i have had one done recently for nz as i haven't lived in aussie yet. But will be going for my aussie licence straight away and i am only going on an information day at ESS that they have invited me too first. Thats not to the end of oct so i will apply for aussie police clearance, but i have a full police clearance from nz. i will do the med care card check, where is that done please in perth, so i can look into that the first week i am there, i arrive this sunday.? I have my kiwi passport and birth certificate. I did tell them in my email i have a nz police clearance, as how would the aussie police know what you are like if you haven't lived in aussie before.
