Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
You can go onto sites like Rio Tinto and BMA and they will have a job section. Welders are probably wanted someplace.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Welders are one of the most required trades, I suggest you put your name in with companies like, United construction, Monodelpheous, Clough, Multiplex. etc. as most of the mining companies subcontract out their maintenance although some do employ direct.
If you are unskilled you can do the same but in addition put you name in with service companies such as ESS Catering etc.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Some company has a required 'training' scheme where they will get your tickets done as the job goes on.
I'm not sure about WA but in QLD you have to do a generic mining course and a medical and pass a drug and alcohol test.
Then they make you do another induction for the specific mine site.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Im from Port Hedland where it is all happening. If your based in Perth see Workpac or Skilled employment agencies. They're the best two agencies to deal with, most agencies say you need mining or construction experience. What a load of shi te!! I know for a fact pending on who you deal with you can fly out of any city in Australia, I've even heard people flying out of NZ. Company's that have alot of work up here is Monodelphous,Thyssen Krupp,Mconnell Dowell, John Holland, DTMT these a few to work with. If you came up here of your own back accomodation is very expensive. Real Estate agencies are blood suckers up here. The Drug & Alcohol policies are very strict on all sights. This is just Hedland I am talking about, Karratha is booming, Tom Price can't get enough workers. There is a spot somewhere up here if you want to work!!!

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
If you are a welder, you have to pass what they call a 6g welding test. Don't ask me what that means, all I know it is an over head butt weld. It gets sent away for testing before you can start welding on site. Get your tickets!!

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Alcoa hires a lot of unskilled labour. I know cause my hubby works there and they will train you up. There are 3 refineries close to where I live- Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup. But there is also up north. Hubby says they NEED welders up there right now so that would be my suggestion. Unless you really want to live near a city up north is the way to go.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Look in the West Australian or the Kalgoorlie Miner. Most mining jobs are done through agencies now but they advertise in the papers.

And for the NZ chap, you can't just walk onto a minesite and get work, it's not quite that simple. I wish these tv shows would be a little bit more realistic. You will need proof of your qualifications, and/or prior learning recognition stuff, a MARCSTA ($120), a current clear drug and alcohol test ($100+), a full medical, police clearance, contactable references and fill out mountains of paperwork.

It's a lot of mucking about and takes up to two weeks to get it all sorted. Oh and you have 12 hour shifts to look forward to. If you can snag an underground job they sometimes do four on, four off, some do two weeks on one week off, some are four days, four nights, four off.

This is a link to the West Australian jobs site:

http://olps.thewest.com.au/olps/employment/searchA dvanced.do;jsessionid=FFqW3hnng13sLFYZdqZh1Bfxn2vQ RnhxjgzkpxvJLpKyZ4x2qwVV!258404737!1170565846156

Good luck. Sometimes I think the kiwis outnumber the Aussies in the Goldfields.

I am from New Zealand and have been driving rigs for years but unless you have "experience" in the mines driving the dump trucks they dont want to know you. Have you got any suggestions on how to get the experience. I am really keen to get over and start work but I cant even get a leg in. You suggestions would be much appreciated.

This is obviously not the only avenue, but - try QFS...
http://www.qfsaustralia.com/pages/training
Contact them and ask about their "Work Ready" programme.

p.s. I have no connection with them, I just reckon they have a great idea and opportunities to get started.

Best way i found was to be living in the town and knocking on the door. worked EVERY time. even during the quiet times ten years ago

may not work if you are based in Perth but once you are in the game you will have countless jobs to choose from.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Yeah mate those days of walking in and getting a job straight away are over, with OS & H and just the dangerous nature of the job you need to get a heap of tickets to score good work, I think also it comes down to timing to when the companies take on trainees, keeping in mind that there are heaps of people with the same idea.
As the other guy mentioned you have to get MARCSTA (mining induction cert) National Police Clearance, Drug & Alcohol Test, Senior First Aid cert Mine Workers Health Surveillance Cert(MWHS) and also you have to be based in WA with an address and proof of it in order to change your NZ licences over to a WA one.
I have all I have just stated and still finding it difficult, just remain focussed and be persistent, get all they require and as someone just said on here, go door knocking in some of the boom towns and you may get lucky....cos once you're in, you got it made. Good Luck!

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
The ony guy who does MARCSTA in VIC is Carl Berglin and he is up on the Albury Wadonga border, give him a ring on 407 295 457 he will send out the info and workbook to swat up on and then he runs you through the exam face to face either up there or if he is in VIC he may come to you as he did with me, it's no drams and pretty straight forward. I think he is the only guy who does it and his fee is around the $200 mark, his organisation is Nationally accredited through Mining & Resource Contractors Safety Training Organisation.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hi
Would you please advise what this is for? Is it for truck driving, rigs, etc? Is it for recognition of prior learning? ie if you have done this job before and just need paperwork for it. My son wants to try something different (he has been a butcher for 15 years) and thought of working in the mines to earn some money. Does he need this paperwork? Jill

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
Hi, Yes every industry has strict OH & S (work place safety) requirements and to get into Mining you have to get MARCSTA (mining safety induction) certified as well as HR licence and National Police Clearance which are the minimum requirements and then once you get to the interview stage you will have to get (at the companies cost usually if not by yourself) a MWHS mine workers health surveillance medical test and then the mandatory on any site alcohol and drug test which will always be required throughout your work history. It is a lot of requirements but you have to be certified due to the danger factor not only to yourself but also to other workers.

Re:Mining Jobs Reply to this message
G'Day mate, im a mining supervisor, been doing it for 20+ years, tickets are not a big thing in west aust, as we are covered by the mines safety and inspection act, which recognises that a person must be deemed competent, so , site based competencies are the normal scenario otherwise you end up with people producing certificates that are really not relevant, however , put them with a trainer and assessor, give them a go, and you will know within 1 minute if the guy (or girl) is a competent operator.
usually,HR (heavy Rigid licence), is required, be over 18, medically fit, prepared to pass a drug and alcohol test, and for gold mines must submit for a police clearance, anyway good luck theres plenty of work if ya keen
