I'm getting the run around. I've been trying for weeks to find out how to get into a mining job at base level. Do I need a HR licence? I want to start as an tradespersons assistant. I have sent my resume to a few mining companies, but no response. Has anyone over there got in without tickets or experience. I live in Qld so I don't want to come over on a wild goose chase if there isn't much chance of getting a start.
Anyone with any good contacts?
Thanks |

The deal with mining positions in WA is basically the same wherever you go in Australia...it is a question of QUALIFICATIONS!!!
If you have relevant qualifications, you are likely to pick up a job very quickly.
ie a trade certificate (mechanic, electrician, boilermaker etc), relevant university degree professional qualifications (engineering, metallurgist etc), relevant TAFE or other professional association type qualifications (shotfirer's ticket, dogman's ticket for crane operations etc.)
It also helps if you have done an industry recognised induction course (eg MARCSTA).
Generic positions requiring little or no qualifications might include catering, cleaning, tending the wetmess bar etc.
Positions of this sort are generally advertised in local townsites on noticeboards or contracted externally via catering companies. ie THEY ARE NOT EASY TO COME BY!!!
Plant Operator and Haulpak driver roles are generally taken by those with long term industry experience in those roles.
For those wishing to obtain such roles - these people generally start in unqualified positions, hear of an internal vacancy on site with the relevant contractor company, have a relevant heavy vehicle licence etc, and go talk directly with the relevant onsite people.
You basically need to prove your worth and commitment first, and then hopefully sweet talk your way into a role should an opportunity arise.
So, without tickets or qualifications...best place to start is probably gonna be with one of the contract catering companies.
Good luck in your endeavours :) |

It also helps if you know someone in the industry who can provide a suitable reference...even if only as a character reference!
With generic unqualified positions on company noticeboards or via contract (catering company etc)...basically you need to be able to drop anything and everything for an IMMEDIATE start.
This is probably why you are not getting any response from companies you are enquiring with.
You have no industry relevant qualifications, probably no relevant references, and living in another state, would need to wind up affairs etc before relocating.
Companies simply will not pay your relocation expenses if you havent something you can offer them by way of qualifications/industry experience in return.
You would need to take a chance and hope for the best - relocate first, wait on a suitable role becoming available, and be able to support yourself in the meantime. |

Hey Bundy Ben. All of what Rygar said. An HR licence would be handy. You can't just reverse a truck around the corner to pass your truck licence test any more.
You will need to be drug and alcohol tested, pass a medical and obtain your MARCSTA, all at your own expense usually, BUT the fact that companies are short of staff, some are paying for all that again.
But really, if you're young and reasonably fit and healthy, have good references and a little bit of money behind you, I could almost guarantee that you'd have a job within the week, two at the most. Sample preparers don't need any experience and that is where a lot of the youngsters start out. Same for Drillers offsiders.
Kalgoorlie alone has loads of jobs, qualified and un. Most companies use agencies.
Check out Adecco, Skilled, TIS, Mining People, Strudwick HR, Minesite Personnel, the West Australian newspaper online. It would be easier if you were actually in situ. Take the punt, it will pay off.
Once you get a foot in the door you're laughing. |

Even if you are unsuccessful finding a mining position, retail and hospitality are screaming for staff, so it will be easy for you to find a job in the meantime while you get your tickets, MARCSTA etc.
However, if you have no contacts here, accommadation may be an issue. Need to organise that well in advance. If you can not find anywhere, try some of the Backpacker Hostels. I know a Scottish guy who came over here to work and instead of renting a home, he organised to stay long term at The Billabong Backpackers until he found somewhere. He did a couple of hours work in exchange for his room fees and was quite happy. |

| okay I know there's no one here at the moment, just got a question for the previous posters, how would a 40yr/old female go getting mine work, I've had experience in Nickle sample prep [Leinster] but that was a looooooong time ago also have OHS cert.IV. The course was the WA safetyline institute one, we had to research the relevant state regs and legislations. I know I'd have no problem with gaining work in the retail sector got supervisors certificate for that also. |

Providing you have no healthy concerns, a 40yr old female should have no problem obtaining work within the WA mining community.
Sample Prep is pretty much the same wherever you go (LM5, LM2 mills, jaw crushers, rotary dividers, filter presses etc etc).
Always helps to have a current MARCSTA induction as well as a valid drivers licence, references, knowledge of basic OHS regulations etc
Same as before...most companies will require you to submit to a pre-employment medical including a drug/alcohol screen.
Best opportunities for unskilled positions will be via lab sample prep or catering/cleaning type roles.
After that, it really does come down to a matter of previous experience or pre-requisite knowledge/skills base.
Good luck :) |

| You've been given some good advise here so far. Have you thought of applying to a temp agency? Alcoa uses lots of temp workers and many of them end up with full time permanent work from it. That's how my hubby got in and I know many others that have had the same luck. It's worth a try if all else fails. |

www.seek.com.au www.employment.byron.com. au Sending direct to employers usually does not work. They pretty much all use agencies these days and they use the internet.
Its a numbers game. 80% are igs and will not even reply, of the remaining 20 and 20% will crawl up your butt to send in your resume then only 20% of those that do will bother to reply.
Keep sending in the resumes.
If I recall correctly there is a mob in Brissie that does heavy vehicle, loaders, graders, tippers, training. If you have no quals thats a great place to start. |

If you go to http://www.bluecollar.com.au, you'll find there's a heap of jobs in mining.
There's always jobs in this area being posted on that website, and it's pretty easy to use. It only lists jobs in the Tech and trades areas, so you don't have to filter your searches to find what you want. It's all there.
Good Luck. |
